UK perspective needed- Freya

[name]Freya[/name] is quite high on the list of girl names that DH and I both agree on. However, I was reading in the Nameberry blog today where one of the commenters said that it’s “not posh” in the UK. [name]How[/name] is it viewed there? Is it a trendy name, like perhaps comparable to [name]Chloe[/name]? Or is it viewed as a teen mom/trashy/chav name, like, say, [name]Nevaeh[/name]?

We live in [name]Canada[/name] but just wanting to know how it is perceived elsewhere.

That might’ve been me :stuck_out_tongue: [name]Don[/name]'t get me wrong -I like the name [name]Freya[/name]- I just wanted to point out that (to many Brits, I believe) it doesn’t sound like a distinctly posh, upper class kind of name. Another poster hit the nail on the head: there are some names very popular in the UK that are unheard of in the US/[name]Canada[/name] so they may sound more posh to you guys, if that makes sense?

As for how it’s viewed- it’s certainly not trashy! I think of it as a decent, fresh, pretty name. As it’s at about #20 and it’s been rising steadily over several years I would say it is trendy, though not as trendy as maybe [name]Isla[/name] or [name]Ava[/name] which have really shot up. Obviously that’s relative to the UK. I don’t know what that’s comparable to in Canadian statistics.

Overall I reckon it’s a sound choice. [name]Freya[/name]'s a lovely name

Yeah, I always used to like [name]Freja[/name] as a name but it’s just SO popular now that it feels like [name]Isabella[/name] to me - still a nice name just oh so boring.

Regarding class, I have a feeling that in the eighties and nineties it might have been thought of as a ‘posh’ name but since then the general populace got wind of it and it’s just soared in popularity. It’s definitely common now but not chavvy.

It’s not upper class, but not chavvy at all. It’s just popular! I’d say the little [name]Freya[/name]'s I see around are middle class girls.

Ok, good to know! Common doesn’t bother me but chavvy does, so we are good! I already have a [name]Gareth[/name] so we tend to like names that are normal/common in the UK but almost unheard of here.

I grew up in [name]London[/name] and [name]Freya[/name]'s not posh at all, just fairly common where I’m from. I know probably half a dozen Freyas, 20 down to about 5, and none of them are what I’d call posh. Working/middle class, I don’t find it chavvy at all. Boyfriend’s from a much less ethnically diverse town and finds [name]Freya[/name] a bit of a foreign name, [name]German[/name] I think he said it sounded. I find [name]Freya[/name] a bit trendy, as I’ve never met or heard of any older than 20, and I have a bit of a bad association with the name due to a girl I went to school with named it. But I think [name]Gareth[/name] and [name]Freya[/name] would go lovely together.

I left [name]London[/name] five years ago for Australia and I think of [name]Freya[/name] as uppermiddle class, like [name]India[/name] or [name]Flora[/name] but I’m probably behind the times!

It was in the 70’s/80’s, not anymore. I went to school with a few.

was quite popular a little while ago i think…

I live in the UK and I don’t consider [name]Freya[/name] ‘chavvy’ at all - just a beautiful name that’s becoming more and more popular, like so many others - bad news for us Nameberries, but good for everyone else!

I’m in the uk and think [name]Freya[/name] is a lovely name, not at all chavvy! 30 years ago it was very uncommon and potentially more ‘posh’, but today it’s very popular and fairly class-less. Sadly for me it’s too common here for me to consider using!
