Thoughts on Winifred?

There weren’t a whole lot of comments on this name on its page so I thought I’d ask your opinions here. We think it’s darling and would even consider using the nn [name_m]Fred[/name_m] instead of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], depending on her personality. My only hang-up is that my cousin who lives halfway across the country and I’m not close to at all has a 5ish year-old named [name_f]Anwyn[/name_f] that they sometimes call [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]…do you think that’s a problem? Thanks for your input!

No, it’s a nickname. I’ve always thought [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] were adorable, but not [name_m]Fred[/name_m]! That’s just tacky. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because she could be a tomboy doesn’t mean she has to have a boy name. I don’t see the point of naming your child one thing but calling them something else. SHE may choose [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but don’t force it on her. However, if you must use a nickname, [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is fine, but don’t call her a not even unisex name when she’s a girl

I’ve always loved [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]! It’s on my list too! I prefer the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but if you think [name_m]Fred[/name_m]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u] will fit her better, I say go for it!

I love the name [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]! I don’t think the cousin thing is a problem. I love the nickname options [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], but not so much [name_m]Fred[/name_m] (I don’t really like it on either gender)

I love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] also!

I can imagine [name_f]Winfred[/name_f] in a sibset along with

[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]

[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is lovely.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] much but every name has nickname potential issues.

I wouldn’t worry about a [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] even in the same town!

[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] are adorable nicknames for a girl. The cousin connection wouldn’t be an issue for me, especially when you see them so infrequently.

I love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]! But that may be just because of [name_u]Angel[/name_u]… either way, [name_m]Fred[/name_m] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] make great NN’s. Definitely not to close to the cousin to render it unusable.

Good luck!

Very unexpected! I like it. Not a fan of [name_m]Fred[/name_m] on a girl. I like the full [name_f]Winifred[/name_f].

I maybe the only person on here whose not a fan of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]! Regardless, I wouldn’t go with [name_m]Fred[/name_m] unless she wanted too.

I think we all worry about nicknames so much (me included) we don’t allow things to just happen naturally (my nick names include peanut , kinara, Nae Nae, and [name_f]Kiki[/name_f]) I guarantee my parents didn’t think of those! Some of the cutest nicknames happen by accident I know a Mattithiah whose nn is [name_m]Bobo[/name_m].
My whole point with all of this? Use the name you like and a nn will find its way. :)!

I absolutely adore the name Winifred. It has been one of my favorite names for years and years and years. It was in the number one spot for my FI and I for about a year and a half or so. We love that it is fairly uncommon and nearly unheard of, but is still a classic name people recognize. We even liked the name Winnie as just a first name (long before Jimmy Fallon used it).

It was always met with strong opposition from friends and family members who did NOT like it. I would get really candid reactions from friends who said the name was “ugly” or “weird.” Which was always so funny to my FI and I, because we thought the name was so charming and Winnie was just divine in our opinion.

I’ve come back around to Winnie as of late and would consider Winifred as the full name (I usually don’t like calling a child one thing, but only planning on calling them a nickname, like Winifred nn Winnie), but I would make an exception here. I think it goes with some of the names FI and I have on our long list (Olive, Beatrice, Violet, Hattie), but no so much with others (Daphne, Cecelia).

I truly hate the nickname Fred. I think nicknames should come organically, meaning only once she’s here and you interact with her and get to know her should you decide if she’s more of a Fred or a Winnie. Honestly, Winnie is so absolutely adorable that I would never even consider using Fred. As for the cousin, only you can answer this: Do you see this cousin? Is this cousin’s child a big part of your family? Is the nickname Winnie so heavily associated with her? If no, don’t worry. I have cousins who’s children I will never see and if we happened to land on the same name, so be it.
