Trendiest Untrendy Names!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!!

I hope you’re having a good day, and if not, that things feel easier soon

On this week’s blog, [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] (@Kipperbo1) has been looking at the Trendiest Untrendy Names - names that don’t fit the current name trends, but are on the rise (albeit in a small way). From clunky names to extravagant ones, from unique nicknames to names from around the world, they all sit outside of the US Top 1000.

A couple of questions - as ever, only answer the ones you wish to!

  • Which of the names are your favourite? Either individually, or as a category!
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] any surprise you? [name_m]Or[/name_m] do any stand out as totally making sense why they’re on the rise?
  • Are there any other names you’d add to any of the groups?
And, because this is Nameberry, a little naming challenge if you want it!

If you had to name three children from your favourite set of Trendy-Untrendy names, which three would you pick and what middle name/s would you give them?

Thanks for taking part

I’m going to have to pick a few from each category because I like them all in their own way

I said 'a few' but I lied so it will have to go under here

[name_f]Honora[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Opaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Ornella[/name_f]
[name_m]Beowulf[/name_m]
Baranbas
[name_m]Elysian[/name_m]
[name_m]Montague[/name_m]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]
[name_f]Coumba[/name_f]
[name_f]Musfirah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ignacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sigourney[/name_f]
[name_m]Fergus[/name_m]
[name_m]Silvestro[/name_m]
[name_m]Zigmund[/name_m]
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f]
[name_f]Enid[/name_f]
[name_f]Freda[/name_f]
[name_f]Thomasin[/name_f]
[name_m]Merle[/name_m]
[name_m]Whittaker[/name_m]
[name_m]Bertie[/name_m]
[name_f]Francie[/name_f]
[name_m]Jacky[/name_m]
[name_f]Mitzi[/name_f]
[name_m]Reggie[/name_m]
[name_f]Peggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Tzippy[/name_f]
[name_m]Nils[/name_m]
[name_m]Witt[/name_m]
[name_m]Mory[/name_m]
[name_f]Vinnie[/name_f]
[name_m]Sully[/name_m]
[name_m]Jess[/name_m]

I think a lot ‘make sense’ - as in, I’ve encountered some of these or similar on the forums and irl - and because some are familiar where I am or have pop culture associations - but there are definitely some I’m surprised to see rising:

[name_f]Josie[/name_f] (b)
[name_m]Butch[/name_m]
[name_m]Jep[/name_m]
[name_f]Baby[/name_f] (although I have encountered one…)
[name_m]Chris[/name_m]
[name_m]Urias[/name_m]
[name_m]Randolph[/name_m]
[name_f]Oralia[/name_f]
[name_m]Philemon[/name_m]

I’ll do two for each (that could join the lists in the future)

Extravagant names: [name_f]Saturnina[/name_f] and [name_m]Benvolio[/name_m]
Distinctly international: [name_f]Remedios[/name_f] and [name_m]Artan[/name_m]
Croc names: [name_f]Doris[/name_f] and [name_m]Hubert[/name_m]
Unexpected nicknames: [name_f]Deenie[/name_f] and [name_m]Nai[/name_m] (okay, it’s wishful thinking)

I'd choose...

[name_f]Mitzi[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_m]Kipp[/name_m] [name_m]Leander[/name_m]
[name_m]Sandy[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]

[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Blanche[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f].
I would probably pick [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f] [name_f]Enid[/name_f] as combo
also love [name_m]Florian[/name_m], [name_m]Montague[/name_m], [name_m]Igor[/name_m] and [name_m]Alvis[/name_m].
I would probably pick [name_m]Alvis[/name_m] [name_m]Florian[/name_m]

Suddenly obsessed with the idea of “Croc Names” :joy::crocodile:

What a treasure trove!

I love so many of them, but I think my favourites would be:

[name_f]Florentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Henriette[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Ornella[/name_f]
[name_m]Alpheus[/name_m]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_f]Sigourney[/name_f]
[name_m]Siegfried[/name_m]
[name_m]Silvestre[/name_m]
[name_f]Blanche[/name_f]
[name_m]Merle[/name_m]
[name_f]Peggy[/name_f]
[name_f]Mitzi[/name_f]

Besides Baby(!), I was sort of surprised by the alternate spellings of decidedly vintage names (such as [name_m]Lelend[/name_m] rather than [name_m]Leland[/name_m], [name_m]Wendall[/name_m] rather than [name_m]Wendell[/name_m] etc.) as I usually only see those on misspelled census records.

