My husband and I chose a name for our baby in the beginning of [name]April[/name]. We are due at the end of [name]August[/name]. My sister-in-law is due [name]August[/name] 5th. I decided that we should make sure our names were different because we both like Bible names. It turns out that we chose the same name: [name]LYDIA[/name].
Now I am looking for ways to change the name so that we can still use some form of [name]Lydia[/name]. Example: Lidianna. Any suggestions? It could be a double name like Lydialyn or something. Help!
My niece is [name]Lydia[/name] and it’s such an adorable name! Other variations could be…
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Liliana[/name]
[name]Luda[/name]
[name]Leda[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Leela[/name]
[name]Lolita[/name]
[name]Lilith[/name]
[name]Lilibeth[/name]
[name]Love[/name] [name]Lydia[/name]! I nearly named my car [name]Lydia[/name] (she is such a Liddy!), but she was so not a [name]Lydia[/name]. So I opted for [name]Elodie[/name] nn Liddy. Maybe use a name that can yield the nn Liddy? Like [name]Elodie[/name]? Or something like [name]Lilia[/name] or [name]Livia[/name]? or something similar to those, like [name]Liliana[/name]/[name]Lillian[/name], or [name]Olivia[/name]/[name]Olive[/name]? Although those don’t really have Bible connections to them. There’s the French form, [name]Lydie[/name], but I think that’s probably too close to [name]Lydia[/name].
Good luck!
Have you discussed your conundrum with your sister in law? You obviously feel very connected with this name. In all your posts, you can just tell that [name]Lydia[/name] is THE name. Why do you have to be the one to give in and give up your name? If you love it this much, I would talk to her. Perhaps she has more than one name she loves. And I hate to suggest this, because I don’t know if I could do it, but would it be the end of the world if you both used the name? Who knows, it could end up being a funny family thing. Probably not, but I have a few different cousins with the same name. Granted, there are 50 something first cousins and it was bound to happen, but still. I really feel for you and hate for you to have to compromise.
I agree with the above poster about talking things through with your sister-in-law.
The thing with [name]Lydia[/name] is that it’s perfect as is, and it’s one of those names really WITHOUT variants, nicknames, etc. So it would be hard to keep a version of it if you decide to give it up. If you feel you can’t use it, you might as well start over…
[name]Livia[/name]/[name]Lavinia[/name] are the only names that give me a similar vibe.
I agree that you should talk things over with your sister-in-law, though, if that was the name you had your heart set on. It really is lovely, and I don’t see cousins sharing the same name as something strange or unacceptable - one of them can just go by Liddy within the extended family.
It’s a further stretch than names previously mentioned, but I always thought [name]Eliora[/name] had a similar lyrical flow that [name]Lydia[/name] is known for. It’s a far stretch, but you could get Liddy out of it if you really wanted to, especially if her middle name starts with a D. Another name I can see as an alternative melodic name is [name]Elowen[/name], but I don’t really think you can get any [name]Lydia[/name]-related perks from it.
I agree with pps, talk it over and see what happens. Maybe she’s willing to compromise, like one person uses it as a first name, and the other one puts [name]Lydia[/name] in the middle spot, and calls her daughter by her middle name.
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]-[name]Anne[/name] (or some other double/hyphenate name involving [name]Lydia[/name])
Alidia
[name]Lida[/name]
Definitely have a talk with your [name]SIL[/name]. I think [name]Lydia[/name] is awesome. It puts me in mind of a few other non-[name]Lydia[/name] names you might like:
[name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Sabine[/name]
Merit
[name]Marielle[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]
Another [name]Berry[/name] found [name]Vivia[/name] in her family tree. It’s beautiful I think and has the same flow as [name]Lydia[/name].
