Unisex name for our sweet pea

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

Looking for some help coming up with a nice, uncommon unisex first name for our little one. We don’t want our daughter’s first name to necessarily reveal her gender, because we can’t think of any instances where it is necessary or important and we prefer it to be neutral. We don’t really mind if the middle name is feminine though. It can be anything as long as it flows well and we love it.

Her sister is [name_m]Cove[/name_m] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] (Nicknames “[name_f]Coco[/name_f]” and “Veve”).

My naming style is a little hard to pin down. I like unisex names and I also like some classic or vintage names. I’m pretty open to possibilities but I am not a fan of unusual spellings, the surname trend or the occupational trend ([name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], etc.) I also dislike [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. I don’t mind using traditional boy’s names on girls, but typically only if they’ve crossed over into unisex territory or somehow just work. I won’t be naming my little girl [name_m]Hector[/name_m]

What are your opinions on the following for unisex names:

[name_u]Avi[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Billie[/name_u]
[name_u]Milan[/name_u]
[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]
Menna

Middle Names:

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Leta[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]

Other ideas?

Is [name_m]Cove[/name_m] pronounced like a cove? I feel silly even asking.

[name_u]Avi[/name_u] - Cute. [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] close to [name_f]Aveline[/name_f].
[name_u]August[/name_u] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name.
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u] - Alright. Seems a little dated.
[name_u]Billie[/name_u] - Seems way less cool than [name_m]Cove[/name_m].
[name_u]Milan[/name_u] - [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t love place names.
[name_u]Georgie[/name_u] - See [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. Different style.
Menna - Makes me think of amenorrhea.

[name_u]Avi[/name_u] is my favorite with [name_m]Cove[/name_m], along with [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Camille[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]? After [name_m]Cove[/name_m] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] I think [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Eleni[/name_f] is pretty. Or [name_f]Elena[/name_f].

Other firsts:
Aven
[name_f]Avis[/name_f]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_m]Fate[/name_m]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]
[name_u]Haven[/name_u]
[name_f]Isle[/name_f]
[name_f]Journey[/name_f]
[name_u]Jensen[/name_u]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_u]Merle[/name_u]
[name_f]Maven[/name_f]
[name_u]North[/name_u]
[name_u]Padgett[/name_u]
[name_u]Ren[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_u]Seneca[/name_u]
[name_u]Tatum[/name_u]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_u]Wylie[/name_u]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]

I think [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] would work beautifully with [name_m]Cove[/name_m] - [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] would make a gorgeous combo.

I also think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] could work - [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Freya[/name_f], perhaps?

From your list I like [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] the best. I think it looks pretty.

I also like these unisex names

[name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_u]Parker[/name_u]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_m]Bayne[/name_m] NN [name_u]Bay[/name_u] but that might be too much with [name_m]Cove[/name_m] unless you like the connection
[name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_u]Blair[/name_u]
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_m]Boone[/name_m]
[name_u]Drue[/name_u]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_u]Joss[/name_u]
[name_u]Laine[/name_u]
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]
[name_u]Oak[/name_u]/[name_u]Oakley[/name_u]

Ha! Amenorrhea. I never would have thought of that, but you’re right.

[name_u]Avi[/name_u] and [name_u]August[/name_u] are my favourites of that list too. Is it a big deal if [name_u]Avi[/name_u] is similar to [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]? I get what you mean about [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. My tastes are really all over the place sometimes. Would you say [name_u]August[/name_u] is fairly unisex these days? I’ve never met an [name_u]August[/name_u].

I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], and like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] from your suggestions. Thank you! And yes, [name_m]Cove[/name_m] is pronounced just like a cove.

[name_u]Wynn[/name_u] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is a great combo. I also think [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] and [name_m]Cove[/name_m] would work well together. Thank you so much!

I never used to like unisex or non-standard (surname, place) girl names until I started coming here and seeing all these cool names! I love all of these. [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] and [name_m]Cove[/name_m] works great. One syllable, not actually BOY names, and homophones with positive words. [name_u]August[/name_u] could cross over; whenever I bring it up as a boy name I like my dad says “that’s a BOY name?!” so apparently it “reads” girly. Not sure why I like [name_u]Billie[/name_u], but I do! I don’t mind that it’s not super matchy, and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Coco[/name_f] fit well.

I like all the MNs, but am very into [name_f]Greta[/name_f] lately! [name_u]Billie[/name_u] [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is so cute I’d be tempted to call her by the whole thing.

Others:
[name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_u]Frankie[/name_u]
[name_u]Lou[/name_u]
[name_u]Lake[/name_u] … But I guess not with [name_m]Cove[/name_m]
[name_m]Paulie[/name_m]
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
[name_f]Brynn[/name_f]
[name_m]Liev[/name_m] ([name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ev)
[name_f]Neve[/name_f]
[name_u]Tobin[/name_u]
[name_u]Alcott[/name_u]
[name_u]Austen[/name_u]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_u]Dell[/name_u]

I have a female cousin named [name_u]August[/name_u]. She changed her name to [name_u]August[/name_u] for a career in showbiz.

I like [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] the best with [name_m]Cove[/name_m], and I like the suggestion of [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. Very pretty.

