Recently, I’ve really been loving the sound of the name [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], but I really hate this spelling. It looks like ‘[name_u]Michael[/name_u]-uh’ too me. I prefer the spelling MicKayla, but my sister tells me she thinks this spelling is trailer trashy.
What are your favorite ways to spell [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] (pronounced ‘mi-[name_u]Kay[/name_u]-luh’ for anyone who is wondering)? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that MicKayla us useable? What about [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f], or [name_f]Makela[/name_f]?
Hate to say it, but all alternate spellings look truly awful to me.
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] looks lovely, and more importantly, like her parents know how to spell.
I think a lot of people think a creative spelling makes name more unique or pretty, but most the time, for me, it just makes me think the parents couldn’t be bothered to learn to spell properly.
MicKayla looks so weird. It looks like a misspelling. And the capital M and capital K look, well, trashy and uneducated. [name_f]Makela[/name_f] will get you “mah-KEE-lah” so I wouldn’t recommend it.
[name_f]Micayla[/name_f], [name_f]Makaila[/name_f], [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f], [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]. Really [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] is the most phonetically straightforward, while retaining the reference to [name_u]Michael[/name_u], in the fact that it begins with Mi- Also, [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is the standard spelling so even though it looks like [name_u]Michael[/name_u]-uh it is reliably understood by most English speakers as mih-[name_u]KAY[/name_u]-lah. It’s also the most efficient, easy way to ensure correct spelling of her name by everyone she meets in her lifetime: “It’s spelled [name_u]Michael[/name_u] with an a at the end.”
[name_m]Just[/name_m] keep it simple. There is nothing to gain from a spelling that is super-unusual, except the lifetime hassle of people constantly misspelling your child’s name because you picked a weird spelling to begin with.
I think [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is by far the most beautiful spelling, and all the others are trendy imitations-- not to mention a total pain in the a** to spell out to people over & over again. ([name_m]Trust[/name_m] me on this, I have personal experience with it.)
[name_f]Mikaela[/name_f] is a traditional spelling for it in Scandinavian languages and the only other one that looks okay to my eye. The others…as someone who also has a “trendeigh” spelling of a popular name, and dislike it-- I have empathy.
I really encourage you to consider sticking with the classic [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], or maybe [name_f]Mikaela[/name_f].
Whatever you do, don’t use a “Mc-” prefix! That makes it seem like [name_m]McDonald[/name_m]'s or McMansions. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time your daughter’s resume hits the top of a pile, she’ll be judged. No no no!
Besides [name_f]Mikaela[/name_f] (Swedish/Nordic), [name_f]Mikhaila[/name_f] is also a traditional Russian spelling. If you have Slavic heritage, that could fly. Still a pain to spell, but at least it’s not purposefully mispelled.
Another classic spelling is [name_f]Micaela[/name_f]. That’s the Spanish/Italian/Portuguese spelling.
It’s a pain in the butt to constantly spell to everyone who asks. [name_f]Micheala[/name_f] is the spelling that’s the most beautiful and should be used if you’re going to use this name at all.
MicKayla is trailer trashy and please, PLEASE do not use this spelling. [name_m]How[/name_m] embarrassing would it be for the child to have this… Ugh. Stick with [name_f]Micheala[/name_f], [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] (easy to spell), or [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]. (easy to spell and straightforward like another berry mentioned)
I know a [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] and this is my favourite way to spell it. I love the “aela” letter sequence. I think this way is classy and elegant while MicKayla does look trashier. The [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] I know whenever she has to spell her name just says “it’s [name_u]Michael[/name_u] with an A”. No one ever pronounces it incorrectly. If you absolutely HATE [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], then I would go with [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]/[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]. No capital letters in the middle of the name. But, [name_f]IMO[/name_f], [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is the right spelling.
