My wife and I are having a difficult time coming up with a name we both like for our son (due in Aug). She wants a classic name like [name]William[/name] or [name]Maxwell[/name], whereas I want something more modern like [name]Aiden[/name] or [name]Chase[/name]. We are getting nowhere fast. Any suggestions?
Here are some names that might help bridge the gap:
[name]Everett[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Alaric[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Thatcher[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name]
[name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Donovan[/name]
[name]Ian[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Findley[/name]
[name]Cooper[/name]
[name]Damian[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Deacon[/name]
[name]Archer[/name]
[name]Jack[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Carsten[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Ronan[/name]
Suggestion: don’t name him [name]Aiden[/name].
What about a classic name with a more modern nickname? Or vice versa. Like:
[name]William[/name] nn [name]Liam[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] nn [name]Red[/name]
[name]Michael[/name] nn [name]Mac[/name]/[name]Mick[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] nn [name]Rocky[/name]/[name]Rocco[/name]*
[name]Thomas[/name] nn [name]Ace[/name]*
[name]Angus[/name] nn [name]Ace[/name]
[name]Maddox[/name] nn [name]Max[/name]
[name]Willis[/name] nn [name]Will[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] nn [name]Dash[/name]
[name]Lincoln[/name] nn [name]Link[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name] nn [name]Van[/name]/[name]Sully[/name]
[name]Griffin[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]
Some of those are more of a compromise between classic and modern instead of using one as the full name and one as the nickname. I really like the idea of [name]Ace[/name] as a nickname, since it’s uncommon and similar in sound to both [name]Aiden[/name] and [name]Chase[/name]. It’s a stretch as a nickname for [name]Thomas[/name], but it could work. Anything that starts with an A, like [name]Anthony[/name] or [name]Archer[/name] would work too.
I have to say I’m with her on [name]Chase[/name] and [name]Aiden[/name], but I totally sympathise with your dilemma - I am like both of you in one person. I love the sound and poise and class of the classic names, but so many of them are so overused they seem a bit boring.
I’d suggest you look up ‘hipster’, ‘vintage’ and ‘classic’ names and try and find something that sounds fresh to you but classic to her.
And then come back here and tell me that name because I want it too!
Some other ideas that haven’t been mentioned yet:
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Lucian[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name]
[name]Rory[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name]
What about [name]Charles[/name] nn [name]Chase[/name]?
I love [name]Silas[/name] it is a classic but sounds cool. Pls dont name him [name]Aiden[/name] there are way too many of them.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! We both like [name]Finn[/name], but our last name starts with Ph, so it’s probably too much. The search continues.
What about [name]Grant[/name]?
I agree with your wife on this one - [name]Aiden[/name] and [name]Chase[/name] are a no go. sorry.
BUT I think you’ve gotten some great suggestions thus far!
Here are some names that have a classic feel that your wife might like, but also a modern and/or edgy feel that you may appreciate.

I like your wifes taste best because they age well, are timeless classic and cute all the boys life. Whereas [name]Aiden[/name] and [name]Chase[/name] on a man really? I just don’t find these names attractive and everybody is using them so they are a bit boring. What about Newer names that are classics? Like:
[name]William[/name] (your wife has) with a modern nn like [name]Liam[/name].
[name]Maxwell[/name] nn [name]Max[/name]

The important thing is that you both love the name if you aren’t finding names you both like (to match a style you both later love) its not fair to either of you.
Thanks again for all of the suggestions. We have managed to narrow down our list to these 6 names:
[name]Harrison[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Brennan[/name], [name]Maxwell[/name], [name]Dexter[/name], & [name]Camden[/name]
What’s your favourite?
I love the name [name]Dexter[/name]…my husband absolutely hates it, and I do mean hates. But I say [name]Dexter[/name] nn [name]Dex[/name]. Best of both worlds.
I vote for [name]Maxwell[/name]!
Oooo I like all of those! My favs are probably [name]Harrison[/name] or [name]Dexter[/name] though. [name]Do[/name] you have a middle name picked out? I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those names! Except maybe [name]Camden[/name] which sounds a little trendy to me, but I like the sound of it and I can totally see why you’d like it! Oh and one other thing, if you choose [name]Maxwell[/name], bare in mind there are a lot of [name]Max[/name]'s around at the moment.
Best of luck!
