I’ve often had a soft spot for some unusual flower names (I have some already on my list; [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_f]Ffion[/name_f]), and I’m wondering whether or not I should keep them on my list, or chuck them in the bin, for lack of a better term.
Here’s my list;
[name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] - honours my grandmother, and my strong English heritage. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] - a cute kind of fun nod to myself, as my mum and dad have always said I remind them of the tv show character - it’s also a favourite show of mine. [name_f]Posie[/name_f]/[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - I can never settle on a spelling for this?? [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] - I adore [name_f]Honey[/name_f], so I feel like this may work? It’s pretty common in the UK (it’s consistently been in the top 1000 since 2009, so I feel like it’s not super strange? I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] but have very strong English, Scottish and Welsh roots).
What do you think of these? Are they usable? Too fanciful? I do like names that are a little out there for where I live ([name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Darcie[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], etc. etc.), and I am going to school to work with children, so I’m inclined to like names that are a little less common.
[name_f]Bluebell[/name_f]: I really like this name. It’s quirky, sweet, and evocative, and I love its personal meaning to you. If you like nicknames, then it’s a great name to keep on your list, but if you don’t, I’d recommend scrapping it since I’m almost certain that many people will call her either [name_u]Blue[/name_u] or [name_u]Bell[/name_u]. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]: I have always loved this name. It’s so elegant and modern, but has the feel of several classics. I think this is a keeper for sure. Very wearable. [name_f]Blossom[/name_f]: A sweet, sweet name, and gorgeous for sure, but I’m not sure how useable it is as a first, as I think it might be a bit of a professional hassle. [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] strikes me as a nice nickname and an even better middle. [name_f]Posie[/name_f]/[name_f]Posy[/name_f]: I feel the same way about [name_f]Posie[/name_f]/[name_f]Posy[/name_f] as I do about [name_f]Blossom[/name_f], except I’m not as partial to the sound of these two. A bit cutesy for my taste. [name_f]Pixie[/name_f]: Adorable, for certain, and spunky with that “x,” but ultimately, I don’t think it’s usable. I think [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] would forever conjur the image of a young girl, which might be an impediment in adult life.
As first names, I like [name_f]Posy[/name_f]/[name_f]Posie[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]! They’re different but feel wearable and usable. [name_f]Posy[/name_f] has such a gorgeous and sweet sound and I like the delicate feel to [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] but how it also offers more versatile nickname possibilities (Prim, [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Ro[/name_f], [name_u]Poe[/name_u], [name_f]Immy[/name_f] etc.) [name_f]Posy[/name_f] could even be a nickname for [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and then you’d get both in one!
[name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] is beautiful but a more bold choice though I think the familiarity of -belle names could make it usable. I like the personal connection it has to you too.
[name_f]Pixie[/name_f] and [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] are nice, but I’d keep them for middle names
I recently came upon the name [name_f]Laelia[/name_f] (a type of orchid) and have become enamored with its beautiful flow and the rarity of its use in today’s naming world.
[name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] and [name_f]Posy[/name_f]/[name_f]Posie[/name_f] are my favorites!! Have you considered [name_f]Petal[/name_f], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], or [name_f]Lilac[/name_f]?
I like [name_f]Posy[/name_f], [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. I would ditch [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] and [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] – they seem too out there.
My opinion on these names’ usability is probably skewed for you, as you know I’m a [name_u]Brit[/name_u] so they’re hardly off-beat names here. But anyway!
[name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] - usable, but I would stick it to the middle name position. It is sweet, but possibly too sweet, and it won’t sit well on an adult
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] - completely usable, it’s a lovely name
[name_f]Blossom[/name_f] - again, see [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f]. It is a sweet name and I love the combo you have for it, but I would stick it as a middle name (I was [name_f]Buttercup[/name_f], my older sister was [name_f]Blossom[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Posie[/name_f]/[name_f]Posy[/name_f] - I think [name_f]Posie[/name_f] is cuter and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] is more sophisticated, I prefer [name_f]Posie[/name_f]. So sweet and very usable
[name_f]Pixie[/name_f] - it works, thanks to [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] [name_m]Lott[/name_m]. It isn’t common here, don’t let the top 1000 fool you, but it isn’t unheard of. I don’t know of any Pixies whatsoever ([name_f]Pixie[/name_f] [name_m]Lott[/name_m]'s name is her nickname), but I have come across at least one through mutual friends or someone off a UK Facebook group, I can’t remember where
My favourite unusual flower name is [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]. I would ditch [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] and [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] as firsts, and maybe look at [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] as a nickname only (I think it works as a nickname for anything).
[name_u]Blue[/name_u] bell - yes and no… [name_f]Bluebelle[/name_f] I thing would spell best… You could get [name_f]Belle[/name_f] out and use it vs [name_u]Blue[/name_u] and [name_u]Bell[/name_u]… You’ve got [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] out there though in the celebrity name realm so there’s that… I can see some teasing potential as a first name as a teen and [name_u]BLUE[/name_u] is an interesting color name force little one… I would prefer [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] or something but I kinda love [name_f]Bluebelle[/name_f] as a middle for someone looking on this path. I think of [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] as well in connection with this.
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] - this is darling, ages well, Prim, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosey[/name_f] are dear… I do think of it medically though and it doesn’t want to feel too name in my mind BUT it feels the best of your list
[name_f]Pixie[/name_f] - I agree with your thoughts that from about 12- 70 this name feels inappropriate as a first name though a clever nn and charming middle… Though it’s not terribly uncommon I wouldn’t suggest useing it unless I had a specific reason or it was commonplace in my area
[name_f]Posie[/name_f] / [name_f]Posy[/name_f] - I wouldn’t use either… Honestly both feel wrong spelling wise and I want it to be [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]/ [name_f]Rosey[/name_f]… It just feels off
[name_f]Blossom[/name_f] - I wouldn’t use for 4 reasons… 1 there used to be a coming of age sitcom by this name about this girl and I immediately think of it…2. Currently on Riverdale the show … The blossom family is evil… 3. There’s no way to shorten this accept maybe B… You could try Blossy? It’s not a word name that feels super comfortable 4. It really does evoke the imagery of something blossoming and growing… Cute on a kid, awkward on a teen… Difficult perhaps as an adult but cute again on a grandma… [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t hate it but personally not as a first name would be my recommendation.
Also I’ll add to my previous post [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] as suggestions
It’s funny that you mention not knowing anyone named [name_f]Pixie[/name_f], I’ve actually met two from the UK! As far as I know, [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] was their full first name too. So weird how that works out, haha! Also, I forgot about the Powerpuff Girls! I was talking about a 90s sitcom called [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] - it may have only been in the US? LOL the main character is named [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] (her best friend is called Six lol), and she’s very bubbly, creative, happy-go-lucky, and when she likes or supports something, she’s very passionate about it. (She also dresses in the eccentric style of the early 90s lol, I tend to dress the same way at times - overalls with bright, patterned tshirts; floppy sunhats, etc). I think she was played by [name_f]Mayim[/name_f] Bialik! The Powerpuff Girls are another really great connection though - my younger sister is so much like [name_f]Blossom[/name_f], lol, I was always more like Bubbles!
Actually, the sitcom is why I love the name! Lol funny how some people find it a negative thing but others find stuff like that positive! haha
