My husband just started reading [name]Robert[/name] [name]Jordan[/name]'s Wheel of time series and was telling me about some of the characters, and a thought occurred to me. There are many names out there that are very cool and unusual but have mainstream abbreviations that make them totally socially acceptable.
Examples:
Matrim from the Wheel of Time, called [name]Mat[/name]
Samwise from The [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings, called [name]Sam[/name]
I was curious to see what other names people knew of that are really truly unusual, but no one would know it by the nicknames they bear.
Bethlehem/[name]Bethsabee[/name] nn [name]Beth[/name]
Camomile nn [name]Cammie[/name]/[name]Millie[/name]
[name]Falene[/name] nn [name]Lena[/name]
[name]Geneva[/name]/[name]Genoa[/name] nn [name]Gen[/name]
[name]Indiana[/name]/[name]Isannah[/name]/[name]Kimana[/name] nn [name]Anna[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name] nn [name]Maggie[/name]
[name]Rosabelle[/name]/Rosebud/[name]Rosen[/name] nn [name]Rose[/name]
A friends daughters name is [name]Jessamyn[/name] but everyone calls her [name]Jess[/name] or [name]Jessie[/name].
I have one that is the other way round. My college roommate told me that her name was Fofie (rhymes with [name]Sophie[/name]) and I came to later find out that her name was actually [name]Sofia[/name]. My logical nn would have been [name]Sophie[/name].
Although, not unheard of, my son is [name]Fintan[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]/Finny.
We really liked [name]Finn[/name] but not 100% with [name]Finley[/name]/[name]Finlay[/name] and the Irish [name]St[/name] name [name]Fintan[/name] was discovered. Perfect. If you ask him his name (he’s 3), its always [name]Fintan[/name], never [name]Finn[/name]!
