Updated opinions on Cosette?

I haven’t heard [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] mentioned on nb recently but it’s kept coming back to me…
I’m aware it’s made up (previously people had had some strong opinions on this…) and I love [name_f]Colette[/name_f] too, if not a tiny bit more but I can’t shake [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]. So I thought I’d just ask you lovely people what you thought!

I like it. It sounds very feminine and classy to me. You could use the nickname [name_f]Etta[/name_f]. <3

I love the name [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]! I love [name_f]Colette[/name_f] too, but I think I might like [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] more

I don’t have a strong opinion on it either way. It’s not a name I would consider, but I’d love to meet a [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]!

I mean, it’s not made-up in the sense that “Oh, yeah, I made up the name [name_f]Eunique[/name_f] or [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f] because I want my kid to be ONE OF A KIND and possibly illiterate.” I mean, yeah, [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] probably made it up but that was 150 years ago. I’m not worried about it. All names were made up at some point. As long as it wasn’t yesterday, we’re good.

Obviously, I think immediately of [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] from [name_u]Les[/name_u] Miserables. It’s not a bad namesake–[name_f]Cosette[/name_f], while not particularly strong of character, is innocent and angelic. Nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of C names, with a few exceptions (like [name_f]Clara[/name_f]) but that’s just a personal thing. I don’t love the name [name_f]Colette[/name_f] or [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] either, but I see no problem with the name! It’s fresh and unusual without sounding cheap or clunky. Follow your heart and use it!

[name_f]Cosette[/name_f] feels insubstantial. For me it’s too close to saying “little thing” in french, and “thing” is not a name meaning I’d like for my daughter.

Like somebody else mentioned, I think of [name_u]Les[/name_u] Miserables when I hear or see the name [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]. It’s a pretty well known show, so if you aren’t a fan of [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]'s tie to it, I wouldn’t suggest using it as a first name. It’s a lovely name though, and in my opinion, if it’s from a theatrical production, I already love it!

I really like [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]! It’s a name that’s unique without being too out there. Plus nicknames Cosie, [name_f]Coco[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] are adorable. The name was invented such a long time ago that I don’t think it’s an issue! Technically, [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are made up as well but no one has a problem with them.
Obviously my first association will be [name_u]Les[/name_u] Miserables, but it’s considered such a classic that I don’t think it matters.

It’s very pretty. I didn’t know it was a made-up name by [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but it’s an improvement over the made-up names of today.

I love [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]!!! Granted I am enormous fan of [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis and have seen it several times on Broadway, but I think the name is very sweet - it’s on my list! I much prefer it to [name_f]Colette[/name_f] (I’ve just never cared for [name_f]Colette[/name_f]). I wouldn’t worry about the “made-up” aspect because the name doesn’t sound ridiculous like some of the truly made-up names today (I read a story today about a child named Abcde mega eyeroll).

So yeah, I would love to meet a little [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], but only with this spelling. There is some random family on YouTube who named their baby [name_f]Cozette[/name_f] and had no idea how to even pronounce [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis. A part of my soul died when the mom said it out loud. The z spelling looks trashy to me and much more “made-up”.

TL;DR [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] is beautiful!!

thank you guys for all your replies!

All the support for [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] is wonderful! I’m a firm believer in ‘most names were made up at one point’ so if it came to it and I loved it unconditionally I would probably use it. I love [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis and speak french myself and although I know it means ‘thing’, there are lots of names that have less than desirable meanings!

I’m so glad I asked for your thoughts!
