Top 7 - help us decide

First daughter is [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Lore[/name_f]! Thx.

I like [name_f]Ginevre[/name_f] but my name is [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] so doesn’t work!

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphina[/name_f] are my favorites mostly for sound and style :cherry_blossom::sunny:

  1. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] - Probably a top 5 name on my personal hypothetical list, I love the nickname options even though the only [name_f]Florence[/name_f] I know goes by her full name no nns (absolutely could use [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Floss[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_m]Ren[/name_m] or go with the more cutesy vibe of Florrie/Flossie or maybe even in some instances make a cute first name middle name combo out of it to use as a nickname). To me it feels very whimsical, woodsy but still feminine without being too over the top and I think it could suit someone in all stages of life from baby/toddler to girl/teenager to young adult/old lady.
  2. [name_f]Athena[/name_f] - As you can clearly tell by my top 3 of your names I’m very into anything classic and traditional but also love a good mythical name which is why [name_f]Athena[/name_f] fairs so high on my list. As for nickname options, [name_f]Athena[/name_f] on my personal list has a nickname of “Thea” which I think could work pretty well since as you can tell if you look at my bio pretty much all my names listed apart from the very short ones have a nickname next to them from the most obvious to the most stretchy and I’m a huge nickname lover. Might not be the most obvious choice but all the letters are there.
  3. [name_f]Viola[/name_f] - Reaching the names on your list I’m lukewarm about, I really like it as a name for all the reasons you listed but much prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] which might be the reason I’m put off from this name. The pronunciation is also another thing that crossed my mind which I see you’re also worried about.
Due to my unfamiliarity and lack of strong opinions with the next few names I’m just going to rank them without a long description:
  4. [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Delphinia[/name_f]
  6. Firenze/Fiorenza
  7. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
At the end of the day you’re the ones making a child therefore don’t take my opinions too seriously if you like a name I don’t since every name out there is beautiful and unique in its own way.

Naming is so hard! Don’t use anything you’re lukewarm about, the right name will come

  1. Florence - I have recently fallen in love with her. Such a stunning sound and elegant feel. If I had a little Florence, I’d sometimes call her Fleur or Flora :leaves: :cherry_blossom:

  2. Viola - stunning sound! There are so many beautiful names related to theatre… Violetta would be a beautiful alternative…

  3. Delphinia - I love it, but everybody in my family associates it with dolphins and not with the gorgeous flower :woman_facepalming:t2:

Your daughter has a gorgeous name! I love it! I have always thought Margaux, Gwendoline/ Gwendolyn, Freya, Rowena, Cybele, Olympia, Sylvaine, Ysolde, Zelie, Azalea, Zinnia and Juno would make cool sister names for Beatrix  Zelda matches Beatrix really well, but I just really associate it with a videogame

If he doesn’t like Winifred (LOVE!), then perhaps Willamina? Since Delphinia is on your list, then perhaps you’d like Celestia, Astoria, Cordelia, Vinetria, Cadencia, Gloria…

I really love the name [name_f]Florence[/name_f]! [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], or [name_f]Flossie[/name_f] are other nickname alternatives

I would go with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] or [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. These names are Italian names too (Viola is very Fashionable here in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] recently).
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] is a great and elegant option. Please don’t use Firenza, it is not a name actually and it sounds a bit Strange to Italian ears if you want to honour Heritage (the person name is [name_f]Fiorenza[/name_f] and the city is [name_m]Firenze[/name_m], but [name_m]Firenze[/name_m] is not used as a person’s name. And anyways [name_f]Fiorenza[/name_f] feels very outdated now)
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] or [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] or [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f] are Fantastic <33

I would pick [name_f]Florence[/name_f] for sure! I love it, and it’s very high on my list as well. We have the nicknames [name_f]Flora[/name_f] for day to day use, but Flee as the “cutesy” familiar nickname that my partner and I would use. I don’t think you need to use [name_f]Flo[/name_f]!

I love Firienze/Fiorenza and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]! You could use [name_f]Lorie[/name_f] as a nn maybe??
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] could have [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as a nn possibly
I don’t like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Delphinia[/name_f], or [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - one of my favourites! admittedly, i am greek, and am biased, but i love it

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] - as someone who is a gamer i like the sound, but it doesnt really fit as a name for a child imo

[name_f]Delphinia[/name_f] - also not my favourite, but there are options. [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], for one, or you could always go the [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] route.

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - hey look its athena again (minerva is athena’s roman counterpart). this one doesn’t seem to fit as well either, feels clunky

[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - not incredibly common, but i have met maybe one or two. im also not a fan of flo, but florence in its full form seems really fun!

Firenze/Fiorenza - this one feels wild. could definitely be a good one for other people but for me it feels kind of made up?? i dont even know how to explain it but theres a Vibe. out of the two, though, i like [name_f]Fiorenza[/name_f].

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - if its vee-oh-la, i also love this one. although you did mention pronunciation issues adding “its not the musical instrument” and im going to be honest i dont know the alternative pronunciation lol.

