Hello. My husband and I both love Tolkien as a first name (boy) but would like some honest, hold no punches feedback. Go!
PS - would be brother to a [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and sure to be another strawberry blond.

I absolutely love it. What a lovely homage. Sounds like other names so isn’t too obvious of a surname.
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce that? I am seeing as “Toll-Kee-In”
I hope you’re joking.
I wouldn’t use Tolkien as a first name, but it’d make a nice middle.
Ofcourse she joking)) Anyway the name for boy has a big meaning! Choose carefully
Personally I love it as a middle, but I’m not sure how I feel about it as a first. I think it could work, but I’m not sure I love it.
Honestly, I love the author Tolkien, but I think that literary surnames as first names often look really tacky in a “We’re READERS” kind of way. (like people who want to honor F. [name_m]Scott[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m] by naming their kid [name_m]Gatsby[/name_m]…why not [name_m]Scott[/name_m]? or [name_m]Fitz[/name_m]? or [name_u]Jay[/name_u]? It seems more an in-your-face hipster thing than an honoring F. [name_m]Scott[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m] thing. Or people who insist on naming a girl [name_u]Austen[/name_u] instead of, say, [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], etc. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] has dozens of gorgeous names to choose from; [name_u]Austen[/name_u] as a name seems less about honoring her and more about boasting that you read well-known authors, to me.)
Tolkien’s name was [name_m]John[/name_m] (middles were [name_m]Ronald[/name_m] [name_m]Reuel[/name_m]); names that could honor him include those, as well as [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], or [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] (his sons), or many of the characters he created have lovely names that aren’t as obviously from LotR. [name_u]Sam[/name_u] is an excellent choice (I would personally only use Samwise if it was in the middle), [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] (nicknamed [name_m]Pip[/name_m]!) is a gorgeous boy’s name, Theoden nicknamed [name_u]Theo[/name_u], Eomer (this is my personal favorite, and I’m planning on using this on a future son!)
I just think there are a lot of lovely ways to honor JRR Tolkien without being so obvious about it.
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is a lovely name, by the way!
Would be lovely as a mn, I think that it’s too adventurous for a fn.
Go for it! I don’t see the problem with it as a first name. There are several nicknames to choose from and he is sure to be the only one with it. It doesn’t stray too far from other n ending surname names like [name_m]Tennyson[/name_m], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_u]Lennon[/name_u], or other author names like [name_u]Poe[/name_u] or [name_m]Hughes[/name_m].
Have fun with your [name_m]Tollie[/name_m] or Key or Enny.
That is super awesome! Tolkien is a great name! I would pair it with a more easily recognizable middle name to ground it.
I adore this name for a boy, if isn’t used for first name then it’d make a lovely middle name as well
While I love the author, I’d probably use it as a mn only as Toke or Toker is likely to be at least the school yard nn.
My honest reaction as soon as I saw the title of this thread was to exclaim, out loud, at 4:30 A.M., “Oh, that is cool.” I totally think you should go for it; it’s a nice homage and the name itself just feels classic while still maintaining a sense of originality.
If you are concerned about the reference being a bit too on-the-nose (it’s not subtle, but I don’t think it’s in any way obnoxious, either) I also liked the earlier suggestion of [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m], which is a gorgeous and evocative name.
I think I will agree with your opinion
It’s very obviously JRR, but that’s not a bad thing! Literary and author names become almost commonplace, what with [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m].
I personally really like it!
I think as long as you’re okay with people knowing how big [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings fans you are and commenting on it a lot, then go for it! I think it has an awesome look and sound.
No, I would not do it. And as a first name, it is not serious and not wearable to me, I’m sorry.
What if your kid doesn’t like Tolkien…? He would be stuck with this name and locked up in your readers lifestyle. A kid is not a character from a book.
Theoden and [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] are beautiful names.
