Yesterday, I took my niece and nephews to go see “Wreck-It [name]Ralph[/name]”. It was a wonderful movie, but I have to say the thing I probably loved most about it was the main female character’s name: Vanellope (pronounced kind of like [name]Penelope[/name] with a “V”) [name]Von[/name] Schweetz. Now, to be clear, I personally would never name my baby Vanellope (maybe a pet). It was made up for the movie, and thus would be forever tied to the movie. However, I do think it is rather charming for a made-up name. [name]Penelope[/name] is one of my all-time favorites, and I tend to love names that start with “V”. (I think it would look better spelled Venelope, though.)
Anyway, I was just wondering, what do y’all think about the name? Would you ever consider using it yourself? Like to see it on somebody else’s baby? Think it is a quirky, cool twist on [name]Penelope[/name] or just horrible beyond words?
I believe her name is intended to be spelled “Vanellope” since it is a smoosh of Vanilla and [name]Penelope[/name].
The names were also intended to be the most nausea-inducing, sugary sweet names possible. (All except poor Candlehead), so that’s exactly the feeling I get from Vanellope. It is way too sweet for me.
I thought the same thing as I was watching the film, though. I really liked her name for the character. Or maybe a pet rabbit or something…
I would not want to see this on my child, or anyone else’s.
Oh, you’re right, it is Vanellope, not Venellope. edits I still rather like the idea of Venelope, though…even if it does kind of look like a misspelling of “envelope”. (And, yes, just for a pet!)
I agree with this! I honestly don’t think it’s that bad of a name; but I think the only person who can really pull it off is Ms. [name]Von[/name] Schweetz herself.
Anyway, I loved the name for the character. It really fit her personality and I thought it was sweet but I would never consider it. After watching the movie I actually thought of the possibility that people would use it instead of using [name]Penelope[/name] to be more unique. It may happen.
Wasn’t there also a character named Rancis or something? I was thinking of [name]Francis[/name] the whole time. Hopefully no-one uses that.
I loved the film and I would consider naming my child this name but the partner wouldn’t as the name would forever be tied to the movie as it is where it originated. I dislike the spelling Vanellope but I love it spelled Venelope or Venellope. I would love to see it used.
Having answered the phone at home growing up for my mother [name]Penelope[/name] and hearing how hard it was for telemarketers to get her name right with thousands of years of established use, an invented name like this one is a train wreck waiting to happen. [name]Don[/name]'t ever even think of trying this one.
I actually really like Vanellope, but agree with the idea of spelling it Venelope! I like the way it sounds, flows, feels. It’s adorable. I think it would take more nerve than I have to name a child Venelope though =/
i am actually naming my daughter Vanellope. Me and my husband watched the movie and fell in love with the little girl. We both looked at each other and said thats our baby girl’s name.she’s due in august and we just can’t wait to meet her. i know a lot of friends and family asked how you say it when they just read it but they like it and since my name is vanessa they thought it was cute that her name has vane in it like me. i hadnt thought of that till they said it but i just know her name will suit her well. shes our vanilla cupcake lol
