I love my villains. They’re extremely fun to write and I enjoy giving them names. I don’t usually struggle, but for some reason, I can’t seem to name one in particular.
The book is titled “If The Slipper Fits”. It’s a fractured fairytale in which I break the stories of Cinderella and The Pied Piper Of Hamlin and smash the broken pieces together (so fun). Some of my character names are Ella (of course), Arabella, Beatrice, and Wren.
Now, we return to our character of focus. He’s the mayor of Hamlin, a town overrun by rats. But, it gets worse. The rats brought a plague with them, infecting the people rapidly, mostly by biting them. It gets to the point where most of the adults have been bitten. I won’t get into the details of the disease here, but it’s bad.
The mayor isn’t doing much to help and it’s because… he brought the rats there. He isn’t even a human at all. He’s a large humanoid rat creature with strong magic. The name he’d been going by was fake. When he drops his mask, he’s one of my creepiest villains. Amongst other things, he has the ability to give people terrifying nightmares and infiltrate their dreams.
I’ve been calling him The Rat King. But he needs a name. A name that completely embodies his creepiness. And I’ve been struggling to find one. I was wondering what names you all think might fit him?
Edit: I’ve found a few names that I think could work, so I’m going to add a poll to see which ones get the most votes. Please also feel free to continue to add any suggestions that you have too, though. Nothing’s set in stone until it clicks.
- Woldemar (too close to Voldemort?)
- Romar
- Umar (the meaning isn’t ideal)
- Larmar (not sure if the sound works)
- Odomar (again, the meaning isn’t ideal)
- Othmar (yet again, the meaning isn’t ideal)
- Baldomar (too close to Voldemort?)
