Older siblings are [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Jake[/name_m], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Truman[/name_m].
[name_m]Emile[/name_m] is probably my favorite, and my husband does seem to like it. He has concerns about people just thinking it’s a typo or creative spelling, with the long lived popularity of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. I’m sure it would happen some, but I don’t know how much I care.
With the other two… too much president? [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]’s middle wasn’t for the president, but I have concerns about it seeming that way if we add a [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] or [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] to the family. On the other hand, it’s his middle, so meh?
Thoughts? Totally open to other suggestions, as well!
Personally I don’t think I’d notice unless you pointed it out, especially since [name_m]Truman[/name_m] is a middle name. I think both [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] and [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] are handsome contenders. [name_m]Emile[/name_m] is also stunning. I think it probably will get confused for [name_f]Emily[/name_f] sometimes, but… meh. I don’t think that’s a dealbreaker.
Of the three, I like [name_m]Emile[/name_m] the best. If you don’t have a middle name already, [name_m]Emile[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] would be great!
Because [name_m]Truman[/name_m] is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]'s middle name I don’t think it would be an issue, I really like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] together.
As a [name_u]Brit[/name_u], didn’t even work out the theme once you’d pointed it out!
I think [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] goes best the the rest of the names.
I don’t think it’s an issue. Besides family, I’m sure most people don’t even remember your child’s middle name. Also, as a mother of a son who’s first name is [name_m]Truman[/name_m], lots of people don’t go straight to the presidential association. Some do, of course, but many associate it with the [name_m]Truman[/name_m] Show (and far less associate the name with the author who we named him after, haha).
I love all your kids names and I love all your options. My favorite is [name_m]Franklin[/name_m]. Both my son’s were almost [name_m]Franklin[/name_m].
Is [name_m]Emile[/name_m] pronounced like [name_m]Emil[/name_m] or like [name_f]Emily[/name_f]? I’m with your husband–I don’t like that extra -e at the end. If it were spelled [name_m]Emil[/name_m], it’d get my vote! My second choice would be [name_m]Franklin[/name_m].
It’s just the [name_m]French[/name_m] variation of [name_m]Emil[/name_m]. I’ve never met anyone with either spelling, but the pop culture references I’m most familiar with have the -e. I also think it’s more likely that people will be completely unfamiliar with the name and think the name is just incomplete, that the -y was left off. I also think it looks incomplete next to our last name somehow (there’s a double -t and a double -f). I don’t know, not sure I can win there either way, and spelling issues are something I’ve specifically worked to avoid with all of my kid’s names.
ETA: I don’t think my husband’s issue is the -e. I doubt he knows the more standard spelling, as [name_m]Emile[/name_m] [name_m]Hirsch[/name_m] is his reference. I also think [name_m]Emil[/name_m] would just get pronounced “Emmel” here in the Midwest. I don’t even know why I’m that worried about people misreading it. My kids are homeschooled anyway, and most adult situations just require a quick correction.
As a Canadian, it took me a minute to work out this theme. Because you used [name_m]Truman[/name_m] as a middle name, I think this potential theme is a non-issue.
Great list, btw. I love [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] best, on it’s own, and as a part of your sibset.
Thanks for the the feedback! I think I may move [name_m]Emil[/name_m]/e to the middle and try out [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] on my husband. It’s come up with prior kids. We’ve talked about [name_u]Francis[/name_u], but have a niece whose middle is [name_f]Frances[/name_f], also just blech after finishing up House of Cards recently. I really love [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] for a little kid. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t love that our last name starts with a K sound, but hopefully he’d go by his full name in adulthood and not [name_m]Frank[/name_m].
Can you tell I’ve been sick today and have had time to overthink things?
@futuremama - thank you! [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] was a last minute follow-the-heart husband-can’t-say-no-bc-I’m-in-labor addition. Incidentally, she’s insistent that this baby should be named [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] if it’s a girl, so at least she likes it!
[name_m]Martin[/name_m] is also a president name, [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_u]Van[/name_u] [name_m]Buren[/name_m]. Although I did not notice the theme until you pointed it out, it became pretty themey. I would be more concerned with [name_m]Martin[/name_m] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] or [name_m]Franklin[/name_m]. Most people do not know middle names. Close family and friends might question it.
Ha, I suppose I’d not considered that. I guess I’m not super worried about [name_m]Martin[/name_m]. Its usage throughout history is as ubiquitous as [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], etc. I guess my concern centered around [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_u]Quincy[/name_u], and [name_m]Truman[/name_m] being fairly distinct as I don’t think they’ve ever been particularly common.
[name_m]Martin[/name_m] becomes more distinct, at least for me, because of having the other president names. [name_m]Martin[/name_m] by itself, sure, does not say president. Three presidential names definitely feels like a theme, at least in my opinion.
I think [name_m]Emile[/name_m] is great! I grew up in Germany, where we have [name_m]Emil[/name_m] [EH-meel]. But I have to say that I prefer [name_m]Emile[/name_m], which I would pronounce in a [name_m]French[/name_m] way [Eh-MEEL]. Very elegant!
I wouldn’t worry about the [name_f]Emily[/name_f] thing. I have met so many Christians, Kristens, Christinas, Kirstens etc. who CONSTANTLY get misspelled despite having a common version of a very common name that I just don’t take this as a valid argument anymore against less common names.
ETA: Oh, and I would have never noticed the president themeyness unless you mentioned it!
