Thoughts on this color name for a boy

I just came across the color name [name_f]Vermilion[/name_f] on NB but it was advertised as a female name. I instantly fell in love with it, except I fell in love with it as a possible boys name. It kind of has the same feeling of [name_u]Vernon[/name_u] to me but kind of more pizzazz to it. Like [name_u]Vernon[/name_u] and [name_u]William[/name_u] combined.
What are your thoughts?
I can just think of it as a cool color sibset: [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (g) and [name_f]Vermillion[/name_f] (b)
What are thoughts on it as a boy color name and boy name in general?

I think [name_f]Vermilion[/name_f] works really well as a name and a name for a boy, and that names in general should be open for use by everyone - word names especially so. Perhaps this is more intuitive to those of us without gendered nouns in our first language. I think NB has to go with dominant use when assigning a category? [name_f]Vermilion[/name_f] sounds more similar to popular names given to boys, rather than girls, to me too. Ditto with [name_f]Persimmon[/name_f].

Oih [name_f]Vermillion[/name_f] is so cool and I can totally see it on a boy - alongside the names youā€™ve pointed out, it also reminds me of [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m]

I can totally see it working! Itā€™s not my style personally, but I actually like it better on a boy than on a girl (though I see it as fairly gender neutral). It does feel like a much ā€œcoolerā€ version of [name_u]Vernon[/name_u], and I like that about it too!

when i first found this name i also thought it was a boys name! i actually donā€™t see it on a girl but idk, maybe thatā€™s just me

also, maybe youā€™ll be interested in [name_u]Viridian[/name_u]? also a color name, itā€™s unisex and more used on girls (i think) but i also really like it for a boy

Iā€™ve never heard of it in the context of a name! I actually would prefer it on a boy but it seems perfectly neutral to me! Reminds me of [name_u]Meridian[/name_u] a bit. Iā€™m not actually a van of the color, but the word sounds lovely. Iā€™d use it!

I think it could work. It sounds kinda heroic so I think it could cross over to unisex

Ooh, I would like this on a boy! It looks like a mix of [name_u]Vernon[/name_u] and [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m] so it looks more like a male name to me :slightly_smiling_face:

I just looked up this word and the vermilion flycather bird is so pretty!

I would be a bit apprehensive using it. Not only would it be awful trying to teach a child how to spell and pronounce but it reminds me to much of ā€œVerminā€. I would rather use names like [name_u]Cyan[/name_u], [name_u]Kobe[/name_u], [name_u]Forest[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_u]Basil[/name_u], or Tyrian.

I also immediately thought of vermin.

I donā€™t see what makes it a girlā€™s name, honestly. Thereā€™s nothing exclusively feminine about the colour red and it isnā€™t a name thatā€™s in common use for girls, like [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]. If people have any kind of reaction to it, Iā€™d probably expect it to be because sometimes people donā€™t like hearing ā€˜unusualā€™ names theyā€™re not familiar with and not because they think itā€™s a girlā€™s name. That being the only problem, I wouldnā€™t worry about it, because you could pick something pretty ā€˜safeā€™ and still get an ā€˜oh thatā€™s oddā€™ reaction from people.

If [name_f]Vermillion[/name_f] is the name that feels right to you, Iā€™d go for it

It also reminds me of vermin unfortunately. Seconding the suggestion of [name_u]Viridian[/name_u], which I think is gorgeous.
