Top 100 baby names in Canada 2013

Saw this on Appellation Mountain early and figured I’d share it  I’m not the only Canadian berry who wishes for a more detailed list, it seems, but anyway:

It’s somewhat similar to the American SSA list but some big differences- e.g. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] isn’t in the top 20! It combines spellings so e.g. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] are counted as one name. You can definitely see the [name_m]French[/name_m] influence from [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] too, with names like [name_f]Camille[/name_f] and [name_u]Antoine[/name_u].

Interesting that [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Mia[/name_f], which I feel are different names with different pronunciations, are combined into one listing, while [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m]/[name_m]Jaxson[/name_m] has a listing and is considered separate from [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]. (???)

I do love that a lot more vintage-type names ([name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f]) seem to be on the Canadian list.

Thank you for sharing!

Super suprised to see [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_f]Justine[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f] & [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] in the top 100. Wow. As for boys, I didn’t expect to see [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Emile[/name_m], and [name_m]Malik[/name_m]. Okay, so maybe [name_m]Malik[/name_m] was one of those you were kind of both ways on. I think this may have been a tad bit influenced by boy band singer Zayn [name_m]Malik[/name_m], who incase anyone is wondering is a muslim.

I’m just happy to see [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] out of the top 10. Stay strong, Canadians. I like seeing the [name_m]French[/name_m] influence in [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f], [name_u]Antoine[/name_u], and (swoon!) [name_u]Maxime[/name_u].

I don’t really get seeing [name_u]Harper[/name_u] on there. As a Canadian, that’s all Prime Minister [name_u]Harper[/name_u] to me. Then again, my politics tend in another direction…

ETA: Sorry, I meant top 10, not top 12. Oops…

I absolutely [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] that they combine the spellings to homonym names! I wish the SS list would do the same, it’s utterly logical.

Very surprised by [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]!

Still disappointed by all the [name_u]Kayden[/name_u]/[name_u]Hayden[/name_u]/[name_u]Jayden[/name_u]/[name_u]Brayden[/name_u] love, but what can you do?

Thank God for the belle province of [name_m]Quebec[/name_m]. [name_m]French[/name_m] Canadian names make the list much less predictable and more interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Mmhm, some of the [name_m]French[/name_m] names are really pretty and unexpected. I find [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] a bit odd as a name though.

@[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]- I like the name [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and think of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] before Prime Minister [name_u]Harper[/name_u]. But it does make me wonder, will other prime minister names catch on like president names in the US? Trudeau, Laurier, [name_m]Macdonald[/name_m]…?

I’ve never met an [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], but I have met a couple of people named Océane. It sounds way weirder to me in English.

As to [name_u]Harper[/name_u], when I lived in Ottawa, I had several friends who worked on Parliament [name_m]Hill[/name_m], so it’s all PM [name_u]Harper[/name_u] to me. [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_m]Clark[/name_m], and [name_m]Martin[/name_m] are all PM names that are also regular names. [name_m]Pearson[/name_m] would work and Laurier is kind of cool too, but if Diefenbaker catches on, that would take the cake!

Thanks so much for posting this! I always find it pretty hard to find Canadian stats, and yes I wish it was more detailed too. Also wish that the lists on the side for each province were at least Top 100 too. This does show that sometimes estimating the popularity based on the American stats doesn’t always work. I’m a little bummed about a couple of these names being more popular than I thought they’d be.

It’s interesting to me that [name_f]Maelie[/name_f]/Maely is so high on the list. I’ve never actually heard that name in real life, or anywhere else for that matter.

It’s also interesting just how many [name_m]French[/name_m]-sounding names did make it on the list. I wouldn’t think that there were enough [name_m]French[/name_m]-Canadians to tip the scale this drastically. Specifically for the girls list. The boys list seems pretty predictable, save a few.

Favourites that I didn’t expect:
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_u]Romy[/name_u]
[name_f]Maude[/name_f]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]

Interesting that [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Olivier[/name_m] are combined, but not [name_f]Arianne[/name_f] and [name_f]Arianna[/name_f]?
