To Zeke or not to Zeke?

I’ve seen the name [name]Zeke[/name] floating around a bit. [name]Just[/name] curious as to if you think it is popular/going to get popular soon. I have always loved this name but fear that it might be getting more widely known and used just like the Zanes out there. We have just recently ran into a little [name]Zeke[/name] at church so that’s what got us thinking about it. We love it, but don’t want our little boy to be one of the three or four Zekes in a class or baseball game like there was for my brother [name]Zachary[/name] about ten years ago. What do you think? [name]Just[/name] an unlikely run-in?

I think [name]Zeke[/name] is a great name for a little boy! Where i am from you barely hear it. I think it is definitely usable nowadays.

It’s interesting that you cite [name]Zane[/name] as an example of a name becoming more widely known. In the US, it has hovered between 250 and 220 since 1999–very little movement in either direction.

As a stand-alone, I don’t think [name]Zeke[/name] will become wildly popular anytime soon. It’s only just entered the Top 1000 and doesn’t have another trend (like being an -ayden) to launch it into sudden stardom. However, [name]Ezekiel[/name] has been on a slow climb since the 1990s and is now just within the Top 200, not too many steps higher than [name]Zane[/name]. I imagine a fair few of those boys go by [name]Zeke[/name]…

I think [name]Ezekiel[/name] and [name]Zeke[/name] are too heavily Biblical or casual (respectively) to become the next [name]Zachary[/name]. I wouldn’t worry about that degree of usage, especially just [name]Zeke[/name] on its own. I guess it comes down to how you feel about your potential [name]Zeke[/name] sharing a few Ezekiels’ nicknames since there are now as many young Ezekiels out there as there are Zanes.

On a personal level, btw, I have never met a little [name]Zane[/name] or a little [name]Zeke[/name]. Names ranked in the 200s–let alone the 900s–don’t account for that many babies, so I would say that [name]Zeke[/name] is safe. Go with what you love!

My husband is a teacher and he’s had a few kids named [name]Ezekiel[/name] nn [name]Zeke[/name]. Not more than one each year though, and he usually has 60-80 students every year. Old Testament names like that are very popular amongst the Hispanic community in our area, and that is the majority of my husband’s students. Otherwise, I don’t think he would have had as many. I really like the name [name]Zeke[/name] personally, and I would consider it if it didn’t clash with our last name  I don’t think it will get nearly as popular as [name]Zachary[/name], unless there is some star/popular movie or book character with that name. Sadly, there is no way to control that

I can see [name]Zeke[/name] getting a little more popular since Z names are all the rage, but to be honest, [name]Zeke[/name] sounds more redneck than cool to me.

I only know one, and he’s probably 18 by now. I remember thinking that his name was a very daring choice at the time, but adorable too.

I think it will get a little more popular but not too much. These are both great sites to see the popularity of names in the US and [name]England[/name] & [name]Wales[/name]. Baby Names in England & Wales - http://www.babynames.com/name/ZEKE

In [name]England[/name] and [name]Wales[/name] the name [name]Zeke[/name] was given to 21 babies in 2010 put it’s been rising lately.
In the US [name]Zeke[/name] is currently at #971.

[name]Ive[/name] never met a little [name]Zeke[/name] or an [name]Ezekiel[/name] for that matter. [name]Love[/name] [name]Zeke[/name]!

I’ve never met a [name]Zane[/name], though I love the name.

[name]Zeke[/name] I also really like. I’ve met two in my life, both young and within the last few years–1 is about 7 and the other is a newborn.

Thanks for the input. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to go ahead and use it. [name]Even[/name] though it has a ways to go I still feel like it is more popular than what websites say. I have seen it a lot recently as well as [name]Zane[/name]. My husband knows two or three Zanes. I guess if you fall in love with a name just go for it and use it. My Mom named my brothers [name]Zachary[/name] and [name]Wyatt[/name] and at the time were not popular, esp [name]Wyatt[/name]. Now look! It’s in the top 100!

I’ve actually really liked [name]Zeke[/name] since I was little. Like you, it just seems to be increasing in popularity - but I think this is more in word than actually usage. [name]Even[/name] if it increases a little in popularity, I don’t see it skyrocketing or becoming so popular that you’d need to worry about him being one [name]Zeke[/name] of several in a class.

I don’t think it will get overly popular, although [name]Ezekiel[/name] is rising so there may be more kids using it as a nickname. I kind of feel it falls in with the [name]Ezra[/name] crowd, there are some people who [name]LOVE[/name] it but its too “different” for others so that will keep its popularity down. On a separate note my fiancé’s mom calls him [name]Zeke[/name] even though his name is [name]Zachary[/name] (I don’t know why though!)

I’m expecting baby #8 and [name]Zeke[/name] is our top choice for a boy (don’t know what we’re having). I don’t know any other Zekes in our neck of the woods. I thought I’d share something since you’re worried about a name becoming too popular. Our oldest is [name]Emma[/name] and she just turned 18. Of course the name [name]Emma[/name] became an epidemic later, but we chose it in 1995 when it was much less popular. [name]Even[/name] if the name you choose gains popularity later, I don’t think you’ll regret it as long as you’re a few years ahead of the curve. Having the hottest baby name is great when you’re a teenager! I also have a 20-something friend named [name]Kaitlin[/name]. Her name was way ahead of the popularity curve and sounds fresh for someone her age. [name]Hope[/name] that helps

 Thanks for taking time to share with me! Congrats! That is so exciting! I am the oldest of 6. I love my big family!
Everything you said makes sense and it makes me feel better. 11 years ago my Mother had a boy and named him [name]Wyatt[/name]. He was a surprise. Unheard of at the time and now look at it! It’s getting to be very popular! So I understand that we just need to pick a name that we love and everything will be ok! Good luck with everything and God bless!

I love it - I know a 3 year old [name]Zeke[/name]. It works on its own or is a cute nn for [name]Ezekiel[/name]. I much prefer it to [name]Zane[/name] which reminds me of the word “insane.”

[name]Glad[/name] I could help! Blessings

I personally, have only known 1 [name]Zeke[/name]. Different names are popular in different areas though, so I see your concern. I say if you love it though, go for it!

My sister has told me she intends to use [name]Ezekiel[/name], NN [name]Zeke[/name]. I had personally favoured [name]Hezekiah[/name], NN [name]Zeke[/name]. I think I’ll let her have her dibs, though.

Well known, in the Top Thousand, yet outside the Top Hundred, is sort of the sweet spot for me. Especially for boys. So perhaps I am coming at this from a different angle. I’ve gotten enough shade for considering popular boys’ names ("[name]Gabriel[/name]?!") to worry about [name]Zeke[/name] at all. It is really the Top 50 and above I would avoid. And even then… if I loved it… I just mostly don’t.

I grew up with a [name]Zeke[/name]–we pronounced it [name]Zee[/name]-kee and also [name]Zeek[/name], depending on our moods. He answered to both. His full name was [name]Zechariah[/name]. I always liked the name!

I posted on another thread, but [name]Zeke[/name] is my nephew’s name. He turned 2 in [name]December[/name]. My sister and [name]BIL[/name] loved the name [name]Zeke[/name] but didn’t like [name]Ezekiel[/name] so “just [name]Zeke[/name]” he is! I know another [name]Zeke[/name] who is 3 and its short for [name]Ezekiel[/name]. I also knew a man growing up by this name who was older (I was a child…but assume he was in his 50’s when I was growing up in the 80’s?). It always had an Amish feel to me, but, now I only really see it as a little boys name. It could become popular, but, I don’t see it hitting the top 10 any time soon.
