Viola Pronunciation

I just love the name [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. But I’ve fallen in love with the pronunciation of Vye-luh or Vy-la. Has anybody else heard it said that way? A blogger I follow who lives in [name_u]London[/name_u] has a daughter named [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and they pronounce it that way. Thoughts?

I’ve only ever met one [name_f]Viola[/name_f], her parents called her Vee-AW-lah

You mean VY-uh-lah in contrast to the more usual vy-OH-lah or vee-OH-lah?
(I’m assuming that’s what you mean)

I know the actress [name_f]Megan[/name_f] Hilty has a daugther [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and she pronounces it VY-uh-lah, which I hadn’t heard before, but I do find it very pretty. I think the problem is that most people will pronounce it wrong (at least at first), so you gotta take that into consideration.

The only time ever heard [name_f]Viola[/name_f] pronounced it was “[name_f]Vi[/name_f]-oh-lah”. If I heard someone say “Vy-la” I would think they said “Wyla”.

vee-oh-la or vye-oh-la is how I pronounce it.

I pronounce [name_f]Viola[/name_f] similar to you. It’s basically “Vye- OH -la” but sped up to sound like “Vy-uh-la”.
From what I understand, “Vee-OH-la” is the instrument and “Vye-OH-la” is the name.

I’ve known one person named [name_f]Viola[/name_f]–she is Italian and pronounces it Vee-oh-la.

This name’s pronunciation is fascinating to me. I’ve only ever heard VY-oh-la (or VY-uh-la, usually something somewhere in between the two vowel sounds) in [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], but I’ve only met people named vy-OH-la.

I agree with roseofjune, having played the viola in elementary school (veeh-ol-la) and later knowing a woman named [name_f]Viola[/name_f], pronounced Vy-Oh-La.

I’m not sure about the 2 syllables part, but the majority of people tend to say Vy-oh-luh , from what I’ve seen, so I don’t think it’s too much of an issue. Personally I love (but only love) the Vee-oh-luh pronunciation, but that doesn’t seem as common.

I pronounce it vee-oh-la or vye-oh, depending on which language I’m speaking it in.

I think it’d be fine to pronounce it however you want, but you’d probably have to correct everyone at least at first since that’s not a common pronunciation. I personally say “vee-oh-la” or “vy-oh-la”.

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] (Vye-oh-lah) was my great grandmothers name