@Demoiselle I also found that really interesting! Others that fall under that category that didn’t make the blog were Pricilla, Klaudia, Harriett, Grethel, Willemina, Enock, and Lyonel

@Sorceress [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f] [name_f]Enid[/name_f] is stunning! And [name_m]Alvis[/name_m] [name_m]Florian[/name_m] is so melodic!

@Demoiselle it is a fabulous list, right!
I also kind of hate that I’ve encountered a real life chid called Baby…
But that’s an interesting point about the spelling - I wonder if some of it is them being spelled as they’re said? [name_m]Wendall[/name_m] to avoid wen-DELL, [name_f]Marien[/name_f] to avoid Mari-ANN? [name_m]Or[/name_m] just in the spirit of alternative spellings?

For girls, my favorites are [name_f]Corinthia[/name_f], [name_f]Fauna[/name_f], [name_f]Floriana[/name_f], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Lucilla[/name_f], and [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f]. For boys, [name_m]Elysian[/name_m], [name_m]Florian[/name_m], [name_f]Josie[/name_f], [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m], and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m].

I was surprised to see [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] described as so-uncool-it’s-cool and clunky! Especially due to all the ties it has, as a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] goddess, a [name_f]Disney[/name_f] character, having a nature meaning, and having a light and flowy sound that ends in -a, I feel like it checks all the boxes to not be uncool and clunky but hey, what do I know :woman_shrugging:

My trendy-untrendy family would be called:

Extravagant

Lucilla Hyacinth
Florian Barnabus & Isidore Montague
Wisteria Henriette
lucie, florrie, issie, & wistie

International

Konstantina Verenice & Silvestre Fidencio
stansi & silvestre

Croc Names

Magda Thomasin
Enid Beulah
Rupert Seymour
mags, enid, & rue

Nicknames

Peggy Sue
Kipp Arnie

peg & kip

Ooh this is fun! Thanks for posting it because I never would have seen this article otherwise and I think the concept is so interesting.

Favorites - [name_f]Delphina[/name_f], [name_f]Henriette[/name_f], [name_f]Lucilla[/name_f], [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f], [name_m]Aureliano[/name_m], [name_m]Montague[/name_m], [name_m]Alvis[/name_m], [name_m]Elroy[/name_m], [name_m]Leland[/name_m], [name_m]Whittaker[/name_m], [name_f]Lynnie[/name_f], VInnie

Surprises - a lot of the boy names surprise me. I feel like I see a lot more variation among girl names at least in real life and a lot of the boy names feel like they don’t veer off the top names as often. Names like [name_m]Beowulf[/name_m], [name_m]Virgilio[/name_m], [name_m]Merle[/name_m] really stand out to me because I’d be very surprised to meet a child named that in real life.

Any names I’d add - A lot of the nickname ones on the bottom section feel familiar to me. I could see [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Lennie[/name_f], Pipper, [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m], [name_m]Van[/name_m], and [name_f]Calli[/name_f] added to the list.

Hmm for the kids I would say Henreitte [name_f]Lenore[/name_f], [name_f]Delphina[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], and [name_m]Leland[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]

@babynames17 that’s a good point about [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] - I love to hear how differently everyone perceives names! I can kind of see it from both sides - it is nature-y, [name_f]Bambi[/name_f], woodsy, wordy vibes, but then, it also strikes me as scientific, more like words such as median, trophic and xylem. And sound wise, I can see what you mean - a bit like [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f] - but at the same time, that [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] sound reminds me of [name_f]Lorna[/name_f], [name_f]Maura[/name_f], [name_f]Erma[/name_f], or words like horn, corn, mourn.

I now have some very divided feelings about [name_f]Fauna[/name_f]

@OctaviaMay

[name_m]Loving[/name_m] these sets! Your extravagant combos are dreamy - [name_m]Florian[/name_m] [name_m]Barnabus[/name_m] and [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] [name_m]Montague[/name_m] :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: and nickname Wistie is so cute!

[name_f]Konstantina[/name_f] [name_f]Verenice[/name_f] and [name_m]Silvestre[/name_m] [name_m]Fidencio[/name_m] are magical!

Your crocs names are so perfectly clunky! And the nicknames are on point! [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and Mags!!

[name_f]Peggy[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] and [name_m]Kipp[/name_m] [name_m]Arnie[/name_m] have charm!

@AmyVermeersch

definitely! People sometimes seem more willing to take risks with girls names!

I could see [name_m]Van[/name_m] and [name_f]Lennie[/name_f] on the list too!

[name_f]Henriette[/name_f] [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] is lovely - and [name_f]Delphina[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is so elegant!
