"Ugly" Names

Yesterday, I saw the film The Help, and in it, there is a character named [name]Eugenia[/name]. Perhaps I am swayed by the fact that the name is attached to [name]Emma[/name] [name]Stone[/name]'s lovely face, but I found myself really liking the prospect. [name]Eugenia[/name] is colorful and quite pretty in its supposed “ugliness.” Or am I crazy? And then I found myself thinking of other “ugly” names that I like, such as:

[name]Eulalia[/name]
[name]Myrtle[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Winifred[/name]
[name]Maxine[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Eudora[/name]

What are some names that you like that are widely considered ugly, even on Nameberry?

I think [name]Hazel[/name] is pretty but a lot of people I know hate it. They say it is too old-lady but it makes me think of the color hazel, which I think is very pretty.

[name]Beulah[/name]! I think it’s beautiful, but I am in the minority.

I love “vintage” names but [name]Beulah[/name], [name]Bertha[/name], [name]Beryl[/name], [name]Gladys[/name] and [name]Mildred[/name] are some names I’m not fond of because of the way they sound.

I think [name]Ursula[/name], [name]Ursuline[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Roberta[/name] are really pretty! I also like [name]Gordon[/name], [name]Edgar[/name], [name]Grover[/name], [name]Howard[/name], [name]Walter[/name], and [name]Wilbur[/name] for boys and those are still pretty much unheard these days.

[name]Gertrude[/name]! I don’t mind it because of [name]Drew[/name] Barrymore’s character [name]Gerty[/name] on E.T.
and [name]Rita[/name], I like because it is my grandmothers name.

Out of your list, I think [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] are beautiful.

I agree that [name]Emma[/name] [name]Stone[/name] can make any name beautiful

[name]Hazel[/name] is my favorite name ever! I also adore [name]Matilda[/name]. However, I feel like those two names are quite hipster and popular on Nameberry now.

I also think [name]Esther[/name] is lovely.

[name]Eulalia[/name]; I love this name.
[name]Myrtle[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Winifred[/name]; definitely. If my father had been a girl, he was to be [name]Winifred[/name].
[name]Maxine[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name]
[name]Demelza[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name]; love [name]Agnes[/name].
[name]Mabel[/name]; I prefer [name]Amabel[/name], which is even older.
[name]Beatrice[/name]; always loved [name]Beatrice[/name].
[name]Eudora[/name]; again, a wonderful name.

[name]Mildred[/name], [name]Berte[/name], [name]Beryl[/name], [name]Gerd[/name], [name]Helen[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Louisa[/name] are all names I love and are all family names in one form or another. I also love [name]Waldo[/name], [name]Bertram[/name], [name]Wilfred[/name], [name]Humphrey[/name], and [name]Mervyn[/name].

I’ve always had a soft spot for [name]Eugenia[/name]! I think [name]Eugenie[/name] is lovely, as well. I also love [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name] (ESPECIALLY [name]Agnes[/name]!) from the names you listed–[name]Agnes[/name] would probably be a consideration on my short list if I thought my poor daughter would be tormented because of it. I love the French pronunciation (ahn-YESS), too.

I also love [name]Ursula[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Ethel[/name] (yes, I loved [name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name]'s daughter’s name!), [name]Opal[/name], [name]Helen[/name], [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Olive[/name], [name]Betty[/name]. Some of them are [name]Berry[/name] favorites but others don’t quite seem wearable anywhere ([name]Ursula[/name]!). I would love to see any of them used, though!

I know a girl named [name]Ursula[/name] at my school!

I love pretty much every name that’s been listed on this thread. [name]Ursula[/name], [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Prudence[/name], [name]Gertrude[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Hilda[/name], [name]Sybil[/name], [name]Winifred[/name], [name]Myrna[/name], and [name]Lorna[/name] are all names I’ve been told I’m crazy for liking.

[name]Ursula[/name] is my current front runner for our next daughter! I love e idea of using [name]Lala[/name] or [name]Sully[/name] as nicknames when she’s young, you know, to give her time to grow into all the name that is [name]Ursula[/name]!

I like [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Winifred[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name].
Also [name]Edith[/name], [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Astrid[/name], [name]Drusilla[/name] and [name]Millicent[/name]. I’m sure there are more, but I just can’t think of them right now.

Also [name]Sybil[/name], [name]Hazel[/name] (though I don’t consider it to be anywhere near ugly), [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Opal[/name], [name]Olive[/name], [name]Mildred[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Rita[/name], [name]Edgar[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] out of the other names listed.
Also, most people seem to hate [name]Ignatius[/name], but I love it!

Dude whaaaaaaaaat? [name]Eulalia[/name] is like, 2nd on my list for “prettiest name ever”! Granted, pronouncing it like this makes a big difference:

I love [name]Eugenia[/name], too, but in Spanish.

[name]Agatha[/name] doesn’t get much love, but I adore it. I also actually really like [name]Gladys[/name]… especially the look of it.
[name]Opal[/name] is one of my favourites, and I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Alba[/name] though most seem to think it’s very unattractive.

[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]
[name_f]Helga[/name_f]
[name_f]Hildegard[/name_f]
[name_f]Griselda[/name_f] (in my opinion, the worst)
Bruhilda

[name_f]Eugenia[/name_f] is so not ugly! I think of [name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] Bouchard

I love the name [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] or [name_f]Trudy[/name_f] are ridiculously cute nicknames and [name_f]Gerta[/name_f] is very elegant. It also has a special meaning because it was my grandmother’s name. However, everyone (including my husband) thinks it is ugly. I am so tempted to just go with it but I don’t want my daughter to have a name she is embarrassed by. I think I am going to go with my great-grandmother’s name, [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], instead…

[name_f]Hortense[/name_f] and [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] (and [name_f]Edwige[/name_f], [name_f]Edwidge[/name_f]) seem to be widely hated, but I love them. I had a 2nd great aunt [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. She was very dear to my 2nd great grandmother and great-grandmother. I would love to use [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] or any of its variations (particularly [name_f]Edwidge[/name_f] as I am in love with [name_f]Edwidge[/name_f] Danticat), but DH will not be swayed. It’s just too hard a sell, even after [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].

One that I think is just UGLY from every angle… [name_f]Barbara[/name_f]. It’s not as old (in terms of the height of its popularity) as a lot of the other “ugly names” that we namenerds often vie for (I am a fan of [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], and many others mentioned here like [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f]). But [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], as a mid-century “ugly name,” just still gets at me like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t understand how it manages to cling to the top 1000.

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] (my aunts name), [name_f]Ulrike[/name_f] (my late aunts name), [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] (my late [name_f]Oma[/name_f]'s name), [name_m]Eberhard[/name_m] (my late Opa’s name). I love all these names but would never use them.
