To honor someone I love … honest thoughts please!

I have fallen hard for the name [name_f]Luella[/name_f] and I’m finding that I really want to honor a particular person who is of great importance to us. He passed this last fall. He was a great big-hearted scottish fisherman in [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] so I’ve zeroed in on Scottish-related names, water-related names and his initials as ways to explore mn possibilities.

So let me know which of these combinations you like best or least. Further suggestions greatly appreciated as well!

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] – feminization of, and Italian for, his middle name, [name_f]Venice[/name_f] (he always included his full middle name. Think he enjoyed the romance of it). veh-NETZ-ee-uh. His given name does not fem up very well.

Others by way of initials:

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Valo[/name_u] – VAHL-oh, Finnish word for “light”.
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_m]Vine[/name_m] – also, the vine has wonderful celtic symbology.

Scottish (some of these are a leap, as many scottish gaelic names don’t sound quite right [name_f]IMO[/name_f], would love some other name suggestions here particularly!!):

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Fionn[/name_u] – “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]”
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] Acair – Scottish Gaelic for “[name_m]Anchor[/name_m]”, difficult to say properly: [name_m]AH[/name_m]’-gehr with a soft ‘r’. Like better in theory and clashes with last name a little.
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] – Scottish place name, [name_f]Isle[/name_f] of [name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] – significant in celtic culture, bird of prophecy according to the druids

Water names:

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Ren[/name_u] – Japanese “water lily”, feel like “wren” provides dual purpose here.
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Bay[/name_u]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f] – Latin, “of the sea” (fem gen for of this is mara in scottish gaelic)
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] – nickname [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] also means pearl

“[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]” Names:

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] – due date is in [name_f]May[/name_f] too.

And in my search for water names I came across Aysu which is Turkish for “moon water” and is a female name. I thought it so lovely I had to share.

Thank you so much!

Aysu is neat!
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] isn’t my style, although [name_f]Venice[/name_f] is, and I can’t help but love the name [name_f]Venice[/name_f] [name_f]Luella[/name_f] but you wouldn’t get [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] from it. :frowning:
With [name_f]Luella[/name_f] having such strong l and a sounds, i personally would stay away from valo ( although I really like valo)
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] pearl gives me southern feelings as does [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Luella[/name_f] violet though, it’s very pretty.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] is probably my favorite- a lovely name and a good connection to your loved one.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] are my favorite. Some of the other options don’t flow very well.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] is perfection and I really like it with [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] or [name_u]Fionn[/name_u]!

[name_u]Sully[/name_u] – I’m not worried about getting [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] from it. I’m not a nickname person (but it does exist). [name_f]Venice[/name_f] [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is cute, though [name_f]Venice[/name_f] is not my style for a fn. Thanks! I think the ones you pointed out have the best flow and accessibility for sure.

Characternamer — [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] is a contender for the mn spot of any name we choose. I do wonder if it sounds a little dramatic with [name_f]Luella[/name_f] though? It does speak directly to him though and I would rather be direct that obscure in reference.

Chachel – This particular idea has been a task! There are tons of others that I came up with that are so good in theory but absolutely no flow between them. I do wish [name_f]Mae[/name_f] wasn’t such a filler.

Roulan – Thanks!

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] is my favorite!

One vote for [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] meaning and background

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Bay[/name_u]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]

All of these are darling! This may be a little out there for you, but [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Juneau[/name_u], or [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Juno[/name_f]? [name_u]Juneau[/name_u] being after the capital of [name_f]Alaska[/name_f]. You could even just shorten it to [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] if you like that best. I think it’s adorable, and it has an Alaskan reference!

Caty – Thanks! I’m surprised that that one has gotten so much love, as it’s a little elaborate. But lovely.

ElliCrow – Agreed. Put all the meanings together and you get Renowned fairy warrior of the sea. I think he’d be pleased as punch with that.

Marshmallow – I was going to explore [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] connections next! I was born there and have lived there so it has special significance for me as well. Your list makes a great short list of mine.

Thanks for the input all!

I’d go with [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venice[/name_f] or [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venezia[/name_f]. The other combos are pretty but they feel contrived as honour names [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is on my list as well! I love the idea of using [name_f]Venice[/name_f], since the gentleman you want to honor liked it so well.

I agree with this! I think both are lovely. I don’t see why you can’t just use [name_f]Venice[/name_f].

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Venezia[/name_f] is very

Thanks! I honestly wish I could just ask him to choose a middle name, but I can’t.

I do prefer to be direct as possible, but overall the point is to capture a part of his essence. This is for personal association so that when I hear, think, write the name I think of him and I wanted to explore some further possibilities. I don’t think that’s contrived at all. These all achieve that for us and I know he’d pick a name within these themes.

[name_f]Venice[/name_f] is a consideration, but it sounds a bit off with our last name. I still enjoy exploring the options, as I have the time to.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_m]Vine[/name_m], and [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] leapt off the page for me.

If I could throw in a suggestion, it would be [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f], a reference to the Fearn (alder tree) of the Celtic Ogham. Alder is related to prophecy, divination, and intuition, and alder twigs are used as faerie charms. There is also an interesting link to water, as it causes alder wood to harden rather than rot. [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is a plant of its own with some serious literary cred - everything from [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m]. [name_f]Fern[/name_f] lore includes the ability to confer invisibility, assist in the alchemical transformation of mercury to silver, and magically open locks. Plus ferns are so delicate and lacy…almost like little faeries themselves!

I like [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u]

Oh Oh Oh…

I just saw on another thread a name from the Maori language:

Taioma ([name_m]Ty[/name_m]-oh-ma) means running with the tide.

So cool, huh? Sigh. I just love it when threads come together…
