My sister in law is due on Halloween and they want to name her baby girl [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f]. I don’t want to flat-out tell her that I hate it and it’s obviously not my baby but she did ask me if I had any suggestions. I don’t wanna give her any of the names we’re considering incase baby is a girl and [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] isn’t really my style anyway. I decided to turn to you guys for some help! Any suggestions for someone who likes names like [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f]? Before this, they wanted to name the baby [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_u]Lexie[/name_u]. She asked for my opinion so I wanna give it to her, but I don’t know what to suggest to her that she would actually like! [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] reminds me of tinsel… I hope I can scour the pages for some names to run by her. Thank you!
[name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] reminds me of the socialite, [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m]. Other than that it feels flimsy and insubstantial to me. Maybe [name_f]Tansy[/name_f] or [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] could be alternatives? If they were considering [name_f]Callie[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], perhaps you could suggest [name_f]Calixta[/name_f]? Either [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_u]Lexie[/name_u] could work as a nickname for that.
Or maybe [name_u]Tallie[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Talia[/name_f] or [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]?
I’ve seen it used repeatedly for baby girls, but I’m really, really not a fan of the -sley ending. It always reminds me of Pugsley from The Addams Family.
Here are some more ideas.
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Jessamy[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Sidonie[/name_f]
[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]
[name_u]Teagan[/name_u]
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Bree[/name_f]
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]
[name_u]Paisley[/name_u]
[name_u]Haven[/name_u]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
Laurel
Delaney
Briony
What about [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] or [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]? The sounds are really similar.
Another name I thought of was or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. She seems to like the -ee ending names.
I’m not sure [name_f]Calixta[/name_f] would work for someone into trendy names…
[name_f]IMO[/name_f], [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is the best from those that you mentioned. Maybe suggest [name_f]Calla[/name_f]?
I’d probably suggest some of these:
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexa[/name_f]/[name_f]Alexia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]
I also think that [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] is too tinsel-y for my taste. What about:
[name_f]Kinsley[/name_f]
[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]
Brynlie
[name_f]Braelyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucie[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]
[name_f]Tinsley[/name_f] is horrible.
What about [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]?
It sounds like Tinsel.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about just [name_f]Tinley[/name_f]? Still not my style, but a lot better imo.
I think it is important to tell them you think it sounds like Tinsel, because they may not see that side of the name.
Honestly, I wouldn’t say a word at this point unless she asks you again. She’s due in two weeks. If you must bring up, tread lightly, it’s normal to second guess your names before giving birth (I know I did and there a ton of posts on here with other mom’s going through this). the best way you can help is to be supportive.
Seriously, not your baby, not your business! Let her use the name she loves, and you do the same in the future. Who cares if you hate your niece’s name now? You will love your niece anyway. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you feel if the situation was reversed and she came to you with a bunch of suggestions you didn’t ask for, right at the last minute?
She seems to like cutesy names that work better as nns for a little girl. I would say, “Oh those names are so cute for a little girl. But what about when she is an adult and gets her phd in chemistry or runs for senator?” I would suggest she find a longer, more substantive name that will give her a cute nn she likes. And with that suggestion, you aren’t insulting her taste, but adding a new element to consider.
OMG. The OP flat out said the person came to her for advice. Chill out. Regardless of whether or not it is her baby, it’s still family and it is possible to suggest names in a nice way. “[name_m]Hi[/name_m] xxx, I know you asked me about [name] and I know you haven’t picked out a name yet. Here are some I think you would like…” shouldn’t piss off a mother-to-be. Personally, I would appreciate the fact that someone close to me cared enough to help me name my baby.
I don’t want to flat-out tell her that I hate it and it’s obviously not my baby but she did ask me if I had any suggestions.
