I loveeee absolutely truly love unique, made up, rare names!
I have made up a fair few baby names by myself that are unique. I would love to share them… But I’m scared someone will steal them before they are invented xD
So two things you can do on this forum post:
Comment your opinion about that. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you get that feeling too
Post a unique baby name you invented! Also if you would use it/have used it.

I don’t see the point when there are literally thousands of lovely names already out there. However, if you’re going to do it, do it like [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] and use a Latin word as a base e.g [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]. At least then the name has an etymology.
I perhaps get concerned people might take my made up names for fantasy characters though, especially as I’m planning on having this book published.

Madgelain (mad-GEL-ayn) is my favourite I think. But again, these are purely for book characters.
1- I find that people tend to want to stay within boundaries for names-using “unique” names that were bequeathed to thousands of other children that same year.
2- I have used names I made up. On real people. I am complimented often and it means something to me. All names were made up at some point.
[name_f]Maeby[/name_f] is a made up name. Not by me, but by the creator of Arrested Development. [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] + [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] = [name_f]Maeby[/name_f]. Loved it, used it, still love it, and she totally rocks the name. We made up Saela, not really the sound but the spelling for sure. Inspired by a character [name_f]Sela[/name_f] from [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek, my mother’s maiden name [name_u]Saylor[/name_u], and the ae from her sister’s name. Couldn’t imagine her with any other name!
I do love unusual, unique, and made up names, as long as they sound, and look like names to me. There are lots of names invented by authors that are beautiful (ahem, Tolkien), and feel like names to me. Most of the made up names I love aren’t really completely my own invention. Usually they’re inspired by a fictional invented name, but slightly altered, so can’t exactly lay claim to them. I doubt a large or significant amount of people will suddenly use them (even in 10 plus years when I actually have kids), so I’m not too bothered. But I do have that protective feeling over a lot of names, maybe more so with existing names, since it’s more likely people will encounter and use them, and want to stay in their comfort zone.
Anidora (from a book)
Lothira (Variation of Tolkien’s Lothiriel)
Elendra
Endrana
Kiladra (from the same series as Anidora
Saren (from the same series as Anidora, Kiladra)
Isilee (from the same series as Anidora, Kiladra etc.)
Then my own inventions:
Xinnaea (Zin-ay-uh, believe it or not, this is in no way influenced by [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]/[name_f]Linnaea[/name_f] or [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], I was playing around with X and ae).
Monaecia/Monacia (Mon-ay-see-uh)
Xinnaeus (b)
Lakelyn but I did not invent it I just think it’s a pretty cool name! [name_u]Lake[/name_u] + [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] = Lakelyn I just think it’s pretty cool.
What do you think of it? I probably would not use it though.
I know what you’re intending to mean but to me ‘made up’ means on the spot conjoining of completely random sounds and letters with no considered connection to any other word e.g Smathipaynie.
I used [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] before as a good example of an invented name. [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] created it but he did so by developing it from the Latin word mirandus meaning “admirable, wonderful”.
I used to try to make up names but it never turned out to be satisfying to me. I do read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi so I used to like the made up names there. But then it turned out that many of the made-up names were actually real names, just from old Celtic or Nordic or other cultural myths.
Made up names I like:
Atreyu from Neverending [name_u]Story[/name_u].
[name_u]Jace[/name_u] from Mortal Instruments
It depends. I don’t like a made up name for the sole reason that it is made up- sometimes I just like a name, and it turns out to be made up. [name_f]My[/name_f] name, Nooshi, is made up (I think), and I absolutely love my name.
I really enjoy making them up for characters on occasion: Safienne, Fereline, Fenieth, Lumienne, Rowilda, Firentia, Senecia, Vailo, Mamini, etc. I just haven’t really made up a name that I love as much as some of my other names. I quite like Rowilda though (I don’t think I made that one up though).
These aren’t made up, exactly, but to the Western world they’d be pretty rare, and to you guys it might “feel” made up. The correct spelling of these names is in the Thai written language, not the English alphabet. So I’m being creative with spelling. [name_m]Just[/name_m] pronounce them phonetically in English, put the accent on the first or second syllable. There’s no point in me trying to depict how Thai sounds. Enjoy!

Names I made up
I had my own thread about this, but no one replied!
I am a bit of writer. I wouldn’t use these in real life.
If you have heard any of these elsewhere, let me know and I’ll remove them.
Please tell me what you think! I would love a PM or reply.
And yeah, some are bad because I made them up when I was younger.
I see no problem in using a made-up name in general though. All names were made up at some point.
Most are for girls because girl names just interest me more.
I don’t dislike ’ made up ’ names…there are levels though… Made up like changed the spelling, like changed a letter or added one so the sound is different, made up like combined elements, like derived from words… Root sources, taken bits of various names and thrown them together… Some of these ways are to me better than others but its case by case. For myself, personally I prefer for my use names that really mean something and who’s history’s are clear, underused classics basically but I’m interested to see what people say here. I’ve met a number of children with names with letters added lately and I’ve met kids who have names I can’t pronounce from reading them but I assume there is a reason. I’ve seen a few not so super and a few really lovely ones… So like I said case by case
All names were made up at some point of time actually. I suppose we’re talking about modern invented names specifically? I’m not sure about this but I like Shylor except that people think its made up lol. Not that it matters because its just my taste. I generally hate most modern invented names like [name_f]Neveah[/name_f].
Yeah I know names like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] have a really longggggg history but how did [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] come about? It was created by someone way way back then
Based on a word that came before it and then a word that came before that etc etc Nobody said: ‘I know. I like the sounds ‘cath’ and ‘rin’ so how about [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]?’
