Welcome to the Nameberry community! Out of [name_u]Oliver[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], my favourite is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I don’t think it’s too posh, actually no name is too posh for my liking. I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] as well. [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] is popular but lovely, and [name_m]William[/name_m] is very nice too.
Thanks I think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is up there for me too. We had decided on it but then thought maybe I need to reconsider. I love the nickname option of [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and of course [name_u]Theo[/name_u].
Based on this list, I would suggest:
[name_u]George[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_u]Maxwell[/name_u]
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u]
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u]
Thanks! [name_f]My[/name_f] faves off your list are [name_u]George[/name_u] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] but my son is [name_u]George[/name_u] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is my nephew!! Xx
They’re all great names! There’s really no such thing as ‘‘too common’’, it depends on how people see it. But if you live in the UK you will definitely meet a lot of little Olivers.
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] isn’t posh at all, it has a friendly sound! And I love [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
[name_m]Will[/name_m] seems a bit unavoidable with [name_m]William[/name_m], sorry.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is my favourite! It’s definitely back in fashion and nicknames [name_m]Artie[/name_m] and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] are to die for.
What about:
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_u]Jasper[/name_u]
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_m]Leon[/name_m]
[name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_u]Percy[/name_u]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_u]Toby[/name_u]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
All four are lovely names, and some of my favorites, as well! I think it might be smart to figure out your top priorities in a name and then rank your choices accordingly.
For example, how important is popularity?
You’re right that [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] is fairly ubiquitous, as is [name_m]William[/name_m], but maybe this isn’t as important as other qualities.
How important are nicknames?
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is almost certain to garner a nickname, whereas [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is fairly nickname-proof.
How important is trendiness?
All of these names are classic, and all are popular, but personally I think [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] feel the most “current.” [name_m]William[/name_m] is a true classic, with widespread use every single year, and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] still feels like a dusty revival on a bit of an upswing.
How important is sibling cohesion?
All of these would be lovely next to big brother [name_u]George[/name_u]. But [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] shares the “eo” – is it cute or too matchy? Is [name_m]William[/name_m] next to [name_u]George[/name_u] too royal for you?
Favorite to Least:
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]- I adore this name, works in any age
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]- not posh, I can see this on anyone
[name_u]Oliver[/name_u]- definitely common but is still a solid name
[name_m]William[/name_m]- NN [name_m]Will[/name_m], [name_u]Liam[/name_u], [name_u]Billy[/name_u]
Oliver-So cute & friendly & charming. It is way popular if that bothers you.
Theodore-I don’t think it’s posh. It sounds a little more geeky to me, but in a cute way. It’s getting popular too if that bothers you. I like the nns [name_u]Theo[/name_u] & [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], but if you want to spice it up a little there’s always [name_m]Thatch[/name_m], Thax, [name_m]Tad[/name_m] or [name_m]Thad[/name_m].
William-Also very popular, & I think a lot go by [name_m]Will[/name_m]. I’m not a fan of [name_m]Will[/name_m] either. I think that [name_u]Billy[/name_u] is adorable, but [name_m]Bill[/name_m] is blah. Not sure how unavoidable these nns are.
Arthur-Nah, old man names are all the rage. It’s adorable.
They’re all my favorite! I may like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] best (it’s my sweet little nephew’s name), but close call.
A few more that are similar but maybe not too terribly over done…
Two of my sons are named [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]😊
Names I think have the same “feel” are:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_u]Maxwell[/name_u]
[name_m]Watson[/name_m]
[name_m]Nelson[/name_m]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
Thank you all for such wonderful detailed replies. This has been incredibly helpful. I think it is probably between [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]. [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] has always appealed to me even throughout childhood, because it was a popular name then too. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] has such a wonderful meaning as gift from god and this child is truly a gift. However, my main reservation on it is that looking at the stats on it in the UK from 2019, it increased 120 places in the past 10 years. Does that make it something was will come and go out of fashion or is it a solid traditional name? I like names that are going to be around a long time and not a fast fashion name. I know the standalone name ‘[name_u]Theo[/name_u]’ has been popular for longer but I really prefer the full name of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].
Oliver - I think it is a bit too popular and a bit lacklustre, but it is a stableand sturdy name
Theodore - not too posh at all. Elegant, handsome and full of great nn potential!
William - I’ve known serveral [name_m]Williams[/name_m] who never use a nickname! I don’t think [name_m]Will[/name_m] is inevitable but it’s worth considering the fact he might decide he likes it. [name_u]Liam[/name_u], [name_m]Wilkie[/name_m] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u] could be other nn
Arthur- love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. Classic and cool but also versatile and sweet.
Oscar, [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] might be other options
