hi berries! hope you’re all having a lovely holiday season!
[name_f][/name_f]
i’ve been looking for some unusual or uncommon Biblical girl names, as i’ve been fascinated by their male counterparts such as eliakim, nehemiah, jairus, lazarus, hezekiah, hosea, aquila, eliel, neriah, ananias, etc.
[name_f][/name_f]
right now i have a short list of ruhamah, zipporah, hadassah, junia, atarah, selah, jemima, and apphia. i also love the sounds of sapphira and peninah, but don’t think i could get past the Biblical namesakes! any suggestions that you think might go well with this list, i’d so appreciate!
From the OT: Shiprah and [name_f]Puah[/name_f], [name_f]Keturah[/name_f], [name_f]Keziah[/name_f], [name_f]Rahab[/name_f], [name_f]Michal[/name_f], [name_f]Zillah[/name_f], [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_m]Jael[/name_m], [name_f]Dinah[/name_f], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Atara[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f] (unsure how common this is where you are), [name_f]Micaiah[/name_f], [name_f]Naamah[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
From the NT: [name_f]Salome[/name_f], Talitha/Tabitha, [name_f]Junia[/name_f], [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f], [name_f]Syntyche[/name_f],
[name_m]Oh[/name_m] I love [name_m]Eliel[/name_m] and [name_f]Aquila[/name_f] and [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] especially from your boys’ list! [name_f][/name_f] I’m also so incredibly fond of [name_f]Hadassah[/name_f] and [name_f]Junia[/name_f] on your girls’ one! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]In[/name_f] addition to those, here are a few of my favorites:
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Rahab[/name_f] (the beginning wasn’t so great but I love her redemptive arc and how her story ends! [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]The[/name_m] [name_m]Christian[/name_m] author [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] Afshar wrote a fabulous[name_f][/name_f] book that made me fall in love with Rahab; I think she’s fabulous!)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Tirzah[/name_f] (means “favorable”, convinced [name_m]Moses[/name_m] to let her and her sisters inherit her father’s land since he had no sons—and the [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f] in Ben-Hur is also so fun)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Olivet[/name_f] (place name; sort of similar to [name_f]Selah[/name_f] in that there’s no official character with the name, but I’m obsessed with her and love the connection to the Mt. of Olives)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Talitha[/name_f] (from the Aramaic phrase “talitha cumi” which [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] said to Jairus’s daughter!)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Liel[/name_f] (which I believe is related to Eliel!)
[name_f][/name_f]
Jochebed/Yocheved (Edie or [name_f]Ebba[/name_f] or even Jo/Jojo/Josie might be sweet nns?)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Bithiah[/name_f] (LOVE, name Pharaoh’s daughter took on as she left with the Israelites. [name_f][/name_f] Somewhere in Chronicles (maybe 1 Chronicles? [name_f][/name_f] Can’t fully remember), the Bible tells us she married an Israelite man and had several children with him. [name_f][/name_f] I think it’s bith EYE ah but I can’t stop saying BITH-ee-ah in my head)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Keziah[/name_f] (less controversial sister to [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] and less teasable than Keren)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Kelila[/name_f] (I don’t think it’s biblical but it is a pretty Hebrew name!)
[name_f][/name_f]
Hazelelponi (haha, KIDDING! [name_f][/name_f] But [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] could work as a nn if someone were brave enough lol)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Jael[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Keturah[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Merab[/name_f] (though I like just [name_f]Mira[/name_f] much more)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Michal[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Tamar[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
Zibiah/Tzivia (I’m obsessed with [name_f]Tzivia[/name_f] lol)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Zipporah[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Drusilla[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Euodia[/name_f] or the related [name_f]Evodie[/name_f] or [name_f]Evodia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Persis[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Prisca[/name_f] (Priscilla)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Salome[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
Also fond of [name_f]Cana[/name_f], [name_f]Havilah[/name_f], [name_f]Gethsemane[/name_f], [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], [name_f]Bethel[/name_f], [name_f]Bethesda[/name_f], and [name_f]Zorah[/name_f], though they are place names rather than character names.
[name_f][/name_f]
Similarly I love [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], [name_f]Eliora[/name_f], [name_f]Liora[/name_f], and [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] for their meanings, though they don’t appeal in the Bible to my knowledge.
