Unusual / Welsh names

Post removed.

I like [name_f]Lowri[/name_f] (LOH-ree) and [name_f]Eleri[/name_f] (eh-LAIR-ee). [name_f]Angharad[/name_f] is the name of one of my best friends, though we don’t call her that.

[name_f]Angharad[/name_f] is a name that I’ve always found interesting but never been able to like (the first time I met an [name_f]Angharad[/name_f] I was about 8 and thought she had said her name was [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-Harrods and thought it was weird that she was named after Harrods the shop)

I really like [name_f]Catrin[/name_f], Lliwen, [name_f]Lowri[/name_f] and [name_f]Sian[/name_f]. I’ve recently been trying to think of some more Welsh names to add to my list to honour my Welsh side of the family, I think I’m going to look some more into Lliwen

Hefin made me laugh because it sounds kind of similar to [name_f]Heaven[/name_f]

I too know an [name_f]Angharad[/name_f] (not the one on this list). The name has always intrigued me as it’s so different, even to other Welsh names.

I think Hefin comes from ‘Haf’ which is the Welsh word for [name_f]Summer[/name_f]. It would actually be pronounced like ‘[name_f]Heaven[/name_f]’ because F’s are pronounced like V’s in Welsh! I believe it is only used as a boys name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favourites from the list are [name_f]Catrin[/name_f], [name_f]Eleri[/name_f], [name_f]Ffion[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sian[/name_f].

Welsh names are quite intriguing, aren’t they? Here are my faves from your list (although some aren’t Welsh at all).

[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
Aled
[name_f]Angharad[/name_f]
Arwyn
[name_f]Catrin[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleri[/name_f]
[name_f]Ffion[/name_f]
[name_m]Geraint[/name_m]
[name_m]Gethin[/name_m]
Gruffydd - [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] would probably be easier in English speaking countries
[name_m]Iain[/name_m]
Kneath
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
Lliwen
[name_f]Lowri[/name_f]
[name_f]Nia[/name_f]
[name_m]Owain[/name_m]
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_f]Sian[/name_f]
[name_u]Sion[/name_u]
[name_m]Steffan[/name_m]

[name_f]Angharad[/name_f] - Like this a lot.
[name_f]Karoline[/name_f] - I like this. I think of [name_f]Karoline[/name_f] as a “-leen” name and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] as a “-line” name, but I like both.
Lliwen - I love Lilwen, which I thought this was at first.
[name_m]Owain[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this and [name_u]Owen[/name_u] no matter how popular [name_u]Owen[/name_u] gets.
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - Know 2. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. Wish one of the ones we knew didn’t ruin the name for my husband.
[name_f]Sian[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u].

[name_u]Sion[/name_u] interests me. [name_m]How[/name_m] is it pronounced?

You say it like ‘shon’.

Actually, this is pronounced ‘ay-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-an’.

I love Arwyn (but spelled [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]), but unfortunately it seems inseparable from elves and [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings.

Vigdís was an Icelander  You can almost always spot them.
