This one is a maybe for me. I’ve long loved [name_f]Theda[/name_f], even as a nickname for [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f]. But I ended up marrying a Russian man…so [name_f]Theda[/name_f] sounds like [name_f]Veda[/name_f] anyway. Which led me to consider [name_f]Veda[/name_f]. What do you think of these names & what is the best variation? What is your opinion on using a name that is said 2 different ways by various family members?
[name_f]Veda[/name_f] is nice…I’m not a fan of [name_f]Vada[/name_f], and [name_f]Vita[/name_f] reminds me of [name_m]Vito[/name_m], as in [name_m]Vito[/name_m] Corleone of Godfather fame.
I like the exotic flair of [name_f]Veda[/name_f] the best (I say it “vay-duh” not “vee-duh”). I studied comparative religion in high school and we studied Hinduism and the sacred books called the Vedas. [name_f]Vada[/name_f] doesn’t appeal to me (looks similar to [name_m]Vlad[/name_m] the Impaler aka Dracula). [name_f]Vita[/name_f] would be my second choice. It has a lot of energy.
I love the name [name_f]Veda[/name_f]! [name_f]Veda[/name_f] is the only spelling that I am a fan of. I would pronounce it Vay-da and I don’t think it would be too difficult to get family/ friends on board with one pronunciation
I love [name_f]Vita[/name_f], but [name_f]Veda[/name_f]/[name_f]Vada[/name_f] makes me think of the '70’s and bell bottoms.
Is [name_f]Veda[/name_f] universally pronounced vay-duh? I thought it was pronounced vee-duh. Oh well.
I’d expect pronunciation issues if so.
I believe that [name_f]Veda[/name_f] can be pronounced as Vay-duh and Veet-uh. I know that in the movie versions of [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] it is pronounced Vay-dah by [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_m]Crawford[/name_m], and in the [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] version it is Veet-uh. I am going with [name_u]Joan[/name_u]'s version cause who would argue with her really. It’s also the way that I would pronounce the texts.
[name_f]Vada[/name_f] I say Vay-duh, but the more I look the more I think Darth Vadar.
[name_f]Vita[/name_f] reminds me of Vitamins the more I think of it.
I think I will suggest [name_f]Veda[/name_f] to my husband!
If I were to rank them:
- [name_f]Vita[/name_f] (nn for [name_f]Vittoria[/name_f])
- [name_f]Veda[/name_f] (pronounced the same way as [name_f]Vada[/name_f], but how it looks is prettier [name_f]IMO[/name_f])
- [name_f]Vada[/name_f] (reminds me of Darth Vader)
[name_f]Vada[/name_f] and [name_f]Veda[/name_f] are both pronounced Vay-duh for me. [name_f]Vita[/name_f] or [name_u]Vida[/name_u] meanwhile would be pronounced Vee-tuh or Vee-duh. I think these pronunciations are standard and you wouldn’t run into too many mishaps. You might get some saying Vee-duh when they read [name_f]Veda[/name_f] and Vie-tuh when they read [name_f]Vita[/name_f].
I love the name [name_f]Veda[/name_f] (this spelling), and would consider it if it weren’t for a friend having recently named her baby girl this. One thing to consider with this name is that it is a Sanskrit common noun, meaning “knowledge” and is in a sense a word for “scripture” – The Vedas are texts in hindu religion. It has been recognized as a name though. Doesn’t deter me at all and I think it’s not something everyone will associate with the name but it’s still good to know. [name_f]Vita[/name_f] and [name_u]Vida[/name_u] are also words as well as names, just don’t have religious ties.
[name_f]Vada[/name_f] – this I know from the movie “[name_f]My[/name_f] Girl” – the main character is named [name_f]Vada[/name_f].
[name_f]Vada[/name_f] (and actually all these names, just because I don’t have another association for any of them) reminds me very strongly of the movie, [name_f]My[/name_f] Girl.
Is the [name_f]My[/name_f] Girl thing too strong of a connection? I know it is generally positive, but do you think it’s the very first thing that comes to mind for most?
It’s a very positive association for me. It’s not what first came to mind for me …mainly because though a great movie I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. I’m not sure about others, but either way it’s not an association that overpowers the name and I don’t think you’ll get “you named your kid after the girl in ‘[name_f]My[/name_f] Girl’?” but rather the occasional “wasn’t that the name of …” – unlike [name_f]Leia[/name_f] who will always be [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Leia[/name_f] of [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars and everyone will assume you named your kid after her.
I just can’t get past Darth.
[name_u]Vega[/name_u]… might be better?
I love both [name_f]Veda[/name_f] and [name_f]Vita[/name_f]. I’m not really a fan of [name_f]Vada[/name_f].
I love the name [name_f]Veda[/name_f] /vada. I think I prefer [name_f]Veda[/name_f] because that’s the original Hindu spelling.
As to toe question
About the movie my girl, I think the people from the 90s generation will have that connection with the name, but older or younger generations will just think it’s a name. Anyway , I don’t see the movie as a bad connection.
We just named our puppy [name_f]Veda[/name_f], pronounced “Vay-duh.” We’ve only had positive reactions to it, though some people seem to want to say “Vee-duh” after having seen it in text.
I pronounce [name_f]Veda[/name_f] “vay-duh” and that’s the only way I’ve ever seen online. [name_f]Veda[/name_f] is a lovely name!
For [name_f]Vada[/name_f], I’d probably say “vay-duh” but I want to say “vad-uh”, like [name_u]Nevada[/name_u]. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Vita[/name_f].
If your husband is Russian, have you considered [name_f]Vera[/name_f]?
I like both [name_f]Veda[/name_f] and [name_f]Vita[/name_f] but I see them as two separate names. I pronounce [name_f]Veda[/name_f] veh-duh and [name_f]Vita[/name_f] vee-duh. I was surprised when I watched the movie [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] and they pronounced [name_f]Veda[/name_f] vee-duh. So I would choose between them depending on which pronunciation you like better.
I was also surprised at [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]'s pronunciation of [name_f]Veda[/name_f]!
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister has “claimed” the name [name_f]Vera[/name_f], it’s a family name I think they Vay-duh pronunciation would work best because of this situation.
