I’d love to hear your thoughts on [name_m]Victor[/name_m].
What kind of style would you label [name_m]Victor[/name_m] as? Vintage, timeless, dated, modern, etc.?
What does [name_m]Victor[/name_m] reminds you off? Many say it sounds harsh, what do you think?
And if you had to write a story about [name_m]Victor[/name_m], where and when would you set it? Where would [name_m]Victor[/name_m] be at home and in which century/decade would he live? [name_m]How[/name_m] old is he?
I think of [name_m]Victor[/name_m] as a vintage name that’s also relatively timeless. I know two Victors (one goes by [name_u]Vic[/name_u]) that are in their late 20s early 30s and they are both nice, friendly guys. That aside, the name still conjures an image of a nice old man in slippers and a thick sweater to me… I’m not sure why. [name_u]Vic[/name_u] seems more youthful to me.
I don’t think the names sounds harsh at all. It’s certainly very masculine but I don’t find it unpleasant.
I’d call it Vintage, its not a favorite of mine as its quite popular and sounds a bit like vicar to me. (More tea, Vicar , I mean [name_m]Victor[/name_m]?) lol
@meganleda Isn’t it in your signature though?
When I say it, maybe the -r at the end isn’t properly pronounced but I definitely say it with an -o so it doesn’t make me think of vicar at all.
There’s a [name_m]Victor[/name_m] at my work and I’d guess he’s in his 30s. I don’t dislike the name but I get a much nicer vibe from [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].
As far as fictional characters go, in the UK the name is most associated with [name_m]Victor[/name_m] Meldrew, a very grumpy old man in a 1990s sitcom. He was always outraged by some little thing and his famous catchphrase was “I don’t believe it!” I think that’s the first person that comes to my mind for that name.
Yes it is! I put my husband’s favorites in my sig as well He quite likes [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. I have an American accent and pronounce it Vik-ter heavy on the Er.
[name_m]Victor[/name_m] is very outdated. I picture an old man, [name_m]French[/name_m], smoking a cigar. Sometime in the olden days but not sure what era I’m thinking off. Not something I’d use on a child, unless if maybe you live in [name_f]France[/name_f]
I think [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is pretty timeless, bordering on vintage but I’d put it more in the category of “underused classic”. Definitely ripe for a comeback. Personally it’s one of those “fit-in, stand-out” names where it doesn’t sound too out of place with all the boys being named [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_m]Connor[/name_m], [name_m]Breaker[/name_m], etc. but it isn’t common or same-old same-old. I’d love to meet a little [name_m]Victor[/name_m].
Well my association is different than everyone else’s because my husband is named [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. He is 25 years old, dark hair, dark eyes. He is from Mexico. I actually don’t think I have met a White [name_m]Victor[/name_m], only Hispanic. To me, the name is very masculine and not an old man name at all. He is only ever called [name_u]Vic[/name_u] at work, but I don’t like that as much as [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. I would possibly use [name_m]Victor[/name_m] as a middle name for a son.
I quite like it. I couldn’t use it because [name_m]Victor[/name_m] is the name of a very popular holiday destination close to us, but it’s a good name.
My almost 4 year old son is named [name_m]Victor[/name_m]! We wanted something with history but not common, something internationally used, something strong but not macho, with a nickname we liked. [name_m]Victor[/name_m] fit the bill!
(hey long time)… anywho…
[name_m]Victor[/name_m] is always going to be on my boys list. My [name_f]MIL[/name_f] was [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and I’ve never liked [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] but my DH was very close to his mother so [name_m]Victor[/name_m] seems like a great way to honor her.
I actually really like [name_m]Victor[/name_m] because:
- it’s strong, decisive
- it’s incredibly international and easy to pronounce for many people from many cultures.
- it’s got a bit a whimsy just by being a word/virtue name.
- it’s classic yet modern
- bonus: You could use [name_m]Thor[/name_m] as a nn. (Well at least in [name_m]German[/name_m]!)
Thank you all so much, I wasn’t quite sure what vibe/style he had to me, but I like the classic, strong & a bit of vintageness vibe that got mentioned a few times here, I think that’s how I saw him in the first place but I wanted to hear what everybody else thought.
@lexiem one doens’t catch you very often on here, but hey, congratulations, I’m already looking forward to your name choice!
To me it’s classic more then vintage, but not overtly popular. I really like it. I have a cousin with this name, named after his father (who passed away 4 years ago). To me I do see an older man with this, as well as a young boy. It’ll age well. I think it may be more popular in Spanish speaking communities though. I’m Puerto Rican through my mothers side and that’s where the name comes from.
Thanks! I’d wager I’ll be around a bit more often for the next 9 months or so… <wink>
