Valentina - thoughts?

I’m looking for some opinions on the name [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. It’s one I’ve played around adding to my list as a first name, but I have a few reservations.

Firstly, I almost always opt for short FN’s for girls so [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] feels realllllllly long next to my other favorites. I usually reserve longer names for middles because they seem too much to call out for everyday use, if that makes sense. However, [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] does have many nickname options I am all right with - [name_u]Val[/name_u], [name_f]Ina[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f], [name_f]Letty[/name_f], etc.

Secondly, it’s a lot more common than most of the first names I like. Last year in the US, it was at #165 on the charts. I don’t think I could ultimately look past a name that was used often even if it shouldn’t matter; the “don’t worry” advice hasn’t permeated as it should. But, I’ll admit I don’t know how much the rankings actually mean in real life or if I’m going crazy over nothing.

To sum –

1. What do you think of the name [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]?
2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too long next to my other favorites (see my signature for the names I like) ?
3. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - Common, or not actually that common?

hmm [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is nice, but I like [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] better.

  1. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is not my taste, but I don’t hate it.
  2. I don’t think it’s really long. You can always use nicknames if you do.
  3. I know one [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and she’s thirty.

i have never met another [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], neither have i ever heard of another [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. So I don’t think you have any thing to worry about. Maybe you should look at the popularity list for your state, rather than the whole country. I think [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is a beautiful name that you should definitely consider.

@pinkberry: Thanks for your thoughts. [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] is pretty, but not quite for me.

@liesl: Thank you :slight_smile:

@mnx9x: For my state, she isn’t at least in the top 100 (that’s as far as the rankings go for an individual state as far as I know). Thank you for answering

I think [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is a very pretty name but I’m a sucker for very girl names. I like that it has a lot of nickname options. I’ve never met or heard of another [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] personally or through friendships on social media sites.

  1. I quite like it. I suppose I have a not-so-close relative called this but I may be mistaken. It’s also a name of my former [name_m]German[/name_m] teacher. It is considered a bit old-fashioned where I live so I think of a kind, full woman in her 50-s with short hair and a lovely smile. But I can imagine a charming hot Brazilian girl called [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], too.
  2. I don’t think so, especially if you use a nickname. I think [name_f]Letty[/name_f] is adorable.
  3. I don’t know any children named this, only elderly woman.
I see you didn’t ask for suggestions but [name_f]Valencia[/name_f], which I find lovely, popped into my head while I was writing this.

I live in an area with a huge Hispanic population and know quite a few women named [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. I do not know any non-Hispanic women with that name though. It is a really pretty name, I guess it’s popularity would depend on where you live. All the women I know with the name are in their 30’s or older.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],
I have always had a crush on [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. But I HATE the nicknames [name_u]Val[/name_u] and [name_f]Tina[/name_f], so I always chalked it up as an unusable name, for me. It is pretty long, I struggle with longer names too. Shorter just seems better. I know one [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], she’s a beautiful little girl, always goes by [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]

I like Valenina, but I prefer the french version [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] (pron. [name_f]Valenteen[/name_f]).

I love [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]! I first heard it on the perfume ad for the perfume by [name_m]Valentino[/name_m] with the model [name_f]Freja[/name_f] Beha. I think it’s a beautiful name. It is a little longer than the names in your signature but I think it still flows well with them, you can always use a shortened version. As for it’s popularity, I don’t think it’s too common at all… just because it’s somewhat high in the charts doesn’t mean you will encounter it much or at all in real life.

1. What do you think of the name [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]? I like it
2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too long next to my other favorites (see my signature for the names I like)? Nah, I think it seems fine.
3. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - Common, or not actually that common? I know a [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] but she’s the only one I’ve ever heard the name on.

@legallybrunette, oleander, noetje, princessariel, renrose: Thanks for your answers!

@handsallover: Thank you. Either [name_f]Letty[/name_f] or [name_u]Val[/name_u] would be the nickname I most see myself using for her. I like [name_f]Valencia[/name_f] but it is the last name of an acquaintance of mine.

@vedettessoir: Shorter names feel more natural on the tongue to me, lol. That’s why I tend to go for them for first names.

1.) It’s not my style, but it’s a perfectly acceptable name. Too fancy for my taste is all.
2.) It’s longer than your other girl names, but I don’t think it really matters. You’re unlikely to have 8 daughters. It doesn’t feel too long next to some of your boy names, like [name_m]Leopold[/name_m].
3.) [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is not common at all! I’ve never met one, and I meet lots of kids as a substitute teacher.

I much prefer [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]… Though I’m biased it’s my daughters middle name! I think it’s spunkier, and sounds better with the names in your sig. [name_f]Clover[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is combo I considered at one stage. I like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] but my personal taste would be to pair it with a name that spices it up a little and gives it a little attitude

  1. I have [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] on my own short list. I generally prefer longer names though. I can’t stand most -tina names, but [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (and [name_f]Faustina[/name_f]) are exceptions.
  2. [name_m]Long[/name_m], yes. But not too long.
  3. Common enough, imo.
