Hello! I’m new here😀 I’m due in [name_u]July[/name_u] with a baby girl. I pretty sure her name will be [name_f]Veda[/name_f] [name_f]Charlize[/name_f]. I’m just torn on the spelling for these reasons:
I fell in love with the name because of the character on the movie My Girl. She spelled it [name_f]Vada[/name_f]. Would you use that spelling if that was the case?
The Vedas are Hindu religious transcripts. As a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] I kind of feel weird about using such a religious name that has nothing to do with my own. I do like that it means knowledge/wisdom in Sanskrit though.
I also feel like both of those spellings will be mispronounced quite often. [name_f]Veda[/name_f] as Vee-da and [name_f]Vada[/name_f] as Vah-da. I’m thinking adding a y would solve this. Veyda maybe?
What do y’all think? Thank you for helping me get some peace of mind!
I prefer [name_f]Veda[/name_f], but in your case I would go with the [name_f]Vada[/name_f] spelling if the religious ties squick you out a bit. I think both spellings are well known enough that they would rarely get mispronounced.
I’m not a fan of Veyda, it looks kind of off to me.
I think you should keep it simple with the [name_f]Vada[/name_f] spelling! It’s [name_f]Ada[/name_f] with a V. I think [name_f]Veda[/name_f] is actually less intuitive for English speakers - it could be mispronounced “VEE-da” (like [name_f]Vita[/name_f], rhyming with [name_f]Leda[/name_f] or [name_f]Theda[/name_f]) or even “VEH-da.” I suppose [name_f]Vada[/name_f] could be “VAH-da” or “Vadda,” but people know to pronounce [name_f]Jada[/name_f] as “[name_u]JAY[/name_u]-da,” cicada as “si-[name_u]KAY[/name_u]-da,” (Darth) Vader as “VAY-der,” etc.
I had a friend named [name_f]Veda[/name_f], pronounced Vee-da, so I vote [name_f]Vada[/name_f] for the pronunciation you want. I guess spelling it Vayda or Vaeda or Vaida could help people.
[name_f]Veda[/name_f]/[name_f]Vada[/name_f] is so cute! I would go with [name_f]Vada[/name_f] because I think it is the most straightforward spelling and pronunciation and doesn’t have the religious ties.
Thank y’all! I wish [name_f]Veda[/name_f] didn’t bother me because I think it’s the prettiest of them. Does anyone know if these Vedas are to Hindus like the equivalent of what the Bible would be to me?
If you prefer [name_f]Veda[/name_f], then I think you shouldn’t let the religious connotations prevent you from using your preferred spelling! I’m not a scholar of comparative world religions or anything, but I don’t think the Vedas are equivalent to the Bible. They are sacred texts of Hinduism, the most famous of which is the [name_m]Rig[/name_m]-[name_f]Veda[/name_f], but not THE sacred texts since there are also the Upanishads, the Bhagavad [name_f]Gita[/name_f] and other scriptures. Ayurveda is “an ancient Hindu medical treatise on the art of healing and prolonging life, sometimes regarded as a fifth [name_f]Veda[/name_f],” and a source of Ayurvedic medicine. I would guess the Vedas are more comparable to the Psalms, but you might want to consult someone who is Hindu for an accurate analysis!
