Violet: 2 syllables or 3 ?

I’m guessing 3 syllables is the more proper pronunciation (which my husband says), but I tend to say it with just 2.

This is our top pick for baby on the way. It would be good to pick one way of saying it. Ha.

3 sounds too much like Violence

I say it with two syllables. I don’t know anyone (at least where I live) who would say it with three.

I say it with two.

I prefer the 2 Syllables also. My husband I think is just saying it how he reads it, more literally. So I was curious if there was some origin reference to how it’s spelled.

I say it with two!

I say [name]Violet[/name] with 2 (vi-let), [name]Violette[/name] with 3 (vee-oh-let)!

I say it with 3–the second syllable is very subtle. My husband says 2 1/2, for what it’s worth.

I say it with 2. I’ve never heard anyone really enunciate the o in it to make 3.

Technically, it is 3. If I was using the noun… like that colour is… or that flower is… I don’t think twice. But a proper noun… hahaha. This definitely gave me pause because for whatever reason, it never occurred to me to pronounce the name [name]Violet[/name] as anything more than Vy-let. I think it’s the influence of TV on names… realise that we probably don’t hear someone introducing herself as [name]Vi[/name]-uh-let on TV.

However, I have a solution to do away with any doubt-- use [name]Violette[/name]. As Lineska says, that is Vee-oh-let… 3 syllables for sure. No two ways about it.

Like [name]Hilary[/name]'s husband, I say 2 1/2.

I agree that technical it 3 syllables, However I say [name]Vi[/name]-let with 2.

I say it with two: VIE-let. When I see it written, in my head sometimes I say vie-ah-let, but mostly it’s just two.

Good luck! [name]Love[/name] your pick, btw.

I’m also on the 2 train. It’s always the way I hear it.

I say Vy-let.

I agree with the 2 1/2  I say it with a super subtle “uh” as the second syllable.

I did a true LOL on “the 2 train”. “chooo chooo”! Something I would SO say. Thanks for the ha-ha.

Same- I say [name]Via[/name] -Let

But the [name]Via[/name] part is really 2 but said so fast it sounds like 1.

I say it with 2, but I can see it being kind of 2.5.

Picture me walking around the house testing these outloud ALL day today…

  1. Vy-let 2. [name]Via[/name]-let 3. [name]Vi[/name]-o-let

“Vy-let, share with your sister [name]Silvia[/name].”
“[name]Via[/name]-let, no pulling the dog’s tail.”
“[name]Vi[/name]-o-let, time for a bath.”

I think I’ve confidently canceled out the last “[name]Vi[/name]-o-let” option. I believe the first “Vy-let” is sticking more, but will have to keep saying it outloud like a crazy to make sure.

Thanks for all the insight!
