Opinions on [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], please. I’d mostly like to know if its generally considered too dated. I’d also love some nice soft middle ideas to balance out the slight sharpness I feel like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] has. Thanks in advance!

We are considering [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] too. It seems like a “classic” to me, but according to online posts/articles it’s supposedly dated. I hate to group it in with the [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]'s of the 80s and 90s, but fear that may happen. I love that it’s feminine and can easily be pronounced in various romance languages too! We are looking for a name that translates well to Spanish, which can be tough. To me it seems sophisticated and a nice alternative to other V names ([name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] that are more popular). Best of luck!
I really like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] - I don’t consider it dated when people are using names like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f],
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], Wilhelmina & [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]. [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] sounds much more young & vibrant to me. Go for it - It’s pretty & won’t prove too common.

I am always, always a fan of [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]. It’s such a beautiful name. I imagine a sweet little girl playing a garden, adoring flowers and chasing butterflies -not dated at all. 
I think [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] is such an underused, beautiful name! I personally find [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] to be a very soft name, though I could see how it could be seen as sharp. I suppose it could be dated as it was most popular a while ago, but I don’t know any [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]'s and have always thought it was a great name. I support it whole-heartedly!

I love [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]! It’s one of those names with the perfect balance between sweet and strong.
I really like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]. I’m always torn because I do think it’s a little bit 1980’s dated. However, I strongly considered just [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], which seems right on trend, and all of the V names are on trend, not to mention, I think that [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] is a logical next step to the [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f] trends. I think [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] is a name that hit the jackpot in fitting all of the modern trends, and making a comeback when otherwise it would have been too soon. The modern trends outweigh any 1980’s, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
I really think [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] isn’t sharp at all; I’d actually be inclined to pair it with a bolder middle name. But maybe some of the “softer” consonants would appeal to you more, maybe something like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]?
Thanks for the comments. I’m happy to see that [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] wasn’t ever common enough to be unanimously dated. Middles are hard for her though. I like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] a lot!
Though it isn’t used as often these days, I’ve always liked the name Vanessa and I think it’s classic, not dated. Very beautiful, feminine name. As far as naming trends go, they’re pretty cyclical, so what is considered ‘dated’ one moment could be a ‘hot’ name the next. If you love it, go for it!

This is my thread! Lol. I LOVEEEE [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]! I don’t know why, but one day it just popped into my head and I was like “This name is so great”. This is so weird but I always find myself saying it in my head or out loud for some reason… I don’t know why, but it just seems like it has the perfect pronunciation. Honestly I can’t really speak to it being dated - I think the idea of using “dated” names like [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u], [name_f]Danielle[/name_f], [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u], [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], etc. on a modern baby is so cute.
My name is [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] (from the 80’s)! I love my name. I love the fact that it is a butterfly genus! And that you don’t hear it everyday. I get a kick out of meeting other [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]'s…we’re a special club. Last weekend at the [name_u]Red[/name_u] Sox game they had birth announcements on the score board and one of the babies was a [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]! We’re making a comeback! So I don’t think it’s considered dated, not with names like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] coming back. Go with your gut…if you love it go with it!

It’s not dated at all!
It does sound 80’s/90’s/dated to me. I don’t love it, but I certainly wouldn’t side eye it.

I love, love [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Annabella[/name_f] especially for the butterfly connection, but [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] is my little sisters name. At least if I ever have my little [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] she’ll have a subtle connection with her auntie!
It’s been renewed and gained a more attractive and beautiful vibe to me with the advent of the [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_u]Green[/name_u] character from “[name_u]Penny[/name_u] Dreadful”. AMAZING. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f].
The [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] I grew up with was very artistic and free-spirited, so that’s how I see it. It isn’t terribly dated for me, even though it peaked in the 80s-90s, because:
- it never was at the top of the charts, so I don’t know dozens of 30-year-old [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]'s.
- it fits in with some of the more feminine 80s names, like [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]. Those all feel more classic to me than those names that only existed rarely before the 70s or so, like [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] or [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f].
Totally usable, and [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] and [name_f]Nessie[/name_f] are great nickname options.
