Vander or Evander?

Is [name_m]Vander[/name_m] an okay name? Or is it better to stick with [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and use [name_m]Vander[/name_m] as a nn?
What are your thoughts?

I prefer [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and use [name_m]Vander[/name_m] as a nn. If [name_m]Vander[/name_m] was the full name I would worry about ppl confusing it with [name_m]Xander[/name_m].

I agree. I would use it as a nickname for [name_m]Evander[/name_m], because it has a few different nickname possibilities like [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_u]Van[/name_u]. I also think that if his name was [name_m]Vander[/name_m], people may try to shorten it to [name_u]Van[/name_u]. You should go with whatever you like best though! Mixing it up with [name_m]Xander[/name_m] is a pretty minor thing if you like the name a lot!

[name_m]Evander[/name_m]. Handsome, strong, and solid. Very nice name, I like it better than just [name_m]Vander[/name_m], and [name_m]Vander[/name_m] is a nice nn.

I would put [name_m]Evander[/name_m] on his birth certificate.

I’m going to against the grain and say that if you have no intention of ever calling him Evander, just name him Vander.

Other similar names (like Zander/Xander for Alexander) are becoming commonly given names in the their own right. Plus, Evander’s unusual enough that I don’t think that people would necessarily assume that Vander was short for Evander (like they might assume that Sam is short for Samuel or Pete is short for Peter), so I don’t think it would cause confusion.

Edit: one other little thing to add, and don’t let it stop you from using Vander if you love it–depending on your last name, Vander might sound like part of your son’s last name. Especially for Dutch/related names, since “van der” means something like “from” and is a common prefix in last names. For example, I know people with the last names Vanderbilt and van der Berg.

I like [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. I also really like [name_m]Xander[/name_m]/[name_m]Zander[/name_m] but for some reason when I hear [name_m]Vander[/name_m] it sounds like it should be [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. Fine for a nn I think.

I really love [name_m]Evander[/name_m], but if you’re only ever going to call him [name_m]Vander[/name_m] (and insist on others doing so) I’d just put that on the birth certificate. Otherwise [name_m]Evander[/name_m] seems a bit redundant.

I prefer [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. [name_m]Vander[/name_m] looks like part of a last name to me. [name_u]Van[/name_u] der is “of the” in Dutch and since Dutch surnames are super common around here, that’s all I think of.

I like [name_m]Evander[/name_m]

[name_m]Vander[/name_m] sounds very nicknamey and therefore kiddie [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. If someone introduced me to a [name_m]Vander[/name_m] I’d think his name was really [name_m]Evander[/name_m].
