Too Cutesy?

A few names I’ve taken to are;

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]

Are these too cutesy to use on their own, or will they work?

I think they can stand on their own. My favorites would be [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], & [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. For example, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], & [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] don’t seem too cutesy since they are traditionally their own name versus being only nicknames. I hope that makes sense.

Most of those have a long history of usage as a full name (e.g., [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f]), so I don’t think any of them is really “too much”. [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] are too cutesy for my personal taste, but I don’t think they’re in any way unusable. I just prefer simple gorgeous [name_f]Rose[/name_f], using [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] as a nickname. I would probably be surprised to meet an adult named [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] because I do think it sounds a bit childish to me, but again, that’s just my preference.

The only names that I consider too cutesy are ones like [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] or [name_f]Bunny[/name_f], or ones like [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s children (e.g., [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] [name_f]Pamela[/name_f], [name_f]Petal[/name_f] [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f], [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] [name_m]Bear[/name_m]) where there isn’t a fall-back name that’s not cutesy should the child want to use one when they’re older. I was a very serious child, and wouldn’t have appreciated having a moniker like that!

They’re not too cutesy to use on their own, many people do just that. I think that it’s always nice to have a legal name for the birth certificate that can be used for resumes and job applications. It gives your child the choice of which to use in the future. I have an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] who goes exclusively by her nn of [name_f]Evie[/name_f] but I like knowing that she can pull out [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] on a law school application. Research does show that people with formal legal names get better jobs, more job opportunities, etc. so I figure it can’t hurt.

Also, few people know what’s on a kid’s birth certificate. She could be [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f] and no one would ever know.

A few options:
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] – this works on its own
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - this works on its own
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - [name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] - [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]

Good luck! I love all of these names!

To me, there’s a difference between something sounding childish (not as in “You’re so childish for liking those names” but like “I can only see those names on a child”) and cutesy. [name_u]Boo[/name_u], [name_f]Peaches[/name_f], [name_f]Coco[/name_f] – those are too cutsey. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f] – those are childish (I can only picture them on a kid).

So to me (because my style tends towards preferring long, full names with lots of options for every type of girl my child might grow into) all of those names I can only picture on a kid and some of them on teens. For me, I love [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] but I will use [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] because she might grow up and want to be Sia or Phia. I love [name_f]Millie[/name_f] but I’ll using [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] so she can grow up and decide to be [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f] etc.

Thoughts:

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] – I prefer [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] but it wears fine as just [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] – A perfectly legit full name. For me personally, I would use [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], though
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] – This is a perfectly legit full name
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] – This one is a fine name in it’s own right. (I can picture it up to like, 16 and on a little grandma so she can wear it and define it in the middle space)
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] – So pretty and I love it a lot. I would use [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] – I like this one fine, slightly prefer [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (still cute and young, to me)
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] – This one I feel needs a fuller name
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] – This one I feel does need a fuller name

thanks! A few more I like:

[name_f]Gracie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (but not with [name_f]Honey[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] LOL)
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]

I’m not thaaaaat big of a fan of [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] anymore, but I like [name_f]Martha[/name_f] as a full name for [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] for [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

I really like these names, but I would probably go with a longer/more adult form for most of them. For some reason I feel [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] do stand on their own though – maybe just because they are the most commonly used.
Of course [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] are traditionally nns for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I also don’t think it’s a stretch to use [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] for [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_u]Marian[/name_u], etc. There are plenty of more grown-up forms of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], the most obvious being [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. For [name_f]Millie[/name_f] you could use [name_f]Camille[/name_f]. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] could be an alternative to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], or use [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elinor[/name_f] as previous poster suggested.

[name_f]Millie[/name_f] could also be short for [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] (if that doesn’t make you think of Ms [name_u]Parker[/name_u]-Bowles, haha) or [name_f]Milena[/name_f]. I actually think [name_f]Millie[/name_f] could be a stand-alone name. Or it could be short for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and then you have the option of [name_f]Millie[/name_f] or [name_f]Tillie[/name_f].

I’m kind of in love with [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] as a short-form for [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], but my husband would NEVER go for it and it’s probably just because of my deep love for Professor McGonagall.

[name_f]Lottie[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] are fine on their own, though I personally prefer simple and gorgeous [name_f]Grace[/name_f] with [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] as a nickname.

Thoughts on these:

[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] – It’s so sweet but the one [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] I know hates how childish her names sounds (at 8)that she begs to go by her middle name
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] – It’s adorable but I can’t picture anyone over 5
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f] – I think of the mouse :stuck_out_tongue: This one is cutsey, to me.
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] – As a flower name, it’s as a legit a full name as [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f] – This is like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]. I can’t see it over 5

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you want full name suggestions for any of these? Or are you just looking for opinions?

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - works on its own, an accepted [name_m]French[/name_m] diminutive of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - works on its own. Can also be a nickname for [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucina[/name_f].
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - works on its own. Can be a nickname for [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilith[/name_f].
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - works on its own.
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - nickname for [name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f].
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] will last through adulthood, whilst [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is a bit too cutesy.
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - short for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]/[name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], [name_f]Camilla[/name_f], etc.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] opinions for now, haha  I think I’ve taken to the British trend of diminutive names too much.

I know several girls with all of these names, many grown women. They seem completely usable.

I don’t get the concept of names being ‘too cute’ to be used alone.

I think to give your child options is a good idea in general but they might still end up hating their name and the possible nicknames for it and wish they would have a name like the ones you listed.
All of your choices have been used on their own for quite a while now, so I do think they can easily be used without a longer name.
Plus, if you’re going to call your daughter [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] at all times, why use [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? Instead you could give her a longer middle which she can use if she happens to dislike her first name!

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - I actually prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] holds its own better.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] can totally stand alone, but there are also some nice longer versions.
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - [name_f]Lily[/name_f] can most definitely stand alone! I love it.
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - I think it can be a name in its own right, but it’s a little flimsy. I’ve known a lot of dogs named [name_f]Daisy[/name_f].
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] is a nickname in my book.
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - Can stand on its own, but I prefer it as a nickname for [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] or [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f].
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - I like this as a nickname for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] - [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] can stand alone, but it is a bit on the childish side. It’s reminiscent of the children’s book mouse, [name_f]Maisy[/name_f].

From your list I prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], but I have actually known women or girls who go by most of the names that you have listed and on the right individual any of them could work and not be overly cutesy. Alternately to previous posters’ suggetion that you use a longer name to get to the “cutesy” names, if you really love the “ie” ending on a name but are worried your the bearer of the name wouldn’t always appreciate it, you could always choose a name that could be readily shortened from the "ie"ending, such as [name_f]Nel[/name_f] from [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] from [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] so if your daughter ever feels like the [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] mentioned above, you could just suggest she go by [name_f]Grace[/name_f].

I know they’re common place in [name_f]England[/name_f] (my best friend in Liverpool had the same reaction) but in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]/US I wasn’t sure. I do like them all on their own though.

Only [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] are too cutesy to me. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]/what have you are a lot more functional. [name_f]Millie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] I’m on the fence about. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], no question!

The only one I think is TOO cutesy is [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Rose[/name_f] would be a better name and then you could call her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] all you want. But most of them are fine.
