Out here with thoughts and opinions and ideas, as my husband randomly showed interest in the name Verlainne, which neither of us have really heard before.
He didn’t express interest in it as a baby name per se, but after we met someone with the name he said ‘Wow that is a cool name’ and I had to latch onto that because he doesn’t express interest in like ANY names.
I’d never heard of it, and the name is most definitely from an older generation. It isn’t on nameberry, but on a few other sites.
What are thoughts of this? I can’t say I’m in LOVE with it but I do like it, and I’m interested in other spellings or variations or similar names! Hit me nameberry!!!
I’d never heard of the name Verlainne! It’s a unique and intriguing choice, though, so while it’s not my personal style, I can see why someone would like it! Is it pronounced ver-layne? I think there’s a variation spelling with only one n- Verlaine. That one seems a bit more straightforward to me.
Yea I agree, I think I would prefer a single n verses two.
It’s intriguing! As a name, apparently it started being used in honour of [name_f]French[/name_f] poet, [name_m]Paul[/name_m] Verlaine -but the name itself is a place name, of a place in Belgium.
Some similar names could be:
[name_f]Violaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verna[/name_f]
[name_f]Marjolaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verona[/name_f]
[name_m]Valentine[/name_m] / [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
It would make an unexpected (and lovely) choice for sure. However, I would spell it [name_f]Verlaine[/name_f], as in the Belgian municipality and [name_m]Paul[/name_m] [name_f]Verlaine[/name_f].
Similar names (seconding @Greyblue’s suggestions, by the way!):
[name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verlie[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Charmaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verina[/name_f]
[name_f]Vianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Verbena[/name_f]
Roselaine
[name_f]Igraine[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Veerle[/name_f]
[name_f]Madelaine[/name_f]
I rather like it but I’ve only ever seen the [name_f]Verlaine[/name_f] iteration already mentioned!
It would take some getting used to but I do think it’s smart and pretty sounding (almost Verr-lenne). There is though some chat online that it would “only” be a last name in France - I guess akin to using though, Auden, Marlowe or Keats - but for Paul Verlaine himself being, apparently, an often awful human. This may not matter much if not you’re not in France nor a Francophile.
In addition to the fab suggestions above, names you both might agree on:
