Turkish baby boy name ideas in US

Hello,

We are expecting a baby boy in Feb 7 and still looking for a name. We are both Turkish and want Turkish name. My wife likes Batu which means strong. What do you think about Batu or is there any Turkish boy name you think cool?

Many thanks!

Volkan

Batu is okay. It has a strong, solid sound.

Some Turkish names that work well in the US

Aslan
Erol
[name_m]Kadir[/name_m]
[name_f]Mert[/name_f]
[name_m]Mustafa[/name_m]
Remzi
[name_u]Sami[/name_u]
[name_m]Tarik[/name_m]

I think these are some names that could work in the US as far as straight forward pronunciation, etc.

[name_m]Adem[/name_m]
[name_m]Zeki[/name_m]
[name_m]Hakan[/name_m]
Aslan
[name_m]Senan[/name_m]
[name_u]Aydin[/name_u]
[name_m]Ramy[/name_m]

Evren? There are quite a few Turkish names that work well in the States. I like Batu.

I’ve never heard of Batu, but it sounds adorable if I am pronouncing it right . I’m sure I know 1 or 2 Turkish names at least, the problem is I dont know what they are

I think Batu is lovely, it sounds familiar, the pronunciation isn’t hard and the sound is sweet.
My favourite Turkish boys’ name, though a very big gulity pleasure one, is Aslan meaning [name_m]Lion[/name_m].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]. My sons half Turkish. We have named him Alper. I like the name Batu however in [name_f]England[/name_f] the word Batty is used to mean mad or gay - I don’t know if it’s the same in American English though but if it is it might be something to consider. We considered the names Timur, [name_f]Eren[/name_f] and Emre for our son and we also liked [name_m]Kenan[/name_m], [name_f]Arda[/name_f] and [name_m]Adem[/name_m] but they were both in use by close relatives. I also like the name Onur but aim not sure if [name_f]Honour[/name_f] might be used as a girls name in the US?..

These would work well:

[name_m]Tarik[/name_m]
Alp
Serkan
Aslan

Sorry, I don’t know that many Turkish names. I would just suggest you don’t choose one in which the letters are pronounced differently than they are in English. For example, Sevket. The “S” sound is different in English so people wouldn’t know to pronounce it “Shevket”. Also anything with C, like Necip, because people here will not pronounce it the way it’s supposed to be pronounced.

I think Batu is fine. He might occasionally get people calling him [name_m]Bat[/name_m] or on the up-side, Batman! :stuck_out_tongue:

I love the suggestion of [name_m]Tarik[/name_m]. It sounds very masculine.

Hello everyone,

My Turkish husband and I have been married for 3.5 years and we are expecting our first little boy! We are very excited and love him so much already, but my husband and I can’t seem to agree on a name for him. My husband absolutely insists that he has a Turkish or Arabic first name that he would actually go by, whereas I am adamant that it should be something that is easy to read and pronounce in English (therefore, no ç, ı, ğ, ö, ş, ü) AND will not offend/upset my conservative [name_m]Christian[/name_m] rooted family.

As of right now, the name that I truly [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] is Emre (it means “friend”)! There is something about it that already fits my little boy’s personality. I told my family that we were considering Emre, and I was shocked because they all LOVED the name! Granted, they pronounced it the way that Americans pronounce the name [name_u]Emory[/name_u], but hey, close enough and everyone was happy.

However, my husband still wants to look and see if we can find any other names. I can’t imagine loving a name for my little guy more than Emre, but I’m TRYING to keep an open mind. I know that my own family, or myself for that matter, would NOT like or appreciate traditional names like [name_m]Osman[/name_m], [name_m]Omer[/name_m], [name_m]Ahmet[/name_m], [name_m]Hakan[/name_m], Emir, [name_m]Yusuf[/name_m], etc. I did try to come up with a list of possible “if I have to” names.

[name_f]Eren[/name_f] (means “holy” but I am worried that people will think that its a different spelling of the girl name [name_f]Erin[/name_f])
[name_u]Sami[/name_u] (meaning: “exalted”) I know that this is a lovely name, but its just not “clicking” for my little boy
[name_m]Berk[/name_m] (meaning: “man of strength”)

If you have any more ideas for Turkish OR [name_m]EVEN[/name_m] ARABIC names that would satisfy a very traditional Turkish family and sound like they could also work for a picky, conservative American family, please leave me as many suggestions as you can!

Thank you all

I’m not familiar with many Turkish names. But my favorite, by far, is Evren. I think it is easy to pronounce and fits with current naming trends. What about [name_m]Malik[/name_m] or Melik and [name_m]Tarik[/name_m] or [name_m]Tarek[/name_m]. I love them both and I think they work great in English with the exotic charm. I have a very christian friend who’s son is [name_m]Malik[/name_m] and there’s no arab background.
