Viola

What do you think of the name [name_f]Viola[/name_f]? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it?

Thanks!

I would pronounce it [name_f]Vi[/name_f] (rhymes with eye) oh la. I like it, I’ve tried to really like it as an alternative to [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but I just can’t get there.

I pronounce it like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] with an -a instead of -et at the end:) I much prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is still a good name.

Here at home we pronounce it [name_f]Vi[/name_f]-OH-la.
I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] appealed to me because it felt like a very strong, very elegant name. Not once did I consider the soft and whispery [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for my hard-kicking daughter! Although she is shy and very much an introvert, my baby girl loves her name and usually goes by [name_f]Ola[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f], she’s not a huge fan of V or [name_f]Vivi[/name_f].

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] is the kind of name that either you love or simply don’t like, I think that compared to the on-trend more soft names for girls, like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] it’s probably too harsh sounding, in my opinion, in the style of my beloved names [name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_f]Olga[/name_f], [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] and [name_f]Berenice[/name_f].

vye-OH-la

I don’t like it for some reason. Maybe because I think of a musical instrument.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. I pronounce it [name_f]Vi[/name_f]-OH-la or Vee-Oh-la, depending on the languages I speak. I’d add [name_f]Viola[/name_f] to my list in a heartbeat, if only I don’t already have [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] there.

I adore it, but only pronounced as Vee-OH-luh. I think (that pronunciation) is really beautiful, without the slight vile sound of Vy-oh-luh, so it surprises me how many people tend not to like it. I’ve been a bit iffy on it recently after finding out it is, or is simila,r to the word for ‘rape’ or ‘violate’ in several languages, but I still think it’s gorgeous. I really like how unusual it is, whilst also sounding beautiful with a nice meaning, and musical and flower associations. A wonderful name in my opinion!

I pronounce it Vee-oh-la…which I’m thinking must be wrong bc everyone else says differently?
I like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] better personally.

Oh no! I didn’t even thinking of the word viola. It definitely just dropped way down my list.

You’re not pronouncing anything wrong! You’ve just used the pronunciation most commonly associated with the instrument and even that varies with accents and the language being spoken.

[name_f]Ola[/name_f] is an adorable nickname for [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! I definitely agree with you that it’s a love it or leave it sort of name.

I absolutely adore this name but we took it off our list because I know people will struggle to pronounce it. I would pronounce it Vye-ola.

I think it’s beautiful. I pronounce it VY-oh-la, with the emphasis on VY and not OH like most people. The way it’s pronounced in [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] in [name_u]Love[/name_u], for example.

I think Vee-oh-la sounds more European and pretty, but I’ve always heard this name pronounced Vye-o-la. My great aunt went by [name_f]Vi[/name_f].
