Thoughts on Trip?

I saw the name [name_m]Trip[/name_m] somewhere the other day and was intrigued. I’m not sure what I really think about it and just wanted some of your guys’ thoughts.
Any opinions good or bad would be great!

For me it is very connected to the whole [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_u]Palin[/name_u] saga (different spelling I think, but still) so that is the first thing that comes to mind (but that connection is passing of course for most of society). More importantly, I don’t love ‘word’ names in general and [name_m]Trip[/name_m] has too many different meanings in the English language for it to be a name I like very much. I tend to prefer names that are purely names, but that is just a personal preference.

[name_f]My[/name_f] understanding is that traditionally, [name_m]Trip[/name_m] was used as a nickname for a boy who was a “the third” to distinguish him from Senior and [name_m]Junior[/name_m] who had the same name as he did - [name_m]Trip[/name_m] being short for “triple”. It does seem to pop up as a stand-alone name, which apart from its preppy overtones I don’t really understand, as the verb “to trip” doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. And I do also think of the [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_u]Palin[/name_u] saga - if memory serves I think [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] named her son [name_m]Tripp[/name_m] as a stand-alone name.

That’s super interesting about the ‘triple’ tradition! I think of [name_m]Tripp[/name_m] from the movie Failure To Launch and I’m sure his name was chosen strategically. I agree to use a verb that is less than confident might not be the best. However, it’s cute as a nn!

Sounds like a country club kid (the third of his lineage w/the same name). I’d imagine him to be arrogant and useless.

I like this name. It’s not my favorite, but it’s okay. I don’t love it because of the drug associations.

Makes me think of [name_m]Trip[/name_m] Fontaine from The Virgin Suicides, not sure if it’s a pleasing association, lol. I also think of drugs. Generally it sounds very cool and somewhat edgy, if that’s what you’re going for, I think I rather like it, either as an actual name or a nickname.

Yes I too understand it was more common when someone was named eg [name_m]Henry[/name_m] III. Eg you would have the grandfather [name_m]Henry[/name_m], the son nicknamed [name_m]Junior[/name_m], the grandson nicknamed [name_m]Tripp[/name_m] or [name_m]Trey[/name_m]. Saying that I quite love both [name_m]Tripp[/name_m] and [name_m]Trey[/name_m] regardless as they feel casual and relaxed to me, without any offensive derivatives/nicknames etc I can think of. And I think the original origins are quite lost and unknown these days anyway.

The only way I like the name [name_m]Trip[/name_m] if it’s a nn for a III.
Kind of like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Williamson[/name_m] III nn [name_m]Trip[/name_m]. In which case I like [name_m]Trip[/name_m] much more than the other traditional nn’s.

As a stand alone name I don’t get it… tripping in itself is not necessarily a great thing and why would you want to name your child after something you’d probably rather avoid in real life?
