Usable Ancient Roman Names

So today we found out that our second child is a boy! We have a little boy named [name]Felix[/name] who will be 2 in February.
Hubby has decided that he wants his children’s first names to follow an Ancient [name]Roman[/name] theme, but we are finding it difficult to come up with any good Ancient [name]Roman[/name] boys names.
My choice is [name]Dexter[/name]. This is not actually Ancient [name]Roman[/name], but it is a Latin word, and therefore could have been used as a ‘nickname’ in Ancient [name]Rome[/name]…exactly like [name]Felix[/name], which is just the Latin word for ‘lucky’ and used as a nickname, not an actual name. Hubby is not convinced though, even though I strongly feel that [name]Dexter[/name] is THE NAME.
We considered [name]Julius[/name] earlier in the pregnancy but I just don’t love it.
We also have considered [name]Maximus[/name] but he would always be called [name]Max[/name] and a friend just had a little [name]Max[/name].

Any suggestions for boys names that fit the theme and work well on a modern child?

[name]Julius[/name] is cool! I like it, but if it’s not the one, it’s not the one. [name]Maximus[/name], nn [name]Max[/name], would have been nice, too. Too bad it didn’t work!

My first idea was [name]Augustus[/name]. It’s a bit over-the-top, but I think it works with [name]Felix[/name], and the nns Auggie and [name]Gus[/name] are really cute.

Here’s a list of Ancient [name]Roman[/name] boys’ names that Nameberry put together–they have some good ones: 100 Cool Boy Names From Ancient Cultures | Nameberry. I really like [name]Lucius[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Amadeus[/name], [name]Andreas[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], [name]Marius[/name], etc. [name]Cassius[/name], which could be nn’d [name]Cash[/name], could be nice, too.

[name]Marius[/name] reminded me of [name]Darius[/name]… not sure it’s really Ancient [name]Roman[/name], but I like it, and I think [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Darius[/name] are cool together…

Good luck!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Dexter[/name] and I think its fantastic with [name]Felix[/name]! My only suggestion would be [name]Atticus[/name]?

I really like [name]Cassius[/name] (nn [name]Cass[/name]).

I’m also a fan of [name]Junius[/name], [name]Marius[/name] ([name]Mars[/name] is a darling nickname), [name]Marcus[/name], [name]Aquila[/name] (eagle in Latin - used as a cognomen), [name]Titus[/name], Kaius and [name]Lucan[/name].

I particularly like the idea of brothers [name]Felix[/name] & [name]Titus[/name]!

Thanks guys!
I love [name]Augustus[/name] because I love [name]Augie[/name]. But I’m not sure I could get away with the really long, really ancient-sounding names.
[name]Mars[/name] as a nickname for [name]Marius[/name] is making me see that one in a whole new light…wasn’t sure of it before, now I’m willing to at least consider it.
We have been throwing around [name]Caius[/name] all day, and I really love it (pronounced [name]KY[/name]-us). However, hubby firmly believes the correct pronunciation is [name]GUY[/name]-us (even when spelled with a C). I am finding this a bit confusing but I really do love [name]Caius[/name].

No you’re right about [name]Caius[/name]. Caius pronunciation: How to pronounce Caius in Latin, Dutch
[name]Gaius[/name] is it’s own name. I don like [name]Caius[/name] too!

I love Greek and [name]Roman[/name] names so here’s a list of [name]Roman[/name] names i think are usable:

[name]Albus[/name] – “white/birght”
[name]Antonius[/name] – [name]Roman[/name] form of [name]Anthony[/name]
[name]Augustus[/name] – [name]Love[/name] this
[name]Aurelius[/name] – [name]Golden[/name], gilded
[name]Caeser[/name]
[name]Cassian[/name] – empty
[name]Cassius[/name] – empty
[name]Cicero[/name] – chickpea
[name]Claudius[/name]
[name]Cornelius[/name]
[name]Cyprian[/name] – From [name]Cyprus[/name]
[name]Faustus[/name] – This also means [name]Lucky[/name]…but the play might make you not want to use it. (It wouldn’t bother me though)
[name]Hadrian[/name]
[name]Lucius[/name] – [name]Light[/name] (loo-shuhs)
[name]Marcus[/name]
[name]Seneca[/name]
[name]Severus[/name]
[name]Titus[/name]
[name]Valerius[/name] – to be strong

[name]Do[/name] you like any of those? If not, I could probably come up with more

I love the way [name]Lucius[/name] looks written down, but don’t like the sound.
I also really like [name]Marcus[/name], but it has a bad association for me.
[name]Hadrian[/name]…yes, I like this! Is it pronounced like [name]Adrian[/name] with an H or like Had-rian?
I think that those three would work best for our family out of the suggestions…and we are still clinging to [name]Caius[/name]/[name]Gaius[/name].

I had another idea for you… granted, it was inspired by @dantea’s post.

WDYT of [name]Alban[/name]? [name]Alba[/name] is gaining traction for the girls, but I’ve always liked [name]Alban[/name] so much more for a boy. I think it’s interesting, striking, unique, and I think [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Alban[/name] go great together. It’s not too long-or-complicated, and I think it’s very usable. If it fit in better with my favorites, I would probably consider it, too!

I really like the [name]Caius[/name]/[name]Gaius[/name] option, as well.

Good luck!

[name]Alban[/name] is definitely usable, but Hubby isn’t on board with it because it’s not up to his definition of an ancient roman name. I think that’s why he won’t get on board with [name]Dexter[/name] either. He took some convincing to like the name [name]Felix[/name], and now he loves it…wondering whether I should stick to my guns or not with the [name]Dexter[/name] thing…let’s see if he convinces me with a suggestion! He is getting quite close to swaying me with [name]Caius[/name].

[name]Hadrian[/name] is pronounced like [name]Adrian[/name] with an H yes. Like [name]Hadrian[/name]'s [name]Wall[/name] in the UK.

I almost put [name]Alban[/name] down or the original form, Albanus…but then I changed my mind and went with [name]Albus[/name].

I really like [name]Dexter[/name] with nn [name]Dex[/name], and you’re right, it is a Latin word for “right” so I think if you love, keep trying to sway him, but keep your mind open to other names in case he really won’t be swayed. And like I said before, I love [name]Caius[/name].

I also like these [name]Roman[/name] words that could work as names:
Novus - novel/extraordinary
[name]Vero[/name] - in truth
[name]Avis[/name] - bird
Ferox - fierce
[name]Magnus[/name] - great
[name]Miles[/name] - soldier
[name]Pax[/name] - [name]Peace[/name]
[name]Quintus[/name] - fifth
Strix - owl
Tempus - time
[name]Vesper[/name] - evening
Vox - voice

I really love [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Magnus[/name]. I think those two work well, especially [name]Miles[/name].
We seem stuck on [name]Caius[/name], but I’m less sure about it now because he is sticking with the crazy pronunciation. I just don’t think I can do that. I love [name]Caius[/name], and I like [name]Gaius[/name]. But [name]Caius[/name] pronounced like [name]Gaius[/name] confuses me and will certainly confuse everyone else this child ever meets.

I like [name]Julius[/name].
