Valor - boy or girl?

I have [name_m]Valor[/name_m] on my GP boys list, but am indecisive whether to move it to my girls list. To me, when spelt [name_m]Valor[/name_m], it looks strong and masculine, but when spoken, it sounds feminine. So, I thought about moving it to my girls list and spelling it [name_f]Vala[/name_f] (this would also indirectly honor my Dad who loves SG1 and [name_f]Vala[/name_f] [name_u]Mal[/name_u] [name_m]Doran[/name_m]). However, I feel that this detracts from the strength and meaning of the name. So, I’ve come to you [name_u]Berry[/name_u] gurus. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_m]Valor[/name_m] suits a boy or girl better?

Neither. Valour is just a word to me.

I thought it was spelt Valour so I guess quite a few people would probably make that mistake. I think knights when I hear it so I would assume male. I think I might has misheard ‘Velour’

Apologies for spelling, typing while feeding

It is in British/Australian etc English but not in US English.

I am aware it is spelt with a u here in the UK, but I think it looks weird spelt that way and less like a name. All I want to know is whether it works better on a boy or a girl, not whether it is spelt correctly.
@norbury - I think it feels knightly as well. One vote for male. Thanks.
Keep the comments coming!

It seems knightly to me too, so I’ll vote boy. I’m American, so I spell the word ‘valor’, but I also think it looks more name-like without the extra ‘u’.

I like [name_m]Valor[/name_m] as a boys virtue name. I never thought I’d like virtue names but [name_m]Valor[/name_m] and [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] are two of my favorites for boys.

As a fellow Gater I think [name_f]Vala[/name_f] would be a cool mn for a girl but if you are up for something a little less obvious you could also go for something like Noir to honor [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] [name_m]Black[/name_m]’s name, choose initials RDA for a son or daughter, or choose mythological names from the series as mn’s. Maybe something Norse for the Asgard. Freyja, [name_m]Thor[/name_m] etc could be really cool.

Honestly, it seems too feminine. It sounds like it is missing something…[name_m]Valor[/name_m] - ee ([name_f]Valerie[/name_f]).
[name_u]Val[/name_u] Kilmer can pull off [name_u]Val[/name_u], but if I were a guy, I wouldn’t want to be called [name_u]Val[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Val[/name_u] on a girl. [name_m]Valor[/name_m] IS better than [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] for a boy…
I suppose that [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] is masculine in some countries, like [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is. However, it is probably best as a middle name.

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] was recently used by a celebrity, [name_m]Emile[/name_m] [name_m]Hirsch[/name_m], for his son and since it’s appearing on several websites and lists for baby boys. It’s increasing in popularity for boys.

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] (I’m Canadian so I’d spell it Valour) seems more masculine to me. Obviously both a boy and girl could have valour (not even sure what the adverb form is!) but I associate the word with knights in medieval times who of course were all men, so it seems like a boys’ name. And if you live in a country where the word is commonly spelled Valour, I’d recommend using the U since it’d probably reduce the confusion/number of misspellings.

I agree, it isn’t really a name for me. But for a name, it definitely sounds masculine to me.

Boy name! [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] is lovely for a girl.

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] strikes me as being a male name.

I don’t pronounce [name_m]Valor[/name_m] & [name_f]Vala[/name_f] the same so I don’t see how [name_m]Valor[/name_m] sounds feminine. As others have mentioned, valor puts me in the mind of knights so it’s masculine

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] nn [name_u]Vale[/name_u]

Being a word name, I think it would work for both genders. I slightly prefer it on a boy, since there are so few usable masculine virtue names, but its similarity to [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Honor[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], etc. make it girly enough.

There’s also [name_f]Valora[/name_f] if you want to make it more feminine.

It sounds decidedly masculine to me, but I like the idea of the quality as a girl’s name…hmm.

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] I would think was a male virtue name. Similar to [name_m]Noble[/name_m]. It would be cool shortened to [name_u]Val[/name_u], like [name_u]Val[/name_u] Kilmer.

[name_m]Valor[/name_m] feels masculine to me, although I think it works for a girl as well.
