[name]Hi[/name] Berries,
I am due in five short weeks. We have been (mostly) decided on the name [name]Tessa[/name] for many months now. I’m not in the habit of sharing this information often, but my toddler told the hair dresser today and the hair dresser didn’t know quite whether to believe this information from a 3 year old. I explained that yes, that is what we plan to name her, and there wasn’t much said after that!
Anyhow, I’ve had alot of namers regret with my first child and I really want to avoid that again. [name]Tessa[/name] seems to be well liked here on Nameberry, but I wonder what the general consensus is in the ‘real world’. Does anybody have any personal experience with the name? I really want to choose a name that is well liked by others and that receives compliments. I’m pretty sensitive to that now.
I love the name [name]Tessa[/name]! I think it’s short and sweet with just the right amount of spunk. I love that it’s girly but not frilly. I know one [name]Tessa[/name] and I’ve never heard anyone comment on her name, at all. I don’t know if that’s good, bad, or neither. The name [name]Tessa[/name] makes me think of a lovely, happy, energetic little girl. I think you should stick with it!
My little sister’s friend is called [name]Tessa[/name] (she must be about ten I think) and I think it’s beautiful. It fits her perfectly and I always associate it with a bright, happy little girl. I have heard [name]Tessa[/name] complimented several times on her name and it definitely stands out amongst the other kids.
I have a cousin who just named his daughter [name]Tessa[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and everyone in the family just thinks it’s beautiful, I also know a [name]Tessa[/name] who is about to go into college and she has always been complimented on her name, I have another cousin who is named just [name]Tess[/name] and that fits her perfectly but I love the sound of the two syllable [name]Tessa[/name]. It’s a beautiful name congratulations on your newest edition!
I don’t know how familiar [name]Tessa[/name] is to non-Berries…I’ve never met a [name]Tessa[/name] [name]IRL[/name], so maybe that’s what your hairdresser’s reaction was about (?).
I think [name]Tessa[/name] is a very pretty name, but I personally prefer [name]Tess[/name]. I knew a toddler girl [name]Tess[/name] when my son was young, and it struck me as a feminine but strong sounding name for a girl.
If you love it, keep it!! If you’re having second thoughts, now is definitely the time to make sure you’ll be happy with the name once your little one is here! Good luck!
I love [name]Tessa[/name], and considered using it myself! I also adore [name]Tess[/name]. It definitely is a name that is well liked by “non name nerds” in the real world, LOL. My sister has never been on a name board, and relies on the opinions of friends (they have a huge circle of friends!) So, she went to them for opinions on their short list. Their final names were [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Sienna[/name], [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Tessa[/name]/[name]Tess[/name]. She told me the favorite by FAR was [name]Tessa[/name]/[name]Tess[/name] (that was my favorite, too!)…she was surprised how overwhelming it was. She got tons of great feedback and raves about it, so everyone (their circle of friends) was quite bummed when they ultimately named their daughter [name]Scarlett[/name]
So yes, I would use [name]Tessa[/name] in a heartbeat, with no reservations at all!
I know a [name]Therese[/name] nicknamed [name]Tessa[/name]. It suits her, it’s energetic, and elegant without being frilly. I’ve never heard of it being used as a full name, more often as a nickname for [name]Teresa[/name]/[name]Theresa[/name]/[name]Therese[/name], but I think it can stand alone as a full name.
As fellow pregnant woman I can tell you, it may be the hormones leading you to misinterpt the hairdressers response. I can think of 5 reasons off the top of my head why she was silent that have nothing to do with her not liking the name. (I won’t bore you with them, just trust me).
[name]Tessa[/name] is great name. There is a toddler in my mommy and me group named [name]Tessa[/name].
I love [name]Tessa[/name]! I just found out today that my baby is a boy but if it was a girl we were going to name her [name]Teresa[/name] nn [name]Tess[/name]. The only reason it wasn’t going to be [name]Tessa[/name] as a nn is that it sounded sing-songy with my last name. I think you’ll be happy with your choice. I hope we have another girl some day so I can have my [name]Tess[/name].
My dd is [name]Tess[/name]. we kept the name a secret from family and friends and got nothing but positive feedback. My mom was thrilled because she used to babysit a girl named [name]Tessa[/name] years ago and always thought her name was beautiful. She was the ballerina princess type little girl. [name]Glad[/name] we chose [name]Tess[/name] because my [name]Tess[/name] does not fit the ballerina princess personality lol
[name]Tess[/name] stands out in the crowd and is memorable. Only one person asked me where I got the name because she had never heard of it before.
all in all you picked a great name that will proudly serve your daughter well!
I love [name]Tessa[/name]! My sister named her 3 year old daughter [name]Tessa[/name] and has gotten nothing but positive feedback. I was so thrilled when they announced the name because I’ve always loved it. You’ve made an excellent choice! Good luck!
Thank you everybody! It’s so good to hear your positive feedback, and it seems that the name is a favourite in the real world. As mentioned, I’m pretty sensitive now to outside comments which come mostly in the form of silence. We named our 3 year old daughter [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Eliana[/name]. I chose it many years ago when I was less analytical with names and before it rose in popularity on the boy chart. I thought it was both pretty and spunky on a girl. Some love it and others don’t see it the same way. It’s that disconnect between how you see a name in your own head, with how it is perceived by the rest of the population that I’m probably fretting about now. Although it ‘shouldn’t’ matter I know, it does make a difference to me. It’s hard to shake it off and it ends up influencing my own perception of the name.
Anyhow, it’s good to hear everybody’s interpretation of the name [name]Tessa[/name] - spunky, pretty, energetic, feminine but not frilly, and of course memorable. That is just what I was going for. I’m not willing to go with a boy name this time, or even a unisex name (which I know some might advise). Instead, I want a distinctly feminine name this time, that can sit alongside my spunky little [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Eliana[/name].
Oh, I see where the silence is coming from now clearly.
First of all I love the [name]Jasper[/name] on a spunky girl. It sounds like whisper but spunky! I think it is great.
But like you said, it is a “traditionally” masculine name and unusual. So when people first hear “[name]Tessa[/name]” they are thinking, hey that’s a tradinal girly name and very different than [name]Jasper[/name]. That’s probably the first thing that is popping into their head and they are about to say it, then think…oh I don’t want it do come off as disparingly to your first daughter’s name, who is probably standing right there. So they go silent while they think. Then the moment has passed and so it’s silent.
My 18 month old is [name]Tessa[/name] (often called [name]Tess[/name]) and we were not 100% sure when we named her but we love the name completely now. Easy to spell and say but not hugely popular, people always comment on her name in a positve way and most peple seem to see it as a happy, outgoing spunky name - suits our [name]Tessa[/name] perfectly
Yes, I like [name]Tessa[/name], but I like [name]Tess[/name] better. [name]Tessa[/name] is girlier and sweeter, but I feel [name]Tess[/name] is more adventurous and fun. Also, I would recommend using it as a nn for [name]Theresa[/name]/[name]Teresa[/name].
