Pronunciation: ZOO-KO
Meaning: [name_f]Victory[/name_f], [name_f]Glory[/name_f] OR Failure, Loved One (Chinese)
This name has always been a gp of mine ever since I watched Avatar: The Last Airbender. Although I would never use it in real life, I would certainly love to see it on another person.
I love Avatar: The Last Airbender and I think Zuko is a fun name, but for me the association is very strong. I hear the name and I imagine the fire lord’s son and his facial scar. The name itself has a friendly, unique vibe though. I’m torn because I like the name but the character is kind of an odd connection for me. I would assume any child I met with that name had parents who were fans of the show.
I know someone whose child’s name is [name_f]Tenzin[/name_f] by the way. I haven’t yet been able to shake the [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of Korra association from my mind, but I will admit that I think it’s a cool name. If someone can name a (white) child [name_f]Tenzin[/name_f], why not Zuko? [name_m]Just[/name_m] be prepared for people to mention the character a lot. (As a personal note, I hope to name a future child [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], and I’m completely fine with the Shrek association. So even if there’s a strong popular culture connection with a name, as long as you embrace it you should be fine.)
Also a really big Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, the character is the first thing that comes to mind but it’s an attractive name. I could see it as a creative nickname for [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]/[name_m]Zachariah[/name_m] or [name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f] I suppose! It reminds me of [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], [name_m]Duke[/name_m], [name_u]Nico[/name_u], [name_m]Rocco[/name_m], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], [name_f]Zuelia[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Coco[/name_f], [name_u]Mikko[/name_u] and [name_m]Haco[/name_m]
I actually really like it. It’s different and it’s a strong name. As soon as I saw the name I instantly thought of [name_u]Danny[/name_u] Zuko from the film musical Grease. But that’s not a bad association and to be honest kids today probably have no idea what’s Grease is. But overall I really like it.
I’ve never heard of the name before. I really like it. I’m not aware of the Avatar connection.
I would def double check the name’s meaning and any possible other cultural connotations with a person who speaks Chinese before using this name, though.
