my newfound name obsession is with the name reuben. am i the only one? it feels a little “american south” (hi from england) but i still love it! it has such a lovely, round sound like a bell-peal. not cartoonishly manly but also but not mushily soft. it’s such a shame i don’t have any ancestors with the name, and i don’t really agree with the practise of stuffing the birth certificate with twenty thousand million meaningless middle names. i’d only heard of reuben sandwichess from american sitcoms but i do hate how the word rube comes from reuben that concludes my rant on how lovely a name reuben is and how i wish i had an excuse to bestow it upon an actual future son.
As an American, I can say it feels very un-Southern to me. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name!
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is such a cool name! Definitely [name_f]Americana[/name_f] vintage, I think of cornfields in Nebraska during the great depression. I also get some nerdy-cool rockabilly vibes from [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]: late 50’s/ early 60’s: black rimmed glasses and a flat-top buzz cut or rockabilly hairstyle, oxford shoes, rolled t-shirts and a black leather jacket. Think bowling alley and soda fountains.
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is definitely an excellent name!!
As someone from the American [name_u]South[/name_u], it doesn’t seem very [name_u]Southern[/name_u]! It actually feels more British to me (maybe due in small part to the sandwich).
While it’s not my taste, it’s an appealing name!
Oh wow, I’m so glad Im not the only one but I absolutely love [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! I am also from [name_f]England[/name_f] originally but have lived in the US for almost 20 years now. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is American-Greek and we almost names our second son [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] but he vetoed it for the exact reason that it felt a little too ‘American mushy’. I have met two Reubens in my time and both suit them perfectly. I would love to see a little [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] around!!
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] doesn’t really feel [name_u]Southern[/name_u] to me just very Jewish. I like it too!
I love the MCSM association!
I loooove the name [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! When I first heard the name I was 8 or 9 years old, and decided that if I ever have a son, that would be his name. It’s been many years, and I still think it’s a good idea, lol.
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is beautiful!
I love [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! Unfortunately it doesn’t work with my last name or I would use it in a heart beat . I love the versatility of the name and think it fits well with all stages
The nicknames
[name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_m]Ben[/name_m]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is cool and doesn’t feel strongly American to me. I’m in [name_f]England[/name_f] too and I know lots of little boys and a few young adults named Reuben/Rueben/Ruben, it’s been pretty popular here for a while. I love the nickname [name_u]Rue[/name_u]!
my best friend is named [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! he goes by [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] as a nickname, and sometimes [name_u]Rue[/name_u]! He’s the coolest guy I know, so that definitely influences my opinion of it!
I think the name is so cuddly and sweet. I love how soft, yet strong it is.
It doesn’t feel southern to me at all. I’m from the Northeast and there are strong associations here, so that’s probably why!
I absolutely love the name [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], and honestly being from the [name_u]South[/name_u], it seems more British to me!
I bought coffee from a new place last week and the regulars were calling the barista “Rubes” and I thought it was so cute. [name_m]Alas[/name_m], my OH is [name_u]Robin[/name_u] so we can’t have a [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and a Reuben/Ruben, but I love it for someone else.
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] just feels like a biblical classic to me? It was high on our list. I don’t think you need any ancestors with the name to use it or anything. It has a lovely warmth to it.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! The only one I know is a very cute British little boy, if that allays your concerns at all. I have [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] on my own list—I am American, but not southern at all.
. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a Bible name and fairly commonly known at that, so I don’t think it really is too tied to any nationality or country. Plus, the nns Reu/Roo and [name_m]Ben[/name_m] are so cute!
Nobody needs a reason to name a child [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]. It’s just a cool name!
as in the piggy? oh nooooo.
fair warning: this is an unstructured ramble on naming fashions
it upsets me how names drop in and out of fashion. i like the sense of generational continuity passing on names has. choosing names purely for the cool factor feels empty to me. but maybe that’s because i’m from a family where half the women on one side are named isabel and the other half maria pfft. helps that a little further back and on the other side my fam has some very cool names that so happen to be in style, alfred and rose for instance.
besides, i don’t think it’s fair to burden a child with baggage from certain names. for instance, what do you expect from a walter? my first thought is the swotty mummy’s boy from the beano. not that there’s anything wrong with being a swotty mummy’s boy. i’m a lifelong swotty mummy’s girl myself hehe. still, what do you think when you hear the name james? nothing, really. a james is free to carve out his own identity.
it’s a good thing that i’m a hobbyist writer, and get to use all the names i actually really like on my fictional babies! RIP nigel, basil, cyril, edwin, percy — we hardly knew you.
He is SO cute though~~~ If you were a fan of the series you would like it too
