Thoughts On These Two Names?

Okay, they aren’t similar in style or sound, but I am curious about them. Any and all thoughts are welcome and I’ve put some info by the names as well as my main question.

[name_f]Arietta[/name_f] – “[name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_f]Aria[/name_f]”, a musical term but also an obscure name. The town of [name_f]Arietta[/name_f], NY was named after a first settler’s mother in the 1830s or so. Reminiscent of The Borrowers “[name_f]Arrietty[/name_f]”. According to the SSA, it peeked at #1000 in 1910 and hasn’t appeared since. My thought: Does it sound made up? Like the smooshing of one currently trendy prefix “[name_u]Ari[/name_u]/[name_u]Ara[/name_u]” with a currently trendy suffix “ett/etta”?

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] – I originally thought that this name was a newer hybrid invention, but it was actually at its all time highest (according to the SSA) in 1880. It has stayed in the top 1000 till 1955. The only more personal familiarity I have with this name is the fashion designer. What I wonder about this one is how it will age as a child does? Is it too cutesy?

Thanks!

I like both, but [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is nicer to me. [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] does seem made up, thought it is similar to Arietty. [name_f]Luella[/name_f] sounds really soft and sweet, [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] sounds more fairylike and frilly.

[name_f]Arietta[/name_f] is gorgeous! [name_f]Louella[/name_f] sounds a bit homespun to me.

[name_f]Arietta[/name_f] is pretty but there is just something about it that I don’t really like (just not my style I guess). I think that it’s the fact that yes (at least to me) it sounds a bit made up…not incredibly so though. It could still be used with no problems.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] I love. It’s beautiful, and can definitely age well! It also gives off a little bit of a southern belle type feel. I don’t think it’s any more ‘cutesy’ than any other -ella name.

[name_f]Lark[/name_f] – I swear any name beginning with “Ar” comes across as a little bit fairytale. It’s kinda interesting. [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] from The Borrowers is a name made up by the author which I think is why I wonder if people will think [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] is a made up name based on a made up name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s not! Haha. Sheesh. [name_f]May[/name_f] be overthinking it.

Rkrd – Homespun! That’s a great word when trying to describe names like this!

Ladyvanraven – Southern belle for sure! I think that’s part of its appeal to me.

I like them both, I think I prefer [name_f]Luella[/name_f] but it’s always looked a bit unfinished to me. [name_f]Louella[/name_f]? Hmm… I don’t know.

[name_f]Arietta[/name_f] is pretty, but does sound slightly fictional to me. I think it would take a very eccentric personality to pull it off.

I like [name_f]Luella[/name_f], and I don’t find it too cutesy at all. Perfect name for your child to grow up with.

Mymy-- I don’t think I mind that [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is a little cutesy, as it’d be adorable on a little girl, but then all children grow up so I’m glad you think it’d work regardless of age. Thanks for the input!

Oliviahsarah – I have thought about the eccentricity factor of names. I don’t want to set my child up with situations like “Oh, what an interesting name! You must be an artist/musician/aerialist” … even if she is.

I guess it’s really all a matter of perception and how a person carries themselves too.

I was also reminded of [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] from The Borrowers (and the film “[name_f]Secret[/name_f] Life of [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f]”). I really like [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] is very pretty and doesn’t sound made up to me.

I find [name_f]Luella[/name_f] a little old. It’s one of those names, like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Belinda[/name_f], that comes off as very 19th century cattle farmer’s daughter to me. And [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] I don’t think looks made up at all, it’s just very frilly and cutesy. I think [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] would be a very dainty, delicate Disney princess. If I can picture it on a real person, I imagine pre-[name_m]Harvard[/name_m] [name_f]Elle[/name_f] Woods.

I’m not fond of either.

Definitely [name_f]Arietta[/name_f]! I love The Borrowers, so [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] is a GP name for me (and a definite nickname for [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]!).