First of all, I don’t consider popular names a real problem. There are sooo many names being used today that even the most popular names (top ten) aren’t being used nearly as much as the tenth most popular name a century ago. Back then, it took only a “handful” of names to cover the U.S. but now it takes hundreds! There’s a great article on the Swistle baby name blog called “Even the Top Ten is Not Necessarily the Kiss of Death” that talks about all the statistics of this. (It was written a while ago, but still relevant today)

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]: It’s a strong girls’ name. Definitely not one of my favorites, but I see the appeal. I don’t think not being Greek is a problem at all, however.
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]: This is a super sweet and spunky name! You could also use it as a combo nickname (Zoe [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] nicked Zelda)
[name_f]Delphinia[/name_f]: A very pretty and unique name! It will very likely grow on you once you meet your baby with this name (if you chose it) If you were firm about using the full name from the beginning, that would definitely help with nicknames.
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]: I don’t think the nerve sound is at all a problem in [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], I didn’t notice it at all. (and nerves aren’t necessarily a bad thing)
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]: [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is a wonderful name and one of my favorites! It’s botanical and sweet! You could use the nickname [name_f]Flora[/name_f] if you don’t like [name_f]Flo[/name_f].
Firenze/Fiorenza: This name certainly could have pronunciation issues, but is a very strong feminine name, especially [name_f]Fiorenza[/name_f]. If you used [name_m]Fire[/name_m] as a nickname, maybe spell it Feera/Feira?
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]: [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is such a wonderful name! I didn’t even think of the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] connection although I know the play it’s from. (And I think a [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] connection is actually really cool). It does have pronunciation issues, but if you were firm about your pronunciation and maybe used a nickname that verifes it, I think most people would get it after a few corrections.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] are my favorites from your list!

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] is timeless, full of history and majestic. As a nickname, you may consider [name_f]Attie[/name_f], Thena, [name_f]Ena[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Nena[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Tete[/name_f].

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is unexpected, elegant and distinct. Z names have a powerful, modern sound.

[name_f]Florence[/name_f] is colorful, sweet, romantic and gentle. With [name_f]Florence[/name_f], I would use the nicknames [name_f]Flor[/name_f], [name_f]Flower[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or Wren/Ren. [name_f]My[/name_f] parents didn’t like the most common nickname for my first name but that was not a big deal for them. With time, they found other nicknames they liked. I mostly go by my full name, anyway. I love the connection with [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. I love this choice for you!

I would like to suggest:
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Diantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f]

Athena - I don’t love enough for it to be on my list, but I do really like this. Strong and distinctive. Popularity might not be so much of an issue where you are specifically.

Zelda - I like the 1920s Art Deco glamour vibes more than I like the actual name (which I still quite like). The gaming association is most prevalent in modern collective consciousness though. I would think it was incredibly cool to meet one, but it doesn’t sound like it’s for you.

Delphinia - this is too flowery for my personal taste but it’s not my taste that matters. I do like the nn Delphi but you don’t - I wouldn’t bank on warming to an intuitive nn you dislike.

Minerva - I like the strength but not the nerve sound as you mentioned, nor the intuitive nn Minnie. I would like to meet one though, and it’s grand and mythological.

Florence - very nice name if very popular now - it’s starting to feel dare I say a little bit dull. I personally love Flo but again I wouldn’t go there if one of you hates an intuitive nn. Florrie, Floss / Flossie, Flora also nice but even if you drummed an alternative nn home you’re likely to hear Flo at some point so I think this is worth bearing in mind.

Firenze / Fiorenza - not my taste, a touch over-elaborate for me (nothing wrong with it though)

Viola - very nice. Vintage but not in an old-lady way, also feels contemporary and distinctive. Well known but not common / boring.

My faves are Athena, Zelda and Viola, with Viola probs topping my faves if pushed to choose just one. Florence and Minerva also good in their own ways. It doesn’t sound like any of them are the right one for you both though tbh, would it be worth exploring more options? I’m not going to suggest anything as you didn’t ask for suggestions, but there were lots of names that came to mind based on your top 7.

It’s difficult and compromise can often feel like two people both not getting what they want. The ultimate is a name you will both love singing and saying every day, but I’m aware realistically that lightbulb ‘the one’ moment doesn’t happen for everyone (even if only due to overthinking). I would already try to exhaust everything to find that though, I don’t think your naming styles are so different as to be unmarriageable, in fact I think they’re very complementary with a lot of crossover. Your collective style makes me think of the ‘noble’ style category on the baby name dna tool on here. Have you tried this? Might be worth a shot to see if anything mutually agreeable comes up, though I’m sure you’ve probably scoured so many options you feel a bit jaded with it all.

All the best to you both.

Is [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] really Italian/used in [name_f]Italy[/name_f]?

I am not sure if you are still searching for a name, but I thought I would throw out [name_f]Giselda[/name_f] “Zelda” as an idea if you do not like [name_f]Griselda[/name_f]! :slightly_smiling_face:[name_f][/name_f] Have a great day!

Yes.Rare but yes

I like [name_f]Athena[/name_f], nicknamed [name_f]Thea[/name_f].
