iâm sure many of yâall who have seen me around the forums know i love a good virtue name, especially those that are a little more out there! since fall, which for no explainable reason gives me strong virtue name vibes, is fast approaching, i was curious as to everyoneâs thoughtsâŠ
would you personally use virtue names? why or why not?
what are your favorite virtue names, meanings taken into consideration?
which other virtue names do you like, but only as gpâs?
so excited to see everyoneâs replies, iâll post my own later today!!
I like certain virtue names because of personal associations and because they fit my style. I would definitely consider using those but probably not many others.
Felicity, Blythe, Verity, and Serenity are my favorites. They sound so pretty and the positive meanings are definitely a plus.
I donât believe I have any. Canât wait to see everyoneâs answers!
Yes I would use a virtue name - with my favourites that I would use being [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and [name_u]Valor[/name_u].
Others I like that would be a middle at best and probably always on the list (only): [name_u]Bravery[/name_u], [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], [name_u]Honor[/name_u], [name_u]Irie[/name_u], [name_u]Liberty[/name_u], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_f]Remember[/name_f], and [name_f]Winsome[/name_f].
Iâm a tiny bit iffy about actually using virtue names because I feel like theyâre a bit of a weight to put on a child and quite a few of them have religious connotations that the child may not be comfortable with as they grow up; that said they are stunning names and I know a lot of people (I went to a religious school) who wear them beautifully!
I adore the name [name_f]Grace[/name_f], partly for the connection to the beautiful [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] & partly for potential nn [name_f]Gracie[/name_f]! I also love [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f] & [name_f]Serena[/name_f], although I would only use the first two in the middle spot.
I adore the names [name_f]Charity[/name_f] & [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] - such a sweet victorian vibe - but for me they fall into the guilty pleasure category!
Yes, I would! I really love the idea of instilling those virtues in children by their names. It would serve as an ever-present ideal to strive towards.

While I think virtue names like Hope and Grace are very sweet and perfectly usable, I personally prefer virtue names that are not so commonly used as words.
Verity is my top favorite, and one I could definitely see myself using. I love the meaning âtruthâ.
Felicity is my other favorite. It has such a cheerful sound that perfectly matches its meaning!
I like virtue names in general, and there are a select few that I love.
Sometimes, people are turned off of virtue names, I find, because they think a child would have a lot to live up to with a virtue name, or that a child wouldnât always be happy, so itâs odd to name them âJoy.â Butâthereâs a certain way of thinking about virtue names I learnt via dear [name_u]Theo[/name_u] @seawillow that I think is really great: a virtue name can a reminder to someone who wears it if an inherent truth. A person called âJoyâ will not always be happy, but their name can be a reminder that joy will come again, that happiness is inside of them. I think itâs really cool.
would you personally use virtue names? why or why not?
I would use a virtue name if I liked it well enough! The reasons for why are all above.
what are your favorite virtue names, meanings taken into consideration?
I really love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_u]Merry[/name_u], and I could see myself using those easily. Some are stretchier or more overtly old-fashioned or hymnal: I love [name_u]Vision[/name_u], Pleasance, Benevolence, [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_u]Concord[/name_u], [name_m]Plenty[/name_m], [name_u]Peace[/name_u], [name_u]Bravery[/name_u], Grateful, [name_f]Eloquence[/name_f], [name_f]Patience[/name_f], [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_f]Thankful[/name_f], and⊠do [name_f]Darling[/name_f] or [name_f]Beloved[/name_f] count? Some of these are GP, but I think they are so awesome, meaning and sound and all! Some Iâd use for a child in a heartbeat.
which other virtue names do you like, but only as gpâs?
[name_f]Modesty[/name_f]. I love the sound, and I love the plainness and harshness of its imagery all at onceâbut itâs strictly GP.
I also probably wouldnât use [name_f]Temperance[/name_f] (does that count as a virtue?), if weâre taking meaning into account. The historical significance is strong. I wouldnât want to be called [name_f]Temperance[/name_f] whilst sitting in seventh grade history class.
