I actually don’t care for virtue names, but there are some that I like. I like the ones that don’t scream “virtue name!” to me. Those are [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Constance[/name], [name]Bliss[/name], and [name]Honor[/name].
I definitely don’t care for are:
[name]Faith[/name]
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Serenity[/name]
[name]Harmony[/name]
[name]Destiny[/name]
[name]Chastity[/name]
I don’t know exactly why I like some and not others, but I think the ones that I like don’t scream the “typical” virtue names to me.
That’s true, some virtue names are easy to pass over. I don’t care for [name]Serenity[/name], [name]Destiny[/name], or [name]Chastity[/name] either; they seem pretty cheesy now. But I do like [name]Faith[/name], a bit less so [name]Hope[/name]. One I don’t like is [name]Joy[/name]…it’s bland and old-lady to me.
[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Patience[/name] is usable?
I think my tops are [name]Felicity[/name] and [name]Grace[/name]. I also like [name]Esperanza[/name] and [name]Vera[/name], if you count those, and I like [name]Hope[/name] as a middle name.
I like [name]Patience[/name], and I think it’s completely usable. Although, I’m not sure that I really like the “sh” sound in the middle of it. That’s just my opinion.
I was talking to my second cousin the other day, she’s in high school, and she mentioned a friend named [name]Patience[/name]. I was pleasantly surprised! I might not have thought [name]Patience[/name] was usuable until then, talking about a teenager named [name]Patience[/name]. It was really refreshing and unexpected!
My favourite virtue name for a girl is Solace. I also like Makepeace, Steadfast and [name]Praise[/name] for a boy. I once knew a family who had a daughter named [name]Patience[/name] [name]Esther[/name] which I think is pretty cool!
Girls:
[name]Honor[/name]/[name]Honora[/name]
[name]Justice[/name] (though I like [name]Justine[/name]/[name]Justina[/name] more)
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Clemence[/name]
[name]Serene[/name]–not a fan of this one,but I do like [name]Serena[/name] a lot
[name]Joya[/name]–went to HS with a girl names this, which I thought was a lovely change from [name]Joy[/name]
Solace is pretty on paper, but it sort of sounds like the word “soulless” aloud. In my opinion at least.
Not in my accent, where it begins “saw”.
I never really thought about this one. I like how it’s soft and dead serious at the same time. It’s the same sort of appeal [name]Constance[/name] has for me - an acquired taste, definitely.
Yes, I loved [name]Serenity[/name] from the first time I learned it could be a name.
I never liked [name]Faith[/name] as a name, both because I take it to be (and it’s usually meant as) religious, and because I don’t value it as a virtue.
[name]Virtue[/name] names definitely aren’t my thing-- [name]Faith[/name] and [name]Patience[/name] are two of my least favorite legitimate names. But I do like:
[name]Grace[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
Cl”mence (one of my favorites)
[name]Honora[/name]
And [name]Prosper[/name] is one of my guilty pleasures for a boy.
I still really like the name [name]Grace[/name], even if it is overused.
I also like [name]Bliss[/name], [name]Joy[/name], & [name]Blythe[/name]…[name]Hope[/name] is nice, too, but I prefer it for a middle name.
I like:
[name]Hope[/name] (unlike [name]Faith[/name] or [name]Grace[/name], I’m not [name]Christian[/name] and those are strongly associated with the belief to me)
[name]Clemency[/name]
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Honor[/name]
Names like [name]Chastity[/name], [name]Comfort[/name], Deliverance, [name]Patience[/name], [name]Prudence[/name], Providence, [name]Serenity[/name], Solitude, etc. (including such gems as Goodwife) are definitely not for me. I think that they kind of put pressure on a child, and it’s really interesting (to an annoying point) that those are given to girls but names such as [name]Bravery[/name], [name]Valiant[/name], Courage, [name]Justice[/name], [name]Legend[/name], [name]Prosper[/name], Merit, or [name]Worth[/name] were, and still are, traditionally given to boys… go figure.
I’m not entirely against virtue names, some I even like, but I wouldn’t use them for my child.
