[name]Just[/name] looking for general thoughts on the names [name]Virginia[/name] and [name]Regina[/name], they’re very interesting to me lately Any/all comments welcome. I’m in the UK, if that’s relevant.
[name]Virginia[/name] is okay but I definitely [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Regina[/name] It means [name]Queen[/name] which is quite a regal meaning for a little girl. On top of that I love the nick name choices such as [name]Reg[/name], [name]Reggie[/name], [name]Gina[/name], [name]Gia[/name], [name]Rea[/name], [name]Ren[/name] <333333
I think both names are pretty but I prefer [name]Regina[/name]. I once knew a woman named [name]Regina[/name] (she was Greek and pronounced it “reh-JEEN-ah”). I think this pronunciation would be less troublesome. The other one (reh-JYE-nah) reminds me of a part of the female anatomy.
Call me immature but I don’t like [name]Regina[/name] for the reason noted by PP. There is Regine (French, like the singer from Arcade [name]Fire[/name]) which I think is prettier. [name]Virginia[/name] is cute, but do you like nn [name]Ginny[/name]?
Does anyone ever actually pronounce [name]Regina[/name] like reh-JYE-nah? I mean, that’s the obvious issue but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say it like that … I have to say, Regine is also rather nice
As for [name]Virginia[/name] … can’t say I love [name]Ginny[/name], or even like it. That’s a definite drawback.
I like [name]Virginia[/name] AND [name]Regina[/name] but would probably never use either. I would probably rate [name]Virginia[/name] a little higher and I do prefer Regine to [name]Regina[/name]. ([name]Don[/name]'t really care for -ina endings as a general rule…) Would you pronounce it reh-[name]JEAN[/name] or reh-ZHEEN though in an English-speaking country? Hmm!
I have never heard it pronounced reh-JYE-nah…? That seems silly. My [name]German[/name] neighbor pronounces her name reh-GHEE-neh. (ghee as in old geezer)
[name]Genevie[/name] - People absolutely pronounce [name]Regina[/name] like reh-JYE-nah. Specfically - Canadians. [name]Regina[/name] is the capital of Saskatchewan and that is how it’s pronounced. So I imagine that most Canadians would pronounce a girl’s name that way since they would be most familiar with the city name. That’s why I had to comment on this thread. I dated a Canadian and whenever people asked me what part of [name]Canada[/name] he was from, the answer would always illicit a snicker (regardless of the asker’s age or gender, seriously).
I have always like [name]Virginia[/name], but now that I know how horribly [name]Regina[/name] can be pronounced by some, I personally wouldn’t use it.
I do not like [name]Regina[/name]. It’s very dated. I love [name]Virginia[/name].
@clover - yes, you’re quite right. [name]Regina[/name], Saskatchewan is pronounced “reh-JYE-nah” by Canadians. If I’m not mistaken, the [name]Queen[/name] of [name]England[/name] is [name]Elizabeth[/name] R or [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Regina[/name] and it’s pronounced the same way.
I much prefer [name]Virginia[/name] which I think is so much prettier than [name]Regina[/name]. I’ve always had a weird hatred for that name. I guess I just hate the sound. I’ve never heard of the “reh-JYE-nah” pronunciation which personally I think sounds awful, so that puts me off the name even more. If you don’t like the nickname [name]Ginny[/name] for [name]Virginia[/name] though, that could be a problem too. [name]Virginia[/name] is a name best suited to be used as it is.
I love the name [name]Regina[/name]! It’s always been on my long list of favorites. [name]Virginia[/name] is still sounds very old lady-ish to me (in an unappealing way)
I’ve also heard [name]Regina[/name] pronounced “ruh-JYE-nah” usually as a joke. [name]Regina[/name] seems dated to me and reminds me of Mean Girls. [name]Virginia[/name] is too frilly for my taste, but it’s still a nice name.
[name]How[/name] about [name]Genevra[/name]?
I guess the reh-JYE-nah pronunciation is inevitable when it comes to teasing in pre-teen years, but I really do like the name [name]Regina[/name]. I love the meaning too, and the similarity to [name]Reign[/name] which was once a guilty pleasure of mine. I might consider it as a middle name, or Regine. I do love Mean Girls too
As for [name]Virginia[/name], I really do like it, but I can’t see myself using it. One of those ones I’d love to see on someone elses child.
[name]Genevra[/name]/[name]Ginevra[/name] really isn’t for me, since my name is (well, will be) [name]Genevieve[/name] - way too similar for me! Plus I’m really not keen on [name]Ginny[/name] as a nickname, and that’s inevitable. I blame the ever-irritating [name]Ginny[/name] Weasley
Keep the opinions coming!
I really like [name]Virginia[/name], it’s a very beautiful name. I also love the nickname [name]Ginny[/name]! I’m not crazy about [name]Regina[/name], I don’t hate it but I would never use it. I like the previously mentioned Regine though, that’s a name I hadn’t really thought of before.
I think [name]Virginia[/name] is just as prone to teasing as [name]Regina[/name]. Sad because they are pretty names.
I love both. Prefer [name]Virginia[/name] just because love the nn’s
[name]Ginny[/name] and [name]Ginger[/name].
I agree about [name]VIRGINia[/name]'s teasing potential. Of course, most (if not all) names could be twisted into something teasable. I think certain names are a bit too prone for me though, particularly ones that encourage the sexual teasing - Virgin ([name]Virginia[/name]), Vagina ([name]Regina[/name]), [name]Dick[/name] ([name]Dick[/name]) etc - as I imagine those would be the most embarrassing and difficult to deal with for a child.
I knew a [name]Virginia[/name] once and she didn’t have too much trouble with teasing, though I don’t doubt it could easily happen. I’m Canadian so I automatically pronounce [name]Regina[/name] as Reh-JYE-nah, which would be a problem, but if it would be reh-[name]JEAN[/name]-a or reh-ZHEEN-a, I think it’d be okay. Have you consider [name]Reina[/name]/[name]Reyna[/name], which has the same meaning and a similar look/sound without the obvious teasing potential?
I have been pondering [name]Regina[/name] lately. We are [name]Roman[/name] Catholic and we [name]Regina[/name] is considered a [name]Marian[/name] name, since [name]Mary[/name] is the “queen of heaven”. I like the nn [name]Ginny[/name], as well, so this could be on our list.
[name]Virginia[/name] is a beautiful name, but for me to use it, I would feel the need to have some connection to the state, or at least have it be a family name.