Yes, but only really the ones that (to me) read more like a name than a word. I think names that remind people of the virtue too much could be unfortunate if the child doesnât live up to the expectations. âŠOr if they live up to them too well and it becomes comical.
Fred (peace)
Lykke (joy)
Love (technically a diminutive of Ludvig but the meaning love is nice too)
Signe (blessed)
Christian
Or if I went international:
Amity
Hope
Will
Ace
Blythe (I didnât even know this was a virtue name until now. I just liked Gilbert Blythe.)
I donât really belive in guilty pleasures but there are some names I would like to name a character, but I wouldnât personally give a real child that name.
Grace
Faith
Happy
Merry
Ever
Truly
Helga (to make holy)
would you personally use virtue names? why or why not?
I would. [name_f]Virtue[/name_f] names express values that are important to me. That doesnât mean that you necessarily expect your child to live up to it, but they reflect hope and maybe something to aspire to. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband on the other hand isnât too keen on virtue names, so havenât actually had the chance to use any.
what are your favorite virtue names, meanings taken into consideration?
If I liked the sound and the meaning, yes, Iâd consider one. When it comes to meaning, I wouldnât (personally) want it to be overtly religious, but also not too heavy?
I have a tendency to use honor names, and my genealogy is brimming with virtue names. I always wanted to use double middles, and my top boyâs name for years was George Thomas Wrestling, Wrestling being my favorite virtue name from my ancestors. Wrestling itself is an honor name for Jacob/Israel, which doubles its value for me. (My ancestors were Mayflower Pilgrims on one side of the family; I am Jewish, so Wrestling=Yaâakov.)
Yes, if I liked one. I used to fall into the mindset of virtue names being hard pressure to live up to, or else kind of disturbing (for example, a girl named [name_f]Obedience[/name_f] or Modesty). However, Iâve started to drift into the opinion that many virtue names are beautiful and hold a truth, a wish for a principle to guide a child into adulthood and last far beyond the days of a parent physically being around to guide their child themselves. (@seawillow, I can largely credit you to helping me reach this point lol).
AlsoâŠmy own name means noble and I donât feel any sort of pressure to be that way. Okay, yes, there is a difference between a name meaning youâd have to look up to know and a name that is straight up like [name_f]Patience[/name_f] but still.
Some of my favorites:
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
[name_u]Royal[/name_u]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
Deliverance
Remembrance
Able/Abel
[name_f]Patience[/name_f]
[name_u]Noble[/name_u]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f]
[name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
[name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_m]Worth[/name_m]
[name_u]Wisdom[/name_u]
[name_u]Win[/name_u]
[name_u]Welcome[/name_u]
Resolve
[name_u]Comfort[/name_u]
thank you everyone for your replies so far!! itâs been so much fun reading through everyoneâs favorites
my answers
i would definitely use virtue names! i love the sounds of so many and the ideas of emphasizing certain values through names. i also see them as an indirect way of honoring people close to me â allegiance as an honor for my grandfather who served in the coast guard his entire career, amity for my grandma who is the most lovely person i know, etc.
some of my very favorites:
allegiance
remembrance
amity
foster
patience
liberty
able
clemency
fortitude
prosper
temperance
I would personally use them (my top girlâs middle is a virtue name) but I donât know that I would do it for more than 2 in a sibset just because I think thereâs more wild and wonderful names out there!
I like [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Reverie[/name_f], [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], and [name_f]Winsome[/name_f] for girl names
For boys I like [name_u]Brave[/name_u], [name_u]Noble[/name_u], [name_m]Justus[/name_m], [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], and [name_u]Valor[/name_u].
I donât know what GP means so I wonât answer lol.
would you personally use virtue names? why or why not? i would if a partner wanted to, and for a story i would if i think the parents of the character would. for irl i would avoid f@ith and j0y because those are my cousinsâ names, and m3rcy is my friendâs middle name.
what are your favorite virtue names, meanings taking into consideration? to be honest, i donât really think about virtue names too often, but i could see myself using felicity and grace (or gracie), or some wild outlandish gp that i canât think of off the top to my head.
which other virtue names do you like, but only as gpâs? same as above, i never really think about virtue names so i donât have any off the top of my head.
