We have settled on [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] for our baby due in a few weeks. Unfortunately, I am aware of several [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary meanings that have sexual connotations. Are these common knowledge? Is this going to cause problems for her in high school? I really don’t want to change her name, but I’m worried about teenage boys. We live in a very conservative, religious area, but I have no idea what local teenage boys are like. I assume they still occasionally say dirty things.
[name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary…
I think it’s probably fine. I doubt many people have searched for [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] on [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary, anyway. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a sweet vintage gem, and you should use it!
I admit I used [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary myself to find out what you were referring too - and it wasn’t even the sexual connotation OR drug reference that I had in mind… not to mention the fact I had to really think about both of those and definitely wouldn’t automatically think of them hearing the name [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] (they were listed on UD further down though…)
I’ve never once heard of the top two usages… even as a teenager. Maybe it’s a cultural thing?
Plus slang changed over time - by the time she’s in high school those specific connotations may be entirely out of date, baring in mind we’re talking roughly 15+ years. Not to mention the fact they’re hardly commonly used!
I wouldn’t worry about it. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a beautiful name.
ugh…urban dictionary…
have you looked up any other names or words on there? people just make stuff up. according to urban dictionary, every name and word in the english language has sexual connotations! i wouldn’t worry about it.
It’s a classic. I wouldn’t worry about the slang.
I have never heard [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] used as anything other than a literal pearl - as in a pearl necklace - or as a name. I had to check [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary to see what you meant. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary deter you from using a favourite name - slang changes SO much over time, and is often very different from place to place.
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a lovely name!
Ok, thanks, I feel a bit reassured… I had heard of both things before looking them up on UD, but I guess they’re not common enough that it will be the first thing people think of (or hopefully ever think of) when they hear her name. I love [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] so much, but I was really rethinking it. I’ll forget about it and stick with it!
Thanks!
No way. It’s like fearing to use the word ‘dog’ to describe a canine, lest everyone think you’re talking about doggie style. It’s so, so, so far removed from everyday associations I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
I’ve already known the sexual connotations with “pearl”, but that rarely comes to mind when I think of the name. I think of the association with the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and the gemstone. I doubt there would be many problems with the name and by the time she is older there will be other slang terms.
Lol, but true.
Agree with pp. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] necklace is an old reference. There are a ton of names which can be turned into sexual innuendo-- kids are inventive and sometimes mean. I wouldn’t let it deter you if you love the name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] think how many Jacks, Peters, etc. wouldn’t have been born if their parents had been dissuaded!
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is adorable. [name_u]Urban[/name_u] dictionary had me doubting my name choices as well, but it’s hardly reliable. I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]!
I live in canada and the term pearl necklace here is a common dirty term. There may be some allusions to [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] = semen but it wouldnt be enough to stop me. Boys will be boys theyll always find something.
Hmmm, I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] as well and I didn’t know that term. As others have said, slang changes over time and I doubt those connotations will lead to teasing later on. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a lovely classic, and if you love it, you should use it.
I wouldn’t worry. I have used [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary before only because certain normal word people would use in slang term I have no idea what they are talking about, and they would laugh. I seriously hate slang terms it’s stupid and uneducated sounding. I didn’t know anything about pearl in that use, then again anyone can make anyth9ing into something sexual if they tried hard enough. I wouldn’t worry about it and use [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] still.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t read [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary but if you must, please don’t take any of it seriously! What a load of made up rubbish. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a classic, elegant gem. Use it!
I have a very easily teasable name but I never got any problems with it aside from friendly joking. So I think it also depends on where you live.
haha, I agree. I haven’t looked it up in a while, but I remember they had some pretty dirty things to say about [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], too, which, for me, is everything sweet and innocent. One of the reasons I like it so much is that it feels innocent to me, and sweet, and good-hearted. UD makes everything seem promiscuous, ugh.
I would just ignore it. I’ve never heard anything sexual relating to the name/word [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]/pearl?
I’ve known [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a slang term for clitorus but it’s not a widely used term. To be honest, most names on [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary are not portrayed favourably!
I didn’t think of the sexual connotations, either. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was the [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Ferrell[/name_m] “The Landlord” video: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/74/the-landlord-from-will-ferrell-and-adam-ghost-panther-mckay
Definitely use [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
