No kids anytime soon but I’m a writer and have always loved names, both while naming characters and when thinking about future kids. I’ve ALWAYS had trouble with boy names for my own (future) children, simply because I want a unique, uncommon name but also one that won’t seem “sissy” or with any room to get kicked around.
Typically I really like “jock” names. Some I’ve considered are:
[name_u]Rex[/name_u]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m] (but I fear this is too common)
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] (family name, but want a cool, uncommon nn…any ideas?)
I also [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] traditional English names but fear they are [name_m]WAY[/name_m] too common. I wouldn’t want my kid being the 15th [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Harry[/name_m], etc. in the class.
If you’re worried about names being too common, I definitely recommend looking up SSA rankings! You can find them over at Behind the Name, or just by Googling. I’m assuming you’re in the U.S, since you have [name_m]Boston[/name_m] in your username. You’re right that [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is pretty popular right now (#233 last year), but [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is actually all the way down at #717.
[name_m]Tam[/name_m] or [name_m]Tip[/name_m] could be nicknames or [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
[name_m]Crew[/name_m] was the first name to come to mind when I read your post.
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is the patron saint of athletes.
I personally think of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] as more soccer/lacrosse than football/basketball. If you’re looking for a less preppy sport-type name, perhaps something like [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], or [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
If you want something less common than the above, perhaps [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], or [name_m]Otto[/name_m].
I tend to think or [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_m]Hector[/name_m] as fairly sporty masculine names.
Maybe even word/virtue names like [name_m]Valor[/name_m], Nobel, [name_m]Abel[/name_m] would work as well.
Otherwise: [name_m]Chad[/name_m], [name_m]Jason[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], and [name_m]Slater[/name_m] come to mind.
I also like:
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_m]Lance[/name_m]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m] nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Nate[/name_m]/[name_m]Thane[/name_m]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Wes[/name_m]