No, I don’t think it’s terrible that [name_u]Avi[/name_u] is close to [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. It’s not like you say [name_m]Cove[/name_m] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] all the time, do you? Now, as much as I’m into this reverse match thing, I’m not sure you should go and name her [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Colette[/name_f], with [name_m]Cove[/name_m] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. That seems slightly silly. Though I love [name_f]Colette[/name_f] so much - [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f] might be more acceptable. (Not that you’ve got [name_f]Colette[/name_f] on your list, just saying…)

To be honest, [name_u]Avi[/name_u] might feel more boyish to me than [name_u]August[/name_u], if only for the fact that [name_u]Avi[/name_u] is more of a traditional male Hebrew name. I’m not at all saying I think it has to be a boy’s name, and I think it works well with [name_m]Cove[/name_m] for a sister. It does get you into this V thing, with [name_m]Cove[/name_m] and [name_u]Avi[/name_u], and back to back, they’re a little on the rough side to say, but doable for sure.

[name_u]August[/name_u], well, I won’t say I think it’s totally unisex these days, because it’s historically a male name, but definitely it feels appropriate on either gender. [name_u]March[/name_u], like [name_u]August[/name_u], seems like a gender-bender month name. I think [name_u]March[/name_u] also makes me think of [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, and therefore girls, giving it a unisex vibe.

I have long loved [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] - girl or boy, really - and have recently become enamored with [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] (and [name_m]Nash[/name_m]!), so I’m glad to hear those you liked.

Also, for what it’s worth, off your middle name list, I think that [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Leta[/name_f], and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] best capture the feel of [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. I do find myself pulling for a longer middle name with many of the first names you’re considering, something like: [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_f]Estrella[/name_f], [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Julietta[/name_f], [name_f]Lilias[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabeau[/name_f], [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelie[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], or [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

[name_m]Cove[/name_m] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] and …
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f], [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Mirabeau[/name_f], [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Ophelie[/name_f]
[name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Estrella[/name_f], [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Julietta[/name_f], [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_f]Mirabeau[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]

Oops…posted twice.

[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] [name_f]Esme[/name_f], or [name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] all sound just perfect to me.

Good luck choosing, and congratulations!

I think [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] works best with your daughter’s one syllable first name. [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] [name_f]Camille[/name_f] would be my suggestion. It seems to match the style of [name_m]Cove[/name_m]'s name and sounds great to my ears.

Thanks for all these great suggestions! I’m busy looking up all these names now. I love so many of them. [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] is a possibility for a middle name. Is it pronounced [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-o-nee?

I like [name_m]Liev[/name_m] a lot! [name_m]Cove[/name_m] and [name_m]Liev[/name_m] sound nice together I think. I must have a thing for v’s.

[name_u]Avi[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a beautiful combo.

I personally pronounce [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] as lee-OH-knee. I think it’s a gorgeous name!

I’m of the opinion [name_m]Cove[/name_m] and [name_m]Liev[/name_m] are a little similar in sound. With [name_m]Liev[/name_m] Schrieber, it also seems to have a manly image (for me at least).

Maybe too theme-y, but I thought of [name_u]Dune[/name_u]. Or even [name_f]Lune[/name_f]. (Risk the Loony nickname?) Or Kestrel. [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. [name_u]Rue[/name_u]. [name_u]Blue[/name_u]. I also think, going off word names, what about [name_u]Quince[/name_u]? It’s a foodie name, but similar to [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].

[name_m]Cove[/name_m] makes me think of shelter. A pp mentioned [name_u]Haven[/name_u], which I think fits nicely w/that idea w/o being too over the top (like [name_u]Harbor[/name_u], e.g.). A cove is also a term used in Appalachian regions for a clearing in a forest, or a meadow. And an Old English term for a meadow is [name_f]Lea[/name_f]. [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] & [name_f]Lea[/name_f] might be too feminine for you, though. Is [name_u]River[/name_u] too hippie-ish? [name_u]Bayley[/name_u]/[name_u]Brooke[/name_u] too overtly feminine? [name_f]Marin[/name_f] (more association w/water)?

Good luck!

I’d avoid actual boy names for your daughter, so it doesn’t seem like you were hoping for a boy. It’s kind of sad to me that you feel like her name should keep her gender a secret to avoid sexism. I’ve never met anyone named [name_m]Cove[/name_m] but I like it, it’s very unique but still familiar and nature-y.

Some names that sound good with [name_m]Cove[/name_m]:
[name_f]Arbor[/name_f]
[name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u]

[name_f]Greige[/name_f]- ‘greyzh’ (it’s grey + beige)
[name_m]Rigby[/name_m]
[name_m]Basil[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] on a girl. Met one before since then I love it.

PP suggestion of [name_f]Indy[/name_f], [name_u]Remy[/name_u]/[name_u]Remi[/name_u], and [name_u]Madigan[/name_u] are super. I’ve also always found the name [name_u]Prairie[/name_u] so intriguing and fun! And, for your V kick, [name_u]Vale[/name_u] is so, so cool.

Another PP mentioned thematic similarities between [name_m]Cove[/name_m] and [name_u]Haven[/name_u]. That’s beautiful. I really like those together!

I’m in hysterics that NB actually lists [name_f]Greige[/name_f] as a name. That’s too much! [name_m]Rigby[/name_m] is a winner. Can’t decide if it’s too far boy? Maybe [name_u]Ripley[/name_u]? [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]?
