I think my tastes in girls names is gradually shifting. I’ve always always been a lover of longer, somewhat frilly names like Delilah, Isadora, Genevieve etc, with cutesy nicknames.
But recently, with the thought of an actual real life human (!) ive started to be drawn towards shorter, sleeker names! My current crushes are Twila (Twyla?), Posy and Marnie- what do you think of these names? They are totally left field for me so would love to hear any thoughts!
Also do you personally prefer long and frilly, or short and sweet? Either way, I know vintage is my taste but seems like the type of names I’m drawn to are changing!
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] - reminds me of tawny and twilight, has a magical feel. I really like the long i sound.
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - very feminine but that is offset by the brevity, I think. I have a good association via the nostalgia of the character in [name_m]Noel[/name_m] Streatfeild’s book Ballet Shoes.
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] - I think this is pretty much the perfect name!
I adore short and sweet names, I called my son [name_m]Beck[/name_m] for example (full name). I live in the UK where “nickname names” are used as is and that’s completely normalised. Having said that, my favourite would-actually-use girl name is [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] and after 4 years on Nameberry I’ve been influenced by the longer-name-for-the-birth-certificate concept and the advantage that has of bestowing More Name and many nn options! I really like the idea of [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] with nn [name_f]Marnie[/name_f]. This is all for fun for me now, as I won’t be having any more children.
I love the idea of: [name_f]Twila[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Posy[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] BTW!
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is one of my favorite names of all time! I would absolutely use [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] for a daughter.
I don’t love [name_f]Posy[/name_f].
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] is cute, but I prefer the [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] spelling. I don’t think I’d personally use either.
Overall, i usually lean towards longer names with shorter nicknames.
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] is very pretty and I like the fun vintage feel of [name_f]Marnie[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as a nickname but don’t feel that it ages super well as a full name.
I personally lean towards longer names because I’m a huge fan of strong, classic/vintage full names with cute and quirky nicknames but I do see the appeal of zippy short names. A few that feel like they could be your thing are: [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Ruby[/name_f], [name_f]Darla[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], and [name_f]Sally[/name_f].
I adore [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], it’s definitely among my favourite names. [name_f]Posy[/name_f] is cute, but I do prefer it as a nickname. [name_f]Twila[/name_f] / [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] feels interesting somehow, not exactly my cup of tea but I could see it growing on me.
And I don’t have much of a preference, my style is definitely vintage/old-fashioned but the length can be anything from 2 to 12+ letters.
I am experiencing the same exact thing! I LOVE both long and frilly and short and sweet, and its hard to match my names up as siblings!
Twila/Twyla is lovely!
I always thought of [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as really cutesy and I think its so sweet!
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is sweet and soft to me.
I also find myself torn between short and sweet and long and whimsical and I personally like to split the difference by having a long name with a short, sweet nickname, ie. [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] called “Posy”. I think long names have the benefit of a lot of flexibility (Persephone could also be Persie or [name_f]Effie[/name_f] or Pepper) and presence, but short names can be so elegant and simple, and are much easier to wear as a kid on role call day. They also are a lot less likely to accrue unwanted nicknames. So there’s good reasons for both choices.
As for the three you’ve listed, I love them all and get slightly different vibes for each:
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] absolute favourite. I think [name_f]Twila[/name_f] is so underused and glittery and gorgeous. The -ila ending makes it feel familiar and feminine, but there are so few names starting with Tw. [name_f]Twila[/name_f] feels fresh and unique to me and also totally feminine and energetic. [name_m]Perfect[/name_m].
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - So gentle and sweet, kind of feels like the energy of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] distilled into a single micro name. It’s also a little antique in my mind, like a porcelain doll or a garden party. [name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation is that [name_f]Posy[/name_f] does feel the most nickname-y of the choices and my instinct is to use a longer name and have [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as the short form. There’s nothing wrong with just [name_f]Posy[/name_f] either, though.
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] - [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] feels the farthest from your typical style. It’s a bit retro and very unfrilly, feeling almost like a surname or nickname name. But [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is also definitely feminine, sweet, and warm. It’s a good blend of playful but still capable of growing up with a child. I think it’s a great name that I’m happy to see used, but I do wonder if you might wish you’d gone with something more in line with your other choices.
Thank you for your thoughts!! [name_m]Super[/name_m] interesting point about [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], and something to mull over! I hadn’t really considered [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] to be significantly different from [name_f]Twila[/name_f] or [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as I don’t see any of them as overly frilly (for me I tend to think of only longer names as frilly) but I can now totally see what you mean!
My favorite of your new names is Twila. Love Twila 🪻
As for whether I prefer long frilly names or shorter names… that really depends on the individual names. One thing I really like is mixing them - Twila Genevieve would be a really pretty combo.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MARNIE! I tried to convince my husband to name all of our daughters [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] at one point or another! (He never agreed, sigh:face_exhaling:) [name_f]Twila[/name_f] is not my cup of tea, though I do know someone who named her daughter [name_f]Twila[/name_f], but changed it within 2 months of her daughter’s birth. If I were going to go with the name [name_f]Twila[/name_f] I would spell it [name_f]Twyla[/name_f], it seems nicer to me in that way. It’s a lovely name and if you love it, go for it and don’t listen to anyone else. As for [name_f]Posy[/name_f], it almost seems too nicknamey for my tastes. I would spell it [name_f]Posie[/name_f], which I feel would make it less nicknamey. Again, these names are all beautiful, but they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. If you and your partner love them, I say go for it! Congratulations on your little one, wishing you a smooth and safe delivery! [name_m]God[/name_m] bless you and I hope you find that perfect name. Don’t worry, you’ll know when you have it!
I think you can love multiple styles of names? Maybe it’s just me, but my tastes feel very eclectic and mismatched, I think you could easily use [name_f]Posy[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] etc. I love long names like [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] with oodles of nicknames but I also love spunky and short names like [name_f]Posy[/name_f]!
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] - super lovely name, reminds me of twilight at summer. Does feel a little dated to me, it’s rare enough that it probably isn’t, but there was a singer named [name_f]Twila[/name_f] [name_m]Paris[/name_m] I grew up listening to, so I feel like she feels tied to the 70s-90s haha. I could see her being used now, though! I know a girl (probably late teens now?) named [name_f]Twila[/name_f] and I always was a big fan of hers, very gifted musically and athletically and her family is so sweet.
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - LONG been a fan of [name_f]Posy[/name_f], I love this name so so much. Never really committed to it because I felt it needed a longer name and I can’t see myself using [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or Mariposa… but I can see her on her own now and would love to meet a little [name_f]Posy[/name_f]!
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] - eh, sorry, never really saw the appeal. Feels a lot like [name_f]Maud[/name_f] to me - a little dusty and full of cobwebs and old lady - but [name_f]Maud[/name_f] feels a little fresher. I like [name_f]Marina[/name_f] and [name_f]Maud[/name_f] much more, myself, but she is well liked on her, so I’m probably just the odd one out!
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] are definitely my favorites of your favorites
I personally love the short and sweet names, so these are 100% my style! I can’t really get behind names like [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] for my own kiddo, almost all the names I love are 2 syllables. I love them for others but not for me, so I’m with you!
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] is absolutely amazing. I like the [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] spelling more, but it’s so cute and interesting without seeming like it’s trying too hard. It’s effortlessly cool and I could see it working on so many personalities. Plus I think it would age really well.
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] is adorable, although I do have some concerns about how it would age. It’s my least favorite of the three but I do like it a lot.
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] is the ultimate cool girl in my opinion. I really like the vibe, from the way it sounds to the way it looks. Huge fan!
